I was asked to contribute to a LinkdIn conversation on this topic: You're juggling student requests for feedback and grading efficiency. How can you strike the right balance? As an educator, your dual role in providing feedback and maintaining grading efficiency requires a delicate balance. Implement these strategies to streamline your process: - Schedule dedicated time slots for grading and providing feedback, ensuring neither task overwhelms the other. - Use rubrics that clearly outline criteria, saving time while giving students comprehensive insights. - Embrace technology such as grading software to automate repetitive tasks, freeing up time for personalized feedback. How do you manage the balance between student feedback and grading? Share your strategies. I thought that these are all sound advice and if you're working at a school with no "real" or working LMS, this could be a problem. You will find it almost impossible connect with your students, make time for all of your teaching, testing, grading, mentoring and advisory tasks and not burn out. But if you are working in an institution (a trade or vocational school, research university or an applied sciences university) with at least a reasonably working LMS, then all of these shouldn't be a problem anymore, because all of these issues have been (and are continuously being) addressed, solved and seamlessly integrated into one suite of EdTech tools: FeedbackFruits Answers to the poll were limited to 750 characters, so my contribution was limited and straight to the point, so here's what I would have answered if I were allowed more space: Grading student work—whether individual or group-based—AND providing feedback on assignments, the course itself, or your teaching approach has become increasingly challenging, especially as class sizes continue to grow. Fortunately, @FeedbackFruits offers an innovative solution that empowers educators to create active, engaging, and collaborative learning experiences. With FeedbackFruits, teachers can: - Encourage collaboration between students and boost engagement to their materials, classmates, their teachers and their own learning process. - Facilitate student reflection and encourage constructive, effective feedback. - Design comprehensive, engaging courses, including rubrics and grading frameworks. - Monitor student activity and progress with actionable analytics. - Leverage proven, evidence-based course templates to save time and enhance outcomes. The EdTech you need is already here. Streamline your workload while delivering meaningful, lasting impact to your students with @FeedbackFruits and enrich both teaching and learning. Caveat: I don't work for FeedbackFruits, but hope to do so in the very near future. But I know this is what teachers need to use now. #EdTech #FeedbackFruits #EdTechThatWorks

To keep up with grading assignments from thousands of learners, online course instructors often turn to multiple choice questions or short text responses. New research from MIT Open Learning explores a solution for evaluating open-ended assessments that also improves learners’ performance. Daniel Braconnier and John Liu studied whether online learners who provided more feedback to their peers would perform better overall. By analyzing interactions on CrowdLearn, a peer review tool by FeedbackFruits, they found that learners who made more connections received better grades. Braconnier and Liu presented their findings at the 2024 IEEE Digital Education and Massive Open Online Courses Conference. "Comments & Replies: Discussion Forum Interaction Networks Stimulated by Peer-Review Assignments" was a finalist for best paper. In a recent Q&A, Braconnier explains how peer review enables complex questions and deeper learner engagement in online courses.
