Home to 1.2 billion people and occupying nearly a quarter of the earth’s surface, mountains and their surrounding ecosystems provide a bounty of life-sustaining resources. ⛰️ UNESCO aptly named mountains the “Water Towers of the World” due to their vast reserves of freshwater that supply a range of services such as drinking water and energy production to downstream communities. Over half of humanity relies on these freshwater reserves drawn from mountain ecosystems. 🏞️ In addition, mountains are home to a wide range of flora and fauna, comprising nearly half of the world’s biodiversity, yet they face serious threats from climate change and various harmful human activities. Considered the backbone to life on Earth, and their conservation is critical to our survival. To learn more, read the report, "Caring for Our Mountains," a report that contributes to the wealth of information and conversations around mountains by highlighting programs in CARE Perú, CARE Ecuador, CARE Nepal, and CARE Tanzania that address the social and environmental threats to highland ecosystems, underscoring the disproportionate impacts of these threats on women and other marginalized groups, and drawing from their experiences to outline best practices for integrated, equitable, and community-centered approaches to mountain conservation. Welcoming the first cohort of participants in our new learning journey on Ecosystem-based Adaption (EbA)! 🎉 Yesterday, we had the first live session of a new learning journey on EbA with participants coming from Vietnam and Laos, countries that with their rich biodiversity and reliance on ecosystem services, are highly vulnerable to climate change. With EbA strategies, nations like these can have the potential to enhance their resilience and help protect vital ecosystems, regulate water flows, and safeguard biodiversity whilst contributing to sustainable livelihoods, food security, and poverty reduction, making it a crucial tool for addressing the challenges posed by the climate crisis. As part of CARE's She Grows the Future II Project, this interactive online training aims to equip participants with the knowledge and skills to implement EbA strategies. The 16-week program focuses on the practical application of EbA, integrating gender equality, and addressing climate change challenges at the local level. We will start a second iteration of the training for CARE staff and partners in Ecuador and Peru in January, and hope to have more iterations in the future. Let us know in the comments if you would be interested in online training on EbA! Did you know that according to UN estimates, one-fifth of the world's refugees — some 6.6 million people — reside in camps? ⛺ These vulnerable communities face food insecurity, environmental degradation, and limited opportunities. They often depend on food aid from international organizations that have been unable to meet their food and nutritional needs. At CARE, we're working to change that. The CAMP+ approach, initiated by CARE Danmark, offers holistic solutions combining economic, social, and environmental benefits for both host and displaced communities. Last week, this approach was presented by the CARE Climate Justice Center through our Program Quality Lead, Thuy-Binh Nguyen, at a workshop on the integration of climate and environment in humanitarian response that was organized by the Centre de Crise et de Soutien (CDCS or the Crisis and Support Centre) of the Ministère des Affaires étrangères français (French Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs) and Climate Action Accelerator in Paris.🇫🇷 Imagine an ecosystem that both ensures better opportunities for refugees and is sustainable for the planet. That is the vision behind CAMP+. Read and learn more about this innovative approach at 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gbUKx5By

Last November 21, the CARE Climate & Resilience Academy delivered a session in the Canadian Partnership for Women and Children's Health (CanWaCH) CanWaCH Academy 2024, a knowledge and professional development initiative to support CanWaCH member organizations in advancing health and rights for women, children, and adolescents globally. Through a half-day online session, the CARE Climate & Resilience Academy led a training on community-based resilience and adaptation, focusing on climate change impacts on health from a gender-inclusive perspective. This session aimed to increase participants' understanding of key climate concepts and the nexus between climate change, gender and health, as well as how to identify gender and health-related vulnerabilities through CARE’s Climate Vulnerability and Capacity Analysis (CVCA) and integrate health and gender in community-based adaptation projects. It was a very interactive and engaging session with great mutual learning and participation from our audiences as we unpacked this important nexus. ----- The CARE Climate & Resilience Academy is an initiative of the CARE Climate Justice Center that aims to expand and deepen individual and organizational knowledge and understanding of climate change, its causes, and consequences. We can offer capacity-building support and our resources build on existing knowledge from CARE's over 20 years of experience in resilience, community-based adaptation, climate advocacy, and in our own efforts to become a climate-smart organization. COP29 climate finance agreement FAILS developing countries’ struggle against climate change With the conclusion of #COP29 last week, the agreement on climate finance reached at the annual conference has failed to deliver on an ambitious and fit-for-purpose quantum to support developing countries in their existential fight against the devastating impacts of climate change. #PayUp Parties concluded with an agreement to provide at least $300 billion annually: while the deal triples the expiring $100 billion annual commitment made in 2009, it is a far cry from the $1.3 trillion annually in public funding that developing countries and civil society organisations have demanded. The figure, backed by scientific evidence, is needed to meet the scale of the climate crisis in developing nations, which bear a disproportionate burden from climate change, but also have historically contributed the least to climate change. Parties did NOT build on the COP28’s commitment to phase out fossil fuels: the accord from last year’s talks in Dubai to “transition away from fossil fuels” was not strengthened and COP29’s final deal merely reiterated it.
