I worked in conjunction with Connor guest to configure the Arduino micro controller sketches into one sketch that would output the 3 sensor's information in a readable and analyzable system.
Additionally Connor and I built and tested all the electronics for the system: Soldering, Pressure/Temp/Ozone sensor testing in various conditions, configuring different power sources to find the optimal run-time. We were constrained by the battery's output as well as the conditions (high altitude & temperature) that the balloon would be experiencing.
I created a Matlab scripts to convert the output strings (100,000+ elements) of the sensor data into integers of type double that would be used to produce readable graphs to visualize the atmospheric variables against time as well as altitude.
The team's data ended up matching theoretical assumptions (within 15% error - using my analyzed data) and all the electronics worked as tested even at the extreme conditions.

A second set of rainwater tanks were installed at another house to provide them with additional water. The area (Santa Amaro) is a Favela and this region of Brazil suffers from drought - we identified an issue we thought the community faced verified that it was a pressing need by the community members and spent a year fundraising and designing the tanks and piping for the project. The rainwater catchment tanks (one 10-000L and 3 1000L) now supply additional water to 22 individuals in the community.

  • Latrine Sanitation System

    -

I worked on reviving a latrine sanitation system: The system takes biological waste and through a series of complex processes in a biodigester destroys harmful pathogens in the waste – this partially sterilized waste is then transported to a solar sterilizer where it is superheated and undergoes nitrification – once it’s sterilized it moves to a set of large basins where it’s now oxygenated and eventually flows into a fish pond – the fish are then sold at the market. The other by products of the biodigester (due to anaerobic respiration) are biogas and digestate (low grade organic fertilizer) – the digestate will be used to fertilize the crops within the systems site and the biogas as of now will be unused. The system wasn't built or designed by me but two other duke students (Connor Cotton and Mona Dia) who unfortunately due to extenuating circumstances ran out of time.

The sanitation system has so many possibilities and if completed properly it will pay for itself and after some time even run a profit – in a community where additional funds are difficult to come by the system is practical: the use of latrines allows will assist in the lessening of human waste in the plains, the selling of fresh fish, American corn and potatoes will provide more dietary options for the community, the system will create an additional job, the digestate will fertilize the biogarden without filling the ground with potentially harmful inorganic substances, as more and more research is done on biogas more uses for the fuel will become available and the system will have it on hand. Not an as important outcome but one nonetheless: The system will be the first of its kind in the country and will bring once again prestige and public recognition to Farendè. We (Elie and I) managed to completely revive the system and it is now operational - what it will yield remains to be seen

  • Engineering Innovation Design Challenge

    -

Group challenge that incorporated both mechanical and electrical components. The team was broken up into 3 sub-teams. Each sub-team constructed 2 electric circuits that incorporated pressure sensors to trigger desired amusement park themed outputs. All 3 sub-teams then connected their respective components to make one system. Our team decided to take up an amusement park theme and incorporated each circuit as rides to provide a final viewing as can be seen in the video.
