SIX THINGS YOU SHOULD NEVER DO AS A CONTENT WRITER (Continued) I started with the first three yesterday, and I hope you've not been found guilty. If you have, there's an opportunity to become better. Here are the next three. Dear Content Writer, you should never: 4. Stay silent! You've got to be kidding me. How will you establish yourself as a content writer if you don't let the whole world know?! Tell somebody! Write an epistle! Make some noise and do it over and over again. Grow your craft, then make a loud hullabaloo about it. (I had to do that) You're as relevant as you make yourself. 5. Sleep the idea off... No. No. No. Yes, you can write it down later... But it's better to do it now. It's 2 am. I understand. Your book is on the far end of the table. I get it. But that's why you have a device just lying innocently beside you. Pick it up and write. Yes, you're on the bus. Yes, you're in class. Yes, you're anywhere in the world. It doesn't matter. Write that idea down. You'll need it soon enough. You're welcome. 6. Hate reading! Did you just commit the biggest writing crime in the world?!!! How do you grow if you don't want to learn?! The best writers have to be good readers first. This opens your eyes to how other writers go about their craft. You learn different styles of writing, have your understanding enlightened, your imagination blown away etcetera, etcetera. No, you can't be a good writer, if you aren't a good reader. Task yourself; take up the challenge. Read a book, a poem, an article, a story etc. You'll need the experience. So, if you have been committing these six sacrilegious sins, it's time to repent and be converted into a real content writer. Let me know how your conversion experience goes. I see posts from freelance writers complaining about agencies asking for free test articles all the time. I truly feel for them as there are a lot of shady people in all industries nowadays, but as I also deal with freelance writers virtually every single day, I also have something to say on the matter. We have worked with hundreds of freelance writers over the last few years and as we always strive to offer the highest quality content to our clients, we have to ensure they can meet our high standards before we start working with them. The process continues as our Content Editors meticulously fact-check and proofread every piece of content before it is sent to our clients, but let’s focus on the onboarding process here. We ask all writers who apply to send us samples of their iGaming work and their rates, but we also require 1-2 test articles before we make a final decision. We have no way of knowing whether the samples they initially sent were actually written by them and not someone else or an AI tool, so we have to see how they perform in an actual test. This way we can check the quality of content, the flow, how well they incorporated client guidelines, their responsiveness, and most importantly, how they respond to feedback. If they check all of the above, but start getting defensive when constructive criticism goes their way, we don’t want to work with them. We always make it perfectly clear that this is a paid test and ensure the articles never take more than 1 business day to produce. I understand the writers need to make an effort, spend their time and it is not fair they are not compensated for it. What is more, we pay them even if we cannot use the test article, i.e. it does not meet our standards. Just as clients shouldn’t pay for under-par content, I don’t think we should pay for content that is clearly way below the required quality, but we still pay them as I’d rather lose some money (cost of doing business) than listen to the backlash of disgruntled writers who think everybody is out to get them. I realise that with so many layoffs nowadays, there are thousands of writers looking for work and there are some people and companies looking to take advantage of them. That is why it would be smart to ask around about the company advertising the job/gig you are interested in, and LinkedIn is a pretty good platform to perform a background check and ask any writers who used to work with them for their experiences. But, this doesn’t mean that all agencies are bad and that you should reject any test articles/tasks right off the bat. How else do you think they can be sure you are as good as you claim to be? If I had hired every writer who claimed they were an amazing writer, our agency would have gone bust a long time ago.

SMEs (especially devs) need to do better when collaborating with technical writers. I have seen alot of instances where they ignore a technical writers reach out or just give out vague responses. In some cases they perceive technical writers as not “knowledgeable” enough. Technical writers are as relevant and valuable as any team member JSYK…… I would also encourage technical writers to equally stay ahead of the curve. Things are moving fast, technologies are evolving - of course you’re already familiar with the AI virus (don’t mean this in a bad way :)). Even taking 20mins a day to learn more about your craft is worth it. Learn new tools, processes and best practices. This way, you may not really have to ask the developers alot of questions. I am a self-taught Copywriter. Without a tutor or a link to find one, it took me at least 3 years to wrap my head around it. (Not master it) Even when I thought I understood it, I did not have anyone to read it and offer corrections or suggestions It was frustrating Fortunately, I didn't stop learning about it I keep on watching those (fragmented) YouTube videos with course offers for 1000's of dollars Where can I get that money? I had to stick to reading books about copywriting (I can't have access to hard copies, I only download the available free soft copies) What's so funny about this is, even after grasping the tip of copywriting, I don't even know how to deliver a project to prospects after reaching out to them to offer my (free) services It was like a hamster wheel where I kept circling AI is not even here to help me with directions, suggestions, or strategies. So I finally met someone who has been a content writer and is in different communities where writers hang out and learn. I learned the basics of content writing from the resources he and his team shared with me and I started offering it as a service He also told me to search for communities and copywriting blogs. I did And most of them will just give you templates or sell their course which I do not have a penny for that I had to use the templates (fill in the blank) which makes all my copy sound the same and generic You see there is greatness in continuous learning (I will tell you the story of why I chose copywriting one day) Despite trying and failing and not finding the right spot to stand, I kept pushing until I was able to understand all about copywriting. Copywriting is not about just WRITING like I thought back then. It entails a lot of loopholes and curves that need to be mastered (or at least understood) Learning copywriting myself pushed me to learn so many things most copywriters do not know about. Had it been I bought a course with specific directions or kept using templates, I wouldn't be where I am today. Is learning without a tutor easy? Hell NO!!! Is it worth it? One million times YES. It's long, but worth the journey because one will become a tutor or trainer because of the in-depth knowledge and mistakes acquired during the learning journey What's that one skill you learned without a tutor and few resources to guide you and for how long have you been going after it?

I am a Marketing writer. If 'Last chance to grab' is the subject of an email in my inbox, I delete it unread. I will not go for something simply because it's the last chance to get at it. If I have looked at their previous emails, surely my decision was already made. This 'last chance/few hours' is rushing my purchase, and really is not. Good job on making your funnel (irritating). Try relating and leave out the hard sell. Let’s clear something up!!! A content writer is not the same as a graphic designer. These are entirely different skill sets. Even within content writing, there are specific niches like copywriting, UX writing, SEO writing, blogging, and more. However, I've noticed that many companies are conflating these roles, expecting content writers to also have expertise in tools like Adobe Photoshop, Canva, and graphic design. While it’s true that these can be valuable additional skills, they shouldn’t be considered mandatory. Recently, I came across a café in Guwahati that wanted a content writer to handle Canva graphics, digital marketing, and even sales, all for just 15k per month! I had to explain to them that each of these tasks requires specialized skills, and if they want quality work, they need to either hire separate professionals or consider freelancers who specialize in these areas. #writerslife #contentwriter #copywriter #marketingagencies #graphicdesigner #joblife

Last week, while we were having our ‘progress report’ meeting, I had a presentation on the content strategy document (for our project) that I'm working on. So, I started from the top and explained the concept of a BRAND VOICE and how we're going to build ours and have a consistent brand voice. After the meeting was over, she said that she had never heard of brand voice before in her years as a techie. She also added that she learned something new and was excited about it. 😊😊 And so, I thought to share with you too the things I shared with her on brand voice during the meeting. =============================================== A brand voice is the distinct personality and style in which you (as a brand) use in communicating with your audience across platforms. Think of it this way: you know how your voice, when unfiltered, is the same over the phone, in person, on radio etc? Yes, that. True that the platform may require a slight alteration to your voice but it remains the same through and through. Your brand voice encompasses the tone, language, and overall communication style that you use to convey your messages and connect with your audience. Having a well-defined brand voice helps establish a strong identity, build trust, and foster a deeper connection with your customers. Special thanks to HerTechTrail for bringing out the technical writer in me. They made me believe that as a writer you have no limitation.
