Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a silent global crisis threatening human and animal health, food security, and economic stability. Each year, it claims 700,000 lives, projected to reach 10 million annually by 2050 without urgent action. But the fight against AMR cannot be won without engaging the people at the heart of the issue, local communities. From traditional medicine practices to antibiotic use in agriculture, local communities play a critical role in shaping antimicrobial use patterns. Yet, they’re often excluded from formal strategies to address AMR, a gap that undermines global efforts. Read more in this OHI article by Anthony Nkhunguni to discover how local communities influence the spread of AMR, the risks of sidelining them in AMR strategies, and practical solutions. As a selected participant of the 2024 AMR Risk Communication Training, I was honored to design and implement a comprehensive campaign during the World Antimicrobial Resistance Week 2024. My campaign strategy targeted six diverse locations, including secondary schools, pharmacies, veterinary clinics, radio stations, primary healthcare centers, and local communities, with the goal of promoting awareness and education on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR). On Day 1 of my campaign, I kicked off my activities by visiting Malete Secondary School and Kwasu Radio, where I engaged with students, educators, and community members to raise awareness about the risks and consequences of AMR. Following a general discussion at Malete Secondary School, JSS 3 students were divided into two gender groups for a focused group discussion, where they received targeted health education. The female students were educated on menstrual hygiene and its significance in tackling Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), while the male students were sensitized on proper sneezing etiquette and disease prevention strategies to combat AMR. To reinforce the knowledge gained, female students were provided with menstrual pads, and male students received nose masks as a practical intervention. This campaign not only educated the students but also empowered them to become AMR stewards, equipped with the knowledge to promote good hygiene practices and prevent the spread of AMR. Subsequently, I visited a radio station, where I participated in a live broadcast to raise awareness about AMR among community members. During the broadcast, listeners were informed about the risks and preventive measures associated with AMR, and a key message was emphasized: "It's not always malaria, consult a medical doctor before using medication." Listeners were also encouraged to utilize community primary healthcare centers for affordable medical care. The Day 1 campaign was a resounding success, with thousands of people sensitized on AMR through the radio program and 100 Malete Secondary School students empowered to become AMR stewards. Stay tuned for updates on my Day 2 and 3 campaigns, targeting additional locations. I extend special gratitude to the Stop Superbugs Squad One Health and Development Initiative team for sponsoring this campaign. and to my fellow champion who we both implement Day 1 campaign. I thought my awareness campaign was over but earlier this morning, my team and I got an invitation from Saint Jerome Veterinary Clinic to perform an awareness campaign at Primary Healthcare, Kwangila, Sabon gari, where we trained nurses and interns on AMR. We educated the nurses and interns on AMR, its global impact, factors, causes and prevention, we also distributed educational materials, stickers and a poster. We trained the nurses and interns on how to calculate accurate dose to be given to a patient using dsage, body weight and drug concentration so as not to overdose or underdose their patients. The nurses and intern were ready to learn and very cooperative. They were also committed to contribute in the global fight against AMR. Thank you very much Dr. Jerome Okpanachi for inviting us over. Your support and guidance have been instrumental in raising awareness against AMR. Let's keep raising awareness against AMR 💪 Thanks to our sponsors Stop Superbugs Squad and One Health and Development Initiative South Centre, Geneva Microbiology Society The Trinity Challenge #stopsuperbugssquad #onehealthanddevelopmentinitiative #Youths4AMRComms #WAAW2024 #AMRClubABUZaria

This system also enhances bone health, minimizing fractures common in caged environments. As sentient beings, hens deserve environments that minimize suffering. Research shows that moving hens to cage-free systems significantly reduces the time they spend in pain. See more in the visual below! #onehealth #animalwelfare #henwelfare
