BEAM Alliance represents the largest European organisation regrouping SMEs that develop solutions against #antimicrobialresistance. For the second year, we took the pulse of our members to capture the mood and facts of entrepreneurship in the #AMR field. Not surprisingly, the state of mind remains positive, and our members overall optimistic. But the reality is not that rosy: 🔹Access to funding from both public and private sources remains highly complicated and even deteriorates. 🔹The majority (60%) of the companies are very fragile, with a runway lower than 1 year, and the average runway length even decreased by 2 months since last year. This observation only strengthens our determination to continue our efforts to make the voice of SMEs heard by political decision-makers and to speed up the introduction of solutions that will enable innovators to do their work in more serene conditions. #PULLincentives #GeneralPharmaceuticalLegislation

📢 Promising progress from the EU on #antibiotic innovation and accessibility! The EU has launched its first-ever revenue guarantee program to support the development and distribution of new antibiotics, with a focus on smaller member states. Through this €40 million pilot initiative, the Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Authority (HERA) has partnered with the Italian company MENARINI Group. MENARINI will ensure the availability of Vabomere (a meropenem-vaborbactam combination licensed from Melinta Therapeutics) across 21 participating countries. How will this work? If MENARINI’s sales fall below a set threshold, HERA will guarantee revenue to bridge the gap. This pilot program is set to run for 49 months, marking a significant step toward addressing market barriers for critical antibiotics. While €40 million over four years amounts to just €0.5 million per year per country—a modest start—the innovative funding mechanism is what truly matters. Let’s hope the EU scales this initiative quickly to drive real impact. With antibiotic resistance an ongoing health threat, our #GSKAustralia team travelled to Parliament House in Canberra to advocate and discuss the need for new antibiotics in Australia. We partnered with the Australian Antimicrobial Resistance Network (AAMRNet) and Pfizer in an all-day workshop, exploring how we may implement a subscription fund for new antibiotics, mirroring the success of a UK model. While in Canberra, the team spoke with key parliamentarians about the importance of a subscription fund for new antibiotics. We also heard from Gavin Pearce MP, Shadow Assistant Minister for Health, Aged Care and Indigenous Health Services, who reiterated that “the time to act is now”. Addressing the looming AMR crisis is a key priority for our team, as we continue our mission to get ahead of disease together.

As 𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘭𝘥 𝘈𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘪𝘤𝘳𝘰𝘣𝘪𝘢𝘭 𝘙𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘈𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘞𝘦𝘦𝘬 (𝘞𝘈𝘈𝘞) kicked off around the globe, the Australian Antimicrobial Resistance Network (AAMRNet) was meeting in Canberra to explore how Australia can better support the development of and access to new antimicrobial technologies. Key clinicians, researchers, industry and government representatives gathered to discuss how a subscription-style funding model for new antimicrobials might be adapted to be fit-for-purpose in Australia. It’s an idea turned into reality by the UK’s National Health Service (the NHS) after it successfully piloted a world-first subscription reimbursement model, with the goal to improve access to much needed antibiotics, and at the same time incentivize the pharmaceutical industry to develop new antibiotics to tackle superbugs. David Glover, Assistant Director of Medicines Analysis at NHS England joined the workshop to explain the UK model in detail. Afterwards he had a chat with Caroline Duell for the MTPConnect Podcast about the impetus for this pioneering approach, why paying manufacturers a fixed fee for antimicrobials can boost drug development and why this UK model, which is now being expanded, benefits governments, companies and patients.  Did you know that out of more than 20 of the newest antimicrobials available for use in the EU and / or the US since 2011, only 3 are listed on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods? And none are reimbursed on the PBS.   Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is considered one of the most urgent global health priorities by the World Health Organization. The impact of AMR on the Australian economy is estimated to reach $142-283 billion by 2050.   The development of, and access to, innovative new treatments for AMR will be critical to protect communities and save lives.   The recent HTA Review identified the need for new incentives to encourage research and development in priority pathogens, including novel antimicrobials.
