I am happy to report that we broke the over 20 years jinx on the NES land development in Abuja. It is time for the Society to assume its rightful status as one of the oldest professional societies in Nigeria. When I assumed office as the President of the NES in October 2023, one of my promises to members was to break the jinx over the development of the NES land in Abuja, and to move the Society from living in containers to a proper and befitting national secretariat. The journey since then has been quite tough. We advertised for developers and after due process we signed an agreement with ASMABEL Ltd, one of the leading indigenous property developers in Abuja. We had to settle the debts on the land in order to remove the lien that was placed on its development, instead of going to the court. Last week, the Development Control office in Abuja finally approved the final drawing of the secretariat put together by NES and ASMABEL. On Tuesday, November 27th, the ground breaking was done. Full construction activities are starting in earnest. I must thank members of the Governing Council for their support throughout the process, members of the College of Fellows and Past Presidents who supported my initiative of adopting a PPP option to develop the land, and members of the NES AGM for believing in me. Special thanks to the NES Business Manager, Dr Idris M. Idris for his persistence and hardwork, as well as the Chairman of ASMABEL Ltd for willing to partner with the Society. I am excited that we have broken the 20years plus jinx and also going to set the NES on a path to financial security when the building is completed. Glory to God in the highest. #nes #nationalsecretariat #asmabel #economists.

  • The President and Chairman of the Governing Council of the Nigerian Economic Society (NES) Adeola Adenikinju delivered a thought-provoking keynote address at an event organised by Policy Innovation Center on Women in Economics Leadership: Barriers and Challenges. The President explored Nigeria's misery index under key economic leadership positions, such as the Finance Minister and SSA to the President on Economic Matters. The analysis revealed that during periods when women held these roles, the misery index was notably lower—a testament to their outstanding leadership and impact. He delved into the systemic obstacles that hinder women's participation in economics leadership, shedding light on the structural and societal challenges they face. The President outlined actionable policies to foster an environment that supports and encourages women in economics leadership, emphasizing the importance of mentorship, inclusivity, and equitable opportunities. The NES Female Professionals arm, inaugurated in August 2024, was presented as a shining example of how women can lead effectively and make significant contributions to the field of economics. This keynote reinforced the critical need to empower women in economics, not only to address existing barriers but to unlock the immense potential they bring to leadership. #WomenInEconomics

I had the privilege of inducting the graduating students of Economics at Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti and inaugurating the Executive Council of the Ekiti State Chapter of the Nigerian Economic Society on October 14, 2024. It was a memorable occasion, leading 41 graduates to become Associate Members of NES and swearing in the 11-member Exco. The event was a colorful affair, reconnecting with old acquaintances and students. I was warmly welcomed by the Vice Chancellor, Prof Elisabeta Olarinde, and the university management, including former students who are now lecturers at the Economics Department. The induction lecture was delivered by Prof Samuel Igbatayo. I extend my gratitude to the state chairpersons of Ondo, Oyo, and Osun NES Chapters for their presence in Ado-Ekiti. Special thanks to the Ekiti State NES Chapter Exco members for the warm reception and to my former students, Dr A.K. John and Dr Dapo Babalola, for their hospitality. The Nigerian Economic Society is progressing, and I am thrilled about the new generation of economists joining the Society. They are the future. #NigerianEconomicSociety #ABUAD #NkiruBalonwu #CBN #economists
