#Indian #Geothermal landscape Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Ltd started its first geothermal drilling campaign in Puga Valley probably 2-3 years back with lot of hullabaloo and then we witnessed radio silence till recently. Actually, their first drilling campaign was unsuccessful. Again, they have reinitiated the drilling operation. Hopefully, this time they will be successful. Ever wondered what were the decision points based on which ONGC decided to drill at that location?? Same point came up during our discussion and then we thought of Why don't we do a comparative reservoir and technoeconomic analysis (along with operations aspect) based on the available data in the Public domain for at least two prominent sites in India. What could be better than SONATA and Himalayan? The very discussion resulted into the peer-reviewed paper recently accepted in the Renewable Energy Journal. The title is "Underpinnings of Reservoir and Techno-economic analysis for Himalayan and Son-Narmada-Tapti Geothermal Sites of India". Here, we hypothesized that SONATA has better prospect than Himalayan geothermal site considering the technical and non-technical aspects. Have you heard of Superhot rock potential studies for India? Here is one techno-economic analysis recently published by our Subsurface Energy and Storage Systems team in Geothermics: https://lnkd.in/dS3rHG9D I generally do not indulge in such discussions but here are my two cents on the state of Geothermal Energy landscape in India: India is well poised with several natural geothermal potential sites along with various abandoned oil and gas well sites (can be repurposed for geothermal resources). The geothermal space in India has been ignored for long and seems like it is not on anyone's priority list. The studies (available in public domain) which has been undertaken till now, are mainly focused on theoretical understanding of the sites. This is great, but it needs to move to the next stage. Our study is looking at the techno-economic aspects of one such site with limited data. If you look at the global energy landscape, the geothermal arena is moving very fast attracting huge investments either from the government or industry. Sadly, it is not the case in India. From the time I have shifted to India, our team have approached many players like Oil India Limited, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Ltd, none of them give heed or support to our work. As per my information, these companies are approaching International players to conduct their feasibility studies. However, they should at least engage capable academic institutions like Department of Petroleum Engineering, IIT(ISM) Dhanbad to conduct such studies. It will not only help them with their project (not to mention the cost reduction), but it will also help in building the workforce which can be asset for only such companies in future. There is so much hoopla on Make in India, but when it comes to implementation on ground, it seems to be misguided. Such state of disoriented approach keep demotivating us, but our Subsurface Energy and Storage Systems team is determined to keep moving and make incremental progresses. 🌏 Why Are There Mainly Tertiary Oil Discoveries in India? 🛢️ India's oil discoveries predominantly belong to the Tertiary period, spanning from approximately 66 million to 2.6 million years ago. This geological era has been highly conducive to hydrocarbon formation and accumulation due to various factors. Here’s an exploration of why Tertiary oil discoveries are prominent in India and a list of major oil discoveries with their geological ages. Why Tertiary Oil Discoveries Predominate in India: Geological Evolution: During the Tertiary period, India experienced significant tectonic activity, leading to the formation of sedimentary basins ideal for hydrocarbon generation. The collision between the Indian plate and the Eurasian plate created extensive sedimentary deposits, providing rich organic matter that eventually transformed into hydrocarbons. Sedimentary Basins: India's Tertiary basins, such as the Cambay Basin, Assam-Arakan Basin, and Krishna-Godavari Basin, have thick sedimentary sequences from this period. These basins have undergone subsidence, allowing for the preservation of organic-rich sediments crucial for oil formation. Thermal Maturity: The Tertiary period provided the right temperature and pressure conditions for organic material to mature into hydrocarbons. The combination of sediment thickness and geothermal gradient during this era was optimal for oil generation. Major Oil Discoveries in India and Their Geological Ages: Bombay High (Mumbai High) Field: Geological Age: Oligocene to Miocene (23 to 5 million years ago) Details: Discovered in 1974, this offshore field in the Mumbai Offshore Basin is one of India’s largest oil fields. Cambay Basin: Geological Age: Eocene to Oligocene (56 to 23 million years ago) Details: Includes significant fields like Ankleshwar, discovered in 1960, and Mehsana, discovered in 1965. Assam-Arakan Basin: Geological Age: Eocene to Miocene (56 to 5 million years ago) Details: Home to fields like Digboi (discovered in the late 19th century) and Duliajan (discovered in the 1950s). Krishna-Godavari Basin: Geological Age: Miocene to Pliocene (23 to 2.6 million years ago) Details: Notable for the D6 block, discovered by Reliance Industries in 2002, marking a major deep-water discovery. Rajasthan Basin: Geological Age: Paleocene to Eocene (66 to 34 million years ago) Details: The Mangala field, discovered in 2004 by Cairn India, is one of the largest onshore oil discoveries in India. One of my papers will be presented in this workshop. The paper is related to the work done by me and my team on history matching a mature field with ~ 100 strings using Assisted History Matching (AHM) approach. Though AHM approach seems to be "easy", the maturity of the field, uncertainties in data, modelling uncertainties makes it difficult to implement it meaningfully. Do attend this workshop, if possible ..... It should interesting! PS: This paper will be presented in Session 1 or 2 on the second day.

EU's RAWMINA project showcases innovative solutions as it faces challenges in sourcing minerals crucial for a sustainable future, despite recovery efforts. The quest for self-sufficiency in critical raw materials (CRMs) is proving to be a steep climb for the European Union. CRMs are pivotal for the bloc's clean energy transition and technological advancements. The EU's ambition is to cut down reliance on imports and pivot towards a greener, circular economy. Addressing this challenge head-on, the RAWMINA project was launched in 2021 with a budget of €9m (US$01m), funded by Horizon Europe. This initiative unites 19 specialist partners from across the EU, UK and South America, aiming to pioneer sustainable methods for CRM extraction from mining waste. According to Diego Morillo Martín, Project Coordinator from LEITAT, RAWMINA is making significant strides: "RAWMINA has successfully demonstrated the feasibility of a continuous and industrially scalable system that combines multiple innovative technologies for efficient and sustainable metal recovery from mine waste. “This sets a new standard for the mining industry and underscores the potential for circular economy practices." The Malaysian Oil, Gas & Energy Services Council (MOGSC) was asked to give comments on the industry. I spoke about the importance of collaboration, the role of VDP in building the local ecosystem, and MOGSC’s approach to increase awareness in ESG among the OGSE players. In closing, I said that the journey towards a sustainable and robust energy ecosystem is a challenging one and can only be achieved via close collaboration and engagement with all stakeholders. Shell Singapore moves to help fuel profitable energy transition. SINGAPORE - Shell Singapore has sold a 60-year-old crude oil refinery and bought one of the Republic’s top traders of lower-emissions liquefied natural gas (LNG) in the space of two months. The almost back-to-back transactions now stand as the best example of how the company envisions execution of its energy transition strategy that aims to cut its carbon footprint and increase focus on its most profitable businesses. “Energy transition is real, and we are committed to it. But it must also be profitable. Because if a business is not profitable, it will disappear anyway,” Ms Aw Kah Peng, chairwoman of Shell Companies in Singapore, told The Straits Times in an interview. In May 2024, Shell agreed to sell its energy and chemicals park on Singapore’s Pulau Bukom and Jurong Island to CAPGC, a joint venture between Indonesia’s Chandra Asri Capital and global commodities trader Glencore. The sale included Singapore’s first oil refinery, built in 1961. Seen as iconic for its historical significance, the refinery on Pulau Bukom and its adjoining petrochemical complex on Jurong Island have not exactly been moneymakers in recent years. The 237,000 barrels-per-day refinery and a one million tonnes-per-year ethylene plant on Bukom, and a chemicals manufacturing site on Jurong Island had formed the bulk of the impairment charges of up to US$4.5 billion (S$6 billion) announced by Shell earlier in 2024. That showed why the London-listed company had placed the Singapore assets under a strategic review about a year earlier. Shell, however, has been improving its financial performance in trading LNG – dubbed as the perfect low-carbon fuel that provides the flexibility that the power generation industry needs to replace coal, and the time that renewable generation needs to grow at scale and displace fossil fuels altogether. Hence, it was no surprise when Shell announced in June that it had agreed with Carne Investments, an indirect wholly owned subsidiary of Singapore’s Temasek, to acquire 100 per cent shares in Pavilion Energy, which trades and ships LNG in Asia and Europe, with a portfolio of about 6.5 million tonnes per year of long-term contracts. Energy consultant Wood Mackenzie said the Pavilion deal and the divestment from the Singapore oil assets align with Shell’s broader business strategy to lead the transition to lower-carbon energy solutions, including its positioning of LNG as a key transition fuel in the global energy transition. “Acquiring Pavilion’s LNG assets will solidify Shell’s leadership in the global LNG market,” said Mr Fadhlullah Omarali, Wood Mackenzie principal analyst for gas and LNG markets, in a research note. https://lnkd.in/g8mGJMrx
