Unlocking DEI Insights: Time to Act on Inclusion. Asia One recently published an article on a survey by foundit, highlighting trends and opportunities for diversity and inclusion (DEI) in Singapore. The survey reveals a commitment to diversity in principle, but also underscores the need for better implementation of DEI initiatives to align organizational intentions with actions. Key Highlights: Commitment to Diversity: 36% of employees believe their workplace is highly or extremely committed to diversity hiring. 52% feel their organization is responsive or highly responsive to feedback on diversity issues. Training Programs: 48% of respondents claim their organizations do not have diversity training programs in place. Sekhar Garisa, CEO of foundit, recommends training to raise awareness. While awareness is the first step, our research and work in building inclusive workplaces show that behaviour’s matter more than awareness and can be measured. Insights from the World Economic Forum found that companies globally spent an estimated $7.5 billion on DEI-related efforts in 2020. This figure is projected to more than double to $15.4 billion by 2026. Despite this investment, progress remains slow. It’s clear that behaviours are the key to making a real, measureable impact. The commitment is there; now it’s time to act on it. 𝐅𝐍𝐒 𝐂𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬 𝟐𝟎 𝐘𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬: 𝐌𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐬, 𝐌𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐌𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐲 On 16 Nov, Facilitators Network Singapore (Official) marked their 20th anniversary year long celebration with a memorable dinner. As my contribution to this special occasion, I had earlier envisioned capturing FNS’ 20 years of milestones in a visually compelling way. What started as an ambitious idea quickly became a monumental challenge when Janice Lua, CMF, CPF-Emeritus and Prabu Naidu shared their list of milestones — it was… looooooong. What was I thinking?!!  20 𝘺𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘴!  Of course, the list of milestones would be long! That’s when I realised the true scale of what I’d set out to do. In a moment of uncertainty, I turned to my mentor, Tim Hamons, who graciously offered his guidance. Initially, the plan was straightforward: scribe everything on paper. But as they say, 𝘔𝘶𝘳𝘱𝘩𝘺’𝘴 𝘓𝘢𝘸 𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘬𝘦𝘴 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘵 𝘦𝘹𝘱𝘦𝘤𝘵 𝘪𝘵! Unexpected challenges forced me to pivot to a digital approach. My first attempt? 𝐀 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐭𝐞 𝐦𝐞𝐬𝐬! Tim’s feedback during a Zoom call was transformative. He suggested clustering the milestones instead of arranging them linearly, which brought much-needed clarity to the design. But the challenges didn’t stop there. The digital platform I was using couldn’t handle the resolution needed for large-scale printing. Determined not to give up, I took a leap—I enrolled in a Procreate course to learn an entirely new software from scratch, all to keep my vision alive. When I finally saw the finished piece printed on the 1.2mx2.4m canvas, it felt surreal. A task that had once seemed overwhelming transformed into a deeply fulfilling accomplishment, reflecting the effort and growth it took to bring it to life. 𝐌𝐲 𝐤𝐞𝐲 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬: 𝐒𝐞𝐞𝐤 𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩: Tim’s guidance turned obstacles into stepping stones. 𝐀𝐝𝐚𝐩𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧: Embracing digital tools and learning Procreate proved that growth often comes from stepping out of your comfort zone. 𝐓𝐫𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬: Challenges that once seemed insurmountable became moments of pride and achievement. A heartfelt thank you to Tim Hamons for his mentorship and to Janice Lua, CMF, CPF-Emeritus and Prabu Naidu for the opportunity to bring this vision to life. Even though I’m aspiring to serve as an independent director, wanting to bring diversity to RC and AC given my background in GRC (Governance, Risk and Compliance), I agree that mandating a genda quota might bring about unintended outcome as shared by Boon Gin Tan and might not be the most sustainable model for Singapore. Whilst such a policy would be very supportive for aspiring female first-time directors like myself, I want to be selected on the basis that I’m the best candidate to bring valued perspectives to the boardroom, not merely due to the mandated quota. What is the estimated percentage of learning from training translated into ACTION at the workplace? I asked this question to my audience at the Malaysian Association of Professional Conference last week. Answer? Based on well-supported research, the audience agreed that less than 20% of learning translates into ACTION. This reality resonated well with the words of wisdom of my favourite ancient thought leader, Thiruvalluvar, who said, "Karka Kasadara Karpavai Katrapin, Nitka Atharke Thaga," which means 'learn thoroughly what ought to be learned and let our action demonstrate the lessons learned'. The problem statement is obvious. There is tremendous waste in the training investments of individuals, organizations, and nations. I am sure no leaders who approve and are accountable for L&D investments intend to waste it. Thus, the significance of paying attention to this problem is also evident and urgent. What is the solution? Researchers consistently agree that the missing link is translating learning into ACTION. In the New World Kirkpatrick Model, this is the Level 3 Evaluation, Behaviour. As a Certified Practitioner of the New World Kirkpatrick Model, I appreciate the significance of this fantastic model. I am glad my friends SHANTI SUBRAMANIAM, Kuti Biazid, and Vaneesa were kind enough to come to the stage and demonstrate the missing link. People often find a connection between Level 1 (Reaction) and Level 2 (Learning), but there is frequently a large gap between Level 2 and Level 3 (Behaviour). The audience could see the missing link. How do we facilitate behaviour change? I suggested that leaders pay attention to the required drivers, i.e., the processes and systems that facilitate a behaviour change. We categorize the required drivers as monitor, encourage, reinforce, and reward. I shared my experiences in applying various tools and techniques to monitor, encourage, reinforce, and reward changes in behaviour. My recent certification as a Certified Learning Transfer Designer helped me share brilliant ideas from Dr. Ina Weinbauer-Heidel's book, 'What Makes Training Really Work'. It was an honour to listen to the keynote address by the legendary Tan Sri Dr Mani Jegathesan. Tan Sri is among the global icons who translated learning into action as an Olympian. Sharing the stage with my fellow professional speakers was a privilege. A few weeks ago, we had the chance to facilitate the "Leading Change and Empowering Transformation" workshop for Amartha as part of their Leadership Empowerment and Development (LEAD) Program. Using the fun and interactive LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® methodology, we guided participants in building models and sharing their stories. This hands-on experience allowed them to explore how their individual strengths and teamwork can align with Amartha’s vision, all while enjoying the process. The workshop gave participants the opportunity to express their roles as leaders, problem solvers, and motivators in a playful and engaging way. By working together, they discovered new ways to communicate, solve challenges, and support one another. The activities encouraged them to think creatively and develop solutions, showing how much can be learned while having fun with LEGO® bricks. We believe that play is not childish but a powerful tool for unlocking creativity, encouraging open dialogue, and developing practical strategies. Naturally, the more aligned we are with what we enjoy or prefer doing, the more #engaged we are likely to feel. Here's a story I'd like to share: Some years ago, I was invited to speak to a group of 3rd year medical students on 'Breaking the Bad News' - this was about understanding people and emotion as part of the therapeutic process. I extended a #workstyles assessment to the students as a means of helping them understand their own relationship with emotion i.e. why some of us are more even-handed with emotion while some of us tend to 'feel' a lot more. When explaining the #workstyles model, I mentioned in passing that our individual profile can have an impact on the type of work we do best in or in the case of the students, their field of specialisation. It wasn't entirely in keeping with the topic I was speaking on but such was the interest in it. So, when we had a break, I hurriedly constructed some slides to give them a better understanding. That's the story that the visual tells - how we could consider a field of work/specialisation based on our #workstyles profile I remember one student in particular. She said that her father (who was a well known surgeon) wanted her to follow in his footsteps. Now, look at the Blue/Green 🔵🟢 descriptors and you can understand why such a profile would suit a surgeon to the 't'. This student's profile? Low Blue 🔵 Moderate Green 🟢 Very high Red 🔴🔴 High Yellow 🟡 She wanted to do paediatrics but her father had other ideas. "Well, you have the evidence of what you enjoy doing and one thing I can say with a fair degree of certainty is that you are not your father" I really could not say any more than that. Let me ask you this question: Do you, typically, feel tired but energised at the end of your work day?, or Do you often feel drained with little left to give at the end of the day? Your answer to this probably indicates whether what you enjoy doing and what you actually do at work are aligned or not #leadershipdevelopment #teamdevelopment #hrbp

Who can afford to work for free? This expectation excludes those from lower socioeconomic backgrounds, perpetuating inequality and limiting diversity in an industry that desperately needs varied perspectives. While the panelists championed cross-sector collaboration and the integration of AI in sustainability, the practicality of these suggestions remains murky at best. And let’s not forget the elephant in the room - the event held at Uniqlo’s store.
