Brits are doing more than just getting behind the wheel in their cars, they’re getting behind each other too.

It turns out that 5.6 million brits had car sex last year alone, while a whopping 23.5 million of us have had a roadside romp in our lifetime. This accounts for 58% of the UK population. (We don’t know about you but we’re going to think twice about where we sit when we get a lift from a friend now.)

But some parts of the UK are spicier than others it seems, with Belfast coming in top as the car sex capital of the UK – that’s sure to attract tourists and doggers alike.

In fact, the Irish in the capital had a particular affinity for sex in an airport car park, with a third of them having steamed up their car windows.

Following the roads over the Scotland we have Edinburgh, where 24% had had sex in their car – including masturbating too.

However, it seems the Scottish aren’t very subtle as they were also the most likely to get caught doing the deed by the police – talk about a rabbit caught in headlights.

Liverpudlians were third on the list when it came to getting their kit off in the backseat. More than a fifth (22%) of them had done the deed – saucy.

In joint fourth place we have Manchester and Birmingham, both with a fifth of residents having car sex. Although Mancunians are definitely more spicy, with them being the most likely to have had a threesome in their motor.

Lastly, we have London. It seems the congestion on the M25 is doing wonders for people’s sex lives, as 15% of Londoners admitted to getting down and dirty on the motorway.

It goes without saying that car sex isn’t advisable. Under the Road Traffic Act 1988 (dangerous/careless driving) you can be fined if they are caught performing sex acts in a vehicle as this would be considered a distraction.

Fines range from a £100 fixed penalty notice and can rise to £5,000 and nine penalty points if you put other road users at risk.

Under the Sexual Offences Act 2003, indecent exposure is outlined as intentionally showing your genitals in a public place in order to cause alarm or distress.

Penalties for indecent exposure and public indecency can be severe. Depending on the court the trial is heard in, this can range up to a maximum of an unlimited prison sentence and/or an unlimited fine.

The research from Big Motoring World also found there are certain drivers who own particular car makes, that are more likely to take these risks than others.

Not to be judgemental over here, but we weren’t exactly surprised that Audi drivers were the most likely to have car sex (32%). They already have a reputation for poor road etiquette.

Fiat drivers were next, with 31.6% of them getting steamy in their motor. BMW drivers were next at 30% – again we aren’t all that surprised.

It turns out Jaguar drivers are naughty too, with 29% of them doing the deed inside their vehicles, while Honda drivers came in fifth at 26%.

Cars are hotbeds for cheating too. Bentley drivers were found to be the most likely to have cheated on their partner in their car in the last year, with a whopping 79% of them having done so.

But why are us Brits so turned on by the idea of doing the deed in a cramped car with the seats rolled down?

Psychologist Dennis Relojo-Howell at Psychreg, explains: ‘First, there’s the thrill of novelty and adventure.

‘Engaging in sexual activities in a car deviates from the norm and introduces an element of unpredictability and spontaneity, which can heighten excitement and arousal.

‘Second, there’s the aspect of risk. The risk of being caught or seen adds an adrenaline rush that can be very stimulating.

‘This ties into the broader psychological concept of ‘risky behaviour’ being enticing because it breaks societal norms and rules, providing a sense of rebellion and freedom.’
