The highly-anticipated Willow series has been cancelled after just one series.

The TV adaptation of the classic 1988 Ron Howard movie of the same name brought back leading cast member Warwick Davis and followed the events from the blockbuster film.

However, just two months after the series concluded, it’s been canned, according to Deadline.

Set 20 years after the original movie, the series followed Willow Ufgood (Davis) again but with a new bunch of characters.

The official synopsis read: ‘In a magical world where brownies, sorcerers, trolls, and other mystical creatures flourish, the adventure continues, as an unlikely group of heroes set off on a dangerous quest to places far beyond their home, where they must face their inner demons and come together to save their world.’

Ellie Bamber, Ruby Cruz, Erin Kellyman, Amer Chadha-Patel and Tony Revolori all joined Davis, but Val Kilmer was sadly unable to return as Madmartigan due to ill health.

He was forced to drop out late in the process due to the pandemic.

Showrunner Jonathan Kasdam explained: ‘We were prepping in the spring of the year that it was most happening. And Val reluctantly didn’t feel he could come out.’

Kasfam was hopeful to get Kilmer on board for a second season though.

He continued to Entertainment Weekly: ‘We wanted to leave open the door to any possibility in the future and also honour the spirit of him.’

Sadly, the future of Willow looks doubtful.

Willow is available to stream on Disney+.
