A new Channel 4 documentary will share the reasons behind The Jeremy Kyle Show being axed.

The Jeremy Kyle show was abruptly pulled off air in 2019, after Steve Dymond took his own life after appearing on the show.

Dymond died by suicide shortly after failing a notoriously unreliable lie-detector to prove whether he had cheated on his partner.

Channel 4 launched an investigation into the daytime show following Dymond’s death, and will air the two-part documentary to reveal their findings.

Other shocking secrets are set to unfold, including allegations by staff members that they were ‘treated like rats in a lab’.

Someone else who worked on The Jeremy Kyle Show said they would get calls ‘virtually every week’ from people threatening to kill themselves after appearing.

In response to the Channel 4 documentary, ITV issued a statement which said: ‘The Jeremy Kyle Show had extensive and detailed duty of care processes in place for contributors built up over 14 years. It had a dedicated guest welfare team of mental healthcare professionals with decades of experience in NHS mental healthcare, who were focused on the welfare of guests throughout the production process.

‘Guests were supported by the programme and welfare teams prior to filming, throughout filming and after filming. Should they require ongoing help then appropriate solutions were found for them, which could include residential rehabilitation, counselling, anger management, family mediation, child access mediation or couples counselling.

‘All guests on the Jeremy Kyle Show were aware of the nature of the show and the presenter’s style before taking part in recording. Most of those who applied to appear watched the show themselves. All guests gave their informed consent, in writing, to take part. Since 2018, ITV had taken significant steps in relation to its duty of care of participants. ITV issued detailed new guidance to all its producers on protecting participants in October 2019…’

Who was Steve Dymond?

Dymond was a digger driver from Portsmouth who appeared on The Jeremy Kyle Show in an attempt to prove he hadn’t cheated on his fiancée Jane Callaghan.

According to his landlady, who Dymond had moved in with during the breakdown of his relationship, the father went on the show ‘to prove his faithfulness’.

Speaking to The Daily Mail, she said that it was claimed that after failing a lie detector test, ‘the studio audience turned on him and he thought about suicide in the hours afterward’.

According to The Daily Mail, Dymond had reconnected with his estranged son in the days leading up to his death, where he learned he was a grandfather.

Before that, his landlady had claimed he had returned from filming the show ‘sobbing and distraught’ on May 2.

She said: ‘Four days later he was dead. I really believe it was the show that tipped him over the edge.’

What happened to Steve Dymond?

Dymond, who died at the age of 62, took his own life 10 days after filming, with his landlady discovering his body.

During the episode, which never made it to air, presenter Kyle called tragic guest Dymond a ‘serial liar’ and said he ‘would not trust him with a chocolate button’.

The ITV host also made the comment: ‘Has anyone got a shovel?’

Hampshire coroner Jason Pegg laid out the remarks made by Kyle in his ruling stating that he would be an interested person in the inquest because ‘he may have caused or contributed’ to Dymond’s suicide.

At the time, he said: ‘I have had the opportunity to view The Jeremy Kyle Show episode featuring the deceased.

‘In that footage it is apparent that Jeremy Kyle was aware that the deceased had previously been unable to appear on The Jeremy Kyle Show having been diagnosed with depression, for which the deceased had been prescribed anti-depressant medication.

‘After the lie detector results, the deceased looked visibly upset.

‘Jeremy Kyle adopted an approach where he called the deceased a “serial liar”, that he “would not trust him with a chocolate button”; and made a comment: “Has anyone got a shovel?”’

Jane explained to The Sun that Steve had been diagnosed with depression, telling them: ‘He wanted to go on. He was really excited and confident.

‘But it was all a front and I knew it. He wasn’t well at all.’

Dymond’s episode never aired on ITV and all episodes of the show were immediately pulled from ITV Hub and YouTube.

What happened to Jeremy Kyle?

After hosting the popular show which attracted millions of viewers for 14 years, Kyle was suddenly out of work, but not for long.

Although the show was cancelled in 2019, Kyle landed a new gig joining talkRadio in September 2021 with a regular slot presenting Drivetime.

Kyle told The Sun that the fallout from the cancellation of his show left him ‘completely devestated’ and unable to ‘leave the house or even open any curtains.’

While he grew unpopular with audiences, Kyle also admitted his celebrity friends disappeared following the controversy that followed the cancellation of his show.

The former presenter told The Sun following Dymond’s death: ‘I’m not asking for any sympathy, but being completely honest, yes, it was a very difficult time.’

He addedthat the fallout from the cancellation of his show left him ‘completely devestated’ and unable to ‘leave the house or even open any curtains.’

‘It didn’t take long for some people I’ve known for many, many years to just disappear.’

He added: ‘It’s a strange situation because you don’t really want to talk to people when something like that happens, but then you’re annoyed when they don’t call too.’

The father-of-five has also been busy at home, as he welcomed a son with his wife Vicky Burton in January 2020 and became a grandfather in 2018.
