Netflix fans have labelled the second season of an animated series a ‘cinematic triumph’.

The adult animated steampunk action-adventure series Arcane is set in Riot’s League of Legends universe and primarily focuses on sisters Vi and Jinx, who are voiced by Hailee Steinfeld and Ella Purnell.

The first season was released in 2021, followed by another, which premiered last week.

The synopsis for the show teases: ‘Amidst the escalating unrest between the rich, utopian city of Piltover and the seedy, oppressed underbelly of Zaun, sisters Vi and Jinx find themselves embroiled in a developing conflict over clashing convictions and arcane technologies.’

The series, which holds a 100% rating on review site Rotten Tomatoes, has been praised by viewers, some of whom have called it ‘the greatest animated series of all time’.

‘Arcane Season 2 is nothing short of a cinematic triumph, raising the bar for animated series and once again redefining what’s possible in storytelling. Riot Games and Team have crafted a series that isn’t just for fans of League of Legends; it’s for anyone who appreciates an expertly woven narrative, compelling characters, and breathtaking animation,’ user MusicH posted.

‘Absolutely masterful. A lot of love went into this, and it shows. When so much content out there is empty and devoid of depth, Arcane stands out and gives me hope,’ Max shared.

‘Dark, gritty but so emotional. The first three episodes blew every single expectation I had out the water. It feels like torture having to wait for the next set of episodes,’ Ellen added.

Others called it ‘breathtaking’, ‘mind-blowing’ and a ‘work of art’.

Arcane is based on the popular multiplayer online battle arena game League of Legends, which was developed and released by Riot Games in 2009.

The co-creators, Christian Linke and Alex Lee have previously explained they were initially drawn to Vi and Jinx’s origin story after having worked carefully on the characters for League of Legends.

Ahead of season 2’s release, Hailee said she hoped fans could ‘watch it and feel like they can lose themselves in it’.

‘It’s heartbreaking and beautiful and devastating, and it feels satisfying. I’m really excited for people to watch it,’ Ella added when speaking to Netflix’s Tudum.

Despite the show wrapping up, Linke has said this was ‘just the beginning of our larger storytelling journey’

‘From the very beginning, since we started working on this project, we had a very specific ending in mind, which means the story of Arcane wraps up with this second season. But Arcane is just the first of many stories that we want to tell in Runeterra.’

Arcane is streaming on Netflix.
