Breaking New Ground in Balochistan's Agriculture IWMI joined forces with the University of Loralai (UoL) and the Agriculture Department of Balochistan to host a two-day workshop. Held at UoL, the event focused on climate-resilient crops and smart water management practices. Participants received a practical training session on wheat cultivation at a farmer's field in Oryagai, Loralai. This was IWMI's first-ever demonstration of innovative farming techniques in Balochistan, showcasing raised beds, ridges, drip irrigation, and conventional flatbeds for high-yielding and climate-resilient wheat planting. Funded by the European Union (EU) under the Revival of Balochistan Water Resources Program, this initiative aims to revolutionize agricultural practices in the region. The training gave stakeholders a deeper understanding of cost-effective, low-pressure drip irrigation systems and their applications. During lively discussions, participants explored policy recommendations and strategies to promote resilient crop varieties and enhance water resource management. This collaborative effort reinforces our commitment to supporting sustainable agriculture and equipping stakeholders with the tools and knowledge to adapt to Balochistan's evolving climatic challenges. #OneCGIAR

IWMI under its CGIAR NEXUS Gains Initiatives, organized a 3-day training on Hydrological Modeling using SWAT+ Model, in Islamabad. This intensive training gave participants a comprehensive understanding of the SWAT+ Model, a state-of-the-art tool for simulating hydrological processes. Muhammad Jehanzeb Masud Cheema Researcher/Deputy Country Representative, Asif N., Researcher at IWMI Pakistan and Dr. Sikandar Ali, Consultant, led the sessions and offered guidance and support to the participants. The SWAT+ Model is a widely used, open-source hydrological modeling tool that simulates the impact of land management practices on water, sediment, and nutrient yields. A significant outcome of the training was expanding the 'community of practice' approach, led by the IWMI team. This initiative brought together around 10 organizations, including irrigation departments from KP, Punjab, Sindh and Balochistan, Water & Sewerage Authorities, PARC, PCRWR, Federal Ministry of Water Resources, Federal Ministry of Climate Change, academia, and representatives from the industrial sector. This community of practice will facilitate the discussion of common challenges, the sharing of knowledge, and the development of solutions for implementation. The successful completion of this training program marks a significant milestone in enhancing the capacity of professionals to address complex water management challenges as they are now equipped to apply new skills and knowledge to drive positive change in their respective fields. #OneCGIAR

🌊 Innovating Water Management in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa 🌊 IWMI under the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office-funded Water Resource Accountability in Pakistan (#WRAP) programme, hosted a transformative workshop in Peshawar to address Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s critical water resource challenges. With groundwater depletion at 1.44 meters annually and nearly 45% of water samples deemed unsafe, the event brought together policymakers, researchers, and practitioners to develop sustainable solutions. The workshop featured key discussions on Water Resources Assessment, Groundwater Management Information System (#GMIS), and Early Drought Warning System (#EDWS). Officials from the KP Water Regulatory Authority discussed the role of the KP Water Act 2020 in enabling integrated water management and cooperating to ensure sustainable water use for future generations. By addressing institutional and data gaps, the workshop proposed innovative strategies such as aquifer recharge through small dams and conjunctive water use, ensuring better resource management and resilience against climate impacts.
