Their Future. Their Demands. The Yaounde African youth call on more than doubling of Adaptation Finance for a Resilient Africa, arguing that a large raise in the share of adaptation finance in the overall climate finance portfolio matches the needs and costs of adaptation for African nations. Here's what they're suggesting: https://lnkd.in/dNctx66w

The 'Fossils Implicated' Report, through case studies, dispels myths and amplifies African perspectives. For one, the fossil fuel industry has promoted one side of a complex story, positioning extraction as a source of public revenues, jobs and energy access. But the lived experiences of Africa’s communities tell a rather different story. https://lnkd.in/dKGS5gQJ #FossilFuel #ClimateCrisis #Africa

The reluctance and self-centeredness of advanced economies foreshadow an uneven and inequitable fight against climate change, in the midst of an AI revolution conversation steered by said economies. Quoted in the article, Mohamed Adow, Director of Power Shift Africa had this to say, ''The rich world staged a great escape in Baku. With no real money on the table, and vague and unaccountable promises of funds to be mobilised, they are trying to shirk their climate finance obligations.'' “The seas are corning into our houses, which are already built on tall wooden post foundations... we have nowhere else we can go.” The International Court of Justice listened to climate victims in hearings after the court was asked to give an advisory opinion on 'the obligations of states in respect of climate change.' It's surely time to put human faces on this abstract problem. Don't you think? See more here: https://lnkd.in/gC7FcEVT

According to the World Bank, Malawi has achieved respectable gross domestic product (GDP) growth in the past, averaging 5% between 2004 and 2019 (World Band 2024). However, Malawi faces significant difficulties in achieving inclusive and sustainable growth. Power Shift Africa and the University of Technology Sydney-Institute for Sustainable Futures (UTS-ISF) have developed a comprehensive energy pathway for Malawi that is aligned with the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement. The compounded effect of shocks, such as intensifying conflict, El Niño-induced drought and high domestic food prices drove worsening food crises in 18 countries by mid-2024. Watch this documentary on a severe drought in Southern Africa which left an estimated 70 million people facing acute food shortage, with Zambia, Zimbabwe and Malawi among the hardest hit. https://lnkd.in/d_eSSJDT

On this #FlashBackFriday we spotlight this engaging moment where Mohamed Adow, Director, Power Shift Africa is huddled with the global media in solidarity with AOSIS & LDCs following their walkout from negotiations at COP29 to protest the weak and unfair finance deal. Mohamed criticised developed countries for their refusal to honour their obligation through payment of the climate debt owed to poor countries. He also called out the EU for endorsing the initial text that provided $250 billion in climate finance.

CLIMATE FINANCE IS NOT AN ACT OF CHARITY At the height of negotiations during #COP29, Bhekumuzi Dean Bhebhe talked to Michelle Craig from Newzroom Afrika about the G20 Summit in Brazil and the opportunity it presents to African leaders. Climate finance is more than an act of charity, but rather a moral obligation and responsibility that rests on accountability, he said. On the continent, environmental 🌿🌿degradation is often rooted in weak governance, corruption, and the unchecked power of multinational corporation. But now, courts are emerging as a crucial avenue for seeking justice where communities can challenge environmental violations and demand accountability. Is there a workaround for the limitations in environmental litigation? This piece by Karabo Mokgonyana (She/Her) dives deeper into this conversation.
