Members of the Craft have developed forensic science, solved famous crimes and invented all manner of things. Several members of the royal family have been members of the Craft and the declining interest in the organisation from younger royals is also discussed. Masons have been very active in the criminal justice system – both as ‘goodies’ and ‘baddies’. It was a Mason who formed the Special Branch to fight terrorism and another who brought the Moors Murders to an end. In some cases, such as the Cleveland Street Scandal, Masons found themselves on both sides of the law. The medical profession is also well-represented in lodges. Happily, it was a member of the Craft who rescued the Elephant Man and a Masonic doctor was the first to identify an occupational cancer. On the other side of the coin, there have been evil Masonic doctors who committed murder and other heinous crimes. One Masonic surgeon may have committed regicide with the ‘mercy killing’ of a king. In addition, there are stories of weird and wonderful Masons – celebrities, film makers, soldiers, explorers, world-famous businessmen, politicians, forgers and scoundrels. New Zealand pilot Phillip Mehrtens was released by West Papua insurgents more than 18 months after being kidnapped while working for Indonesian airline Susi Air. He was abducted by rebels from the West Papua National Liberation Army (TPNPB) on February 7, 2022, at Nduga airport, where they also set fire to his plane and released five passengers. Mehrtens was handed over to the Cartenz Peace Taskforce, a joint Indonesian security force dealing with separatist groups in Papua, and was found to be in good health. His release was confirmed by New Zealand Foreign Minister Winston Peters, who expressed relief for Mehrtens’ family and friends. Mehrtens’ abduction was part of the TPNPB's broader campaign for Papuan independence, with the rebels demanding that Indonesia recognise Papuan independence in exchange for his release. His captivity included sporadic video appearances under duress. Mehrtens’ release was the result of intense diplomatic efforts between New Zealand and Indonesia. During his 592-day ordeal, Mehrtens played a crucial role in providing air links and supplies to remote communities. While it is unclear if New Zealand made any concessions, it is likely that they will be doing something for the group; however, it is highly unlikely that this will go as far as recognising their claim. It is more likely that New Zealand agreed to support the group in pressuring Indonesia to give the region more autonomy, possibly with the goal of it becoming a self-governing region, something seen in other places around the world. North Korea launched an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) on Thursday under orders from leader Kim Jong Un, claiming a flight trajectory surpassing previous tests. Kim reportedly observed the launch, describing it as a demonstration of North Korea’s ability to counter its adversaries. This launch occurred shortly after South Korean intelligence indicated that North Korea may soon conduct its seventh nuclear test, with the capability to launch a long-range missile reaching the United States. South Korea and Japan both detected the missile, with the Japanese Defense Ministry noting it reached a height of over 7,000 kilometres and travelled approximately 1,000 kilometres. The United States condemned the launch, calling it a provocation amid escalating tensions. Simultaneously, North Korea has been accelerating its weapons program, with its constitution recently amended to enshrine nuclear capabilities as a strategic priority. Pyongyang has conducted numerous weapons tests, including missiles capable of carrying heavy warheads and possibly even nuclear payloads. In response, South Korea imposed additional export controls on materials for solid-fuel missiles to hinder North Korea’s development of ballistic technology. Why do sanctions matter for Sri Lanka? Shavendra Silva, the Chief of Defence Staff, remains a prominent symbol of unresolved war crimes. Despite a U.S. travel ban due to his involvement in severe human rights abuses during the Sri Lankan civil war, the UK has yet to impose similar restrictions. This discrepancy reveals a critical gap in international accountability that ultimately weakens the global stance against human rights violations.   By hesitating to take similar action, the UK risks sending a message that those responsible for grave abuses can escape consequences. A lack of coordinated sanctions not only emboldens perpetrators but also sidelines victims in their pursuit of justice. Dutch Warship Harassed by Chinese Military Aircraft in East China Sea The Netherlands reported on Friday that a Dutch warship was harassed by Chinese military aircraft in the East China Sea, joining the list of countries accusing Beijing of initiating potentially unsafe encounters in international waters. According to the Dutch Defense Ministry, two Chinese fighter jets circled the frigate HNLMS Tromp while its marine patrol helicopter was "approached" by two Chinese warplanes and a helicopter, creating a potentially unsafe situation. CNN has reached out to the Chinese government for comment on the Dutch accusations. The HNLMS Tromp was operating in the East China Sea in support of a multinational coalition enforcing United Nations sanctions on North Korea, known as the Pacific Security Maritime Exchange (PSMX).
