    "Diversity En Pointe: Minimizing Discriminatory Hiring Practices to Increase Ballet's Cultural Relevance in America" is my final thesis paper concluding the Goucher College Master of Arts in Arts Administration program. I spent one year researching discrimination in the ten largest-budget ballet companies in the United States, with a focus on the following characteristics: height/weight, age, gender, and race. Case studies, articles, interviews, and text research was used to provide a history and base of standards in the ballet field, identify negative consequences of current standards, consider external forces to use as catalysts for change, and provide positive examples of ballet dancers and companies currently prioritizing diversity while continuing to maintain ballet's inherent artistic integrity. The purpose of this paper was not to ignore the source of ballet’s fundamental values, but to consider if, and how, adjustments could be made to better represent and acknowledge the makeup of the American people without compromising the integrity of the art form and its ethnic and cultural heritage.
