The freedom of #journalists is a vital element for accountability and good governance. On #WorldPressFreedomDay, I want to pay tribute to all the journalists who take personal risks to report and investigate - especially where corruption, conflict, human rights and the environment are at stake. Quality information and reportage is essential for #thinktanks and researchers in the field of policy and international affairs, like myself and many of you on Linked-In. This informs our work in trying to improve the basis for multilateral, government, corporate and civil society decision-making on issues including #peace #economics #energysecurity and #climatechange. In 2018, Chatham House awarded its annual Prize to the Committee to Protect Journalists (do check out their work https://cpj.org/thetorch/). Tragically, since then, conditions for journalists have only worsened. Constraints, and in far too many cases, imprisonment and targetted killings across the World are on the rise. In its latest index, Reporters Without Borders (RSF) finds press freedom increasingly threatened by political authorities, as well as the use of #artificialintelligence in spreading disinformation for political purposes (https://lnkd.in/eF8djr-A). A new UNESCO report found that at least 44 journalists investigating environmental issues had been killed over the last 15 years, of which only 5 have resulted in convictions (see below). And in #Gaza and the #WestBank, the killing of journalists has become normalized, with at least 107 dead since October (watch this video by IMS (International Media Support) https://lnkd.in/eR4kjeXi ). 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲: 𝗦𝗜𝗗𝗦 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗕𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝘁 𝗙𝗳𝗗𝟰 The co-facilitators for #FfD4 released their #ElementsPaper on 22 November 2024. It lays out an ambitious roadmap for negotiations starting next week in New York. But Small Island Developing States (#SIDS) hoped for sharper focus on #financing #climate #adaptation and #mitigation. SIDS have championed bold ideas to align financing with #climate #resilience and growth. At the heart of their call is debt forgiveness tied to climate resilience. This approach links debt relief to measurable progress in actions like #renewable #energy, ecosystem restoration, or climate adaptation infrastructure. For SIDS, battling climate crises and mounting debt, this is not just an idea—it’s a potential game-changer. More than 40% of SIDS are nearing or already in debt distress. Many spend more on repaying debt than adapting to climate impacts. Debt forgiveness tied to climate actions would free up resources for investment in their futures. The Elements Paper nods to swaps and climate-resilient clauses. But it stops short of proposing clear pathways for #debt #forgiveness. SIDS have also pushed for simplified debt-for-climate swaps to reduce costs and make these tools accessible. Another priority is blue and green bonds tailored for SIDS. These instruments could fund sustainable projects while attracting global investment. FfD4 must do more than acknowledge SIDS challenges. It must offer bold, actionable solutions. Unlocking resilient prosperity is not charity—it’s the promise of a sustainable future.

“Least developed countries are highly exposed to climate change and natural disasters, which are increasing in both frequency and intensity. The LDC Report remains a key flagship, needed now and tomorrow,” says Annalisa Primi, Head of the Economic and Transformation Division at the OECD Development Centre.
