Aimed at providing guidance for human evaluation of the translation output, ISO 5060 can be applied to workflows involving both human and machine translation with or without subsequent post-editing. The standard combines hands-on advice with the strategic considerations and general principles for translation quality evaluation. It is built on the analytic approach that involves a “bilingual examination of target language content against source language content while classifying any errors with respect to translation evaluation specifications and for the purpose of reaching a quality rating.”

Simultaneous Speech #Translation: from sentence to speech-based approach by Claudio Fantinuoli -- Simultaneous speech translation is shifting from isolated sentence translation to processing larger speech segments, improving semantic and grammatical accuracy. Traditional #machinetranslation often ignored co-text, leading to errors, especially in gendered language. Advances in neural machine translation and large language models now incorporate co-text for more accurate translations. In real-time translation, systems retain prior segments, ensuring consistency, such as gender agreement. For example, "She is very good" is now correctly rendered as "molto brava" in Italian. While challenges like nuanced language and cultural references remain, integrating co-text is a major step forward, making machine #interpreting increasingly reliable. A year ago, we hosted the #Terminology #Academy for the Globalization and Localization Association (GALA) together with specialists and representatives of LSPs, clients and tool vendors. In addition to the summary presentation at the GALA Conference in #Valencia, Isabella Massardo asked me for a short interview with the main learnings, such as: - Return on Investment: Why are there no agreed-upon metrics around terminology work? And why do we always have time to fix terminology mistakes after translation, but never to prevent them up front? - Business value: Let´s stop talking about consistent language, but tie terminology into the individual stakeholders´ business models. - Upstream: We need to get it right at the source (GIRATS) and push terminology upstream to where the content or even the products are created. - Maturity Model: There should really be a maturity model for terminology. A new study settles a long-standing debate: BOTH accuracy AND fluency matter for top-notch machine translation! For years, experts have questioned the relationship between these two dimensions. Some believed they were a trade-off, meaning improving one sacrificed the other. The agreement has been signed, and your European Works Council (EWC) is officially up and running—congratulations! Now, it’s time to dive into the real work of building connections and making your voice heard. But where do you start? Here are some key things to keep in mind: ✅ Build strong relationships: Take time to get to know your fellow delegates from across different countries. A good working relationship is the foundation for presenting a united front to management. ✅ Learn the ropes: Industrial relations and labour laws vary widely across Europe. Understanding these differences will help avoid misunderstandings and make sure everyone is on the same page. ✅ Stick together: Before facing management, align with your colleagues on key points.
