The idea or the team? There has long been a debate about what is more important: the idea or the team? For me, it's undoubtedly the team! A strong team can overcome any challenges and find the right product and model that will work. We in Mento vc have a checklist where we score each point (from 0 to 5). There is no rule on how many points need to be scored. It’s more for us to ensure we don't forget to look at certain aspects. 1. Founders' experience. Have they built a business before, and to what scale. 2. Industry experience. Do they have experience specifically in the field where they are developing the project. 3. Intelligibility. This is our subjective criterion and can't be quantified 🙂 4. Personality (Match). How well do we fit together? We invest with a horizon of 3-4 years (minimum), which means a long-term partnership. If things don’t click now, it will be difficult moving forward. 5. Team. Who is already on board and what is their background? 6. Location. Where are the team and the founders based. Our team has since expanded to include Torge, our Chief of Staff, and Fernanda, our visiting analyst, currently based in Luxembourg and Munich. Post-pandemic, we believed against the consensus that building a firm apart was possible—we just had to prove it. Remote work naturally sharpens our focus on priorities, which is crucial for any business but also comes with challenges. Here’s how we’ve approached remote work: 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆: We utilise tools like Notion, Asana, Google Docs, Shared Google Calendars and Folk. We also streamline our financial operations by using our own portfolio company cleverlohn for payroll. 𝗙𝗿𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: We hold daily check-ins—morning for strategic decisions and afternoons for operational priorities. If needed, we schedule dedicated calls for deeper discussions on strategic topics. Regular in-person meetings in different cities keep us connected without the overhead of a permanent office. 𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗧𝗮𝘀𝗸𝘀, 𝗥𝗼𝗹𝗲𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁: Remote work demands trust as you cannot see what people are doing, which we build through clearly defined tasks, deadlines and roles. This clarity ensures that everyone is aligned. 𝗗𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗞𝗣𝗜𝘀: Understanding what outcomes need to be achieved every quarter is key. Especially as we continue fundraising and deploying capital. 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲: Our culture is built on radical candor and transparency, ensuring everyone is working towards the same goals. Open discussions and quick feedback loops allow us to address issues openly. This environment encourages accountability and continuous improvement. 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴: We anticipate predictable workload:, such as attending events (booking travel/meetings) and LP updates, by planning and working ahead of time. This allows us to be proactive rather than reactive, a necessity in remote work where spontaneous problem-solving isn’t as easy. How is 2024 going for the European VC ecosystem? Well the market seems to stabilise around what could be call a « new normal ». What are the indicators? The number of deal, even though decreasing year on year (-26.6%), is stabilizing at 2398 deals.  The deal value also stabilize at 16.3€B raised by start-ups in Q1 2024. It’s a 18.9% increase YoY. After the 2021 VC hype, a new normal seems to be seeting in since 2022. The amount raised by start-ups now ranges from 13.5€B to 20€B.  To give a comparison point amount raised pre-covid was ranging between 9€B and 15.8€ per quarter. But in this new normal a problem still remains : exits. Start-ups and VCs are still struggling to find a liquidity to get out of deal. Analysts are predicting that 2024 will look like 2023 on this point. For the moment only 1.9€B has been exited (VS 14.9€B in 2023). Only two sectors are doing well in terms of exits : Pharma & Biotech. Thanks to big incumbents, start-ups in these sectors are being acquired, mainly for their technology and IP.    In short, 2024 seems to be a normal year post-covid year in Europe. The only surprises that we can expect will come from the AI ​​which continues to be in a hype cycle.

🔥🇮🇹🚀 Hot Italian Startups that are too early for me or not in scope but deserve a shoutout The Italian ecosystem is booming, and I’m not sure the rest of Europe knows that, so in the next days I’m going to share a few startups, telling you what I like about them in (kind of) detail Let’s start with an obvious one ☢️ GraphiCore  What happens when you put a bunch of PhDs in nuclear engineering in a room with some metal spare parts and electronics? They are going to build a robot to handle radioactive graphite bricks, necessary for the decommissioning of nuclear reactors, obviously 🙄 What I like about it 1️⃣ A billion dollar problem 💰  There are “hundreds of thousands of tons” of radioactive graphite bricks in Europe that need to be handled for the decommissioning of old reactors. That’s a monumental problem and existing solutions on the market are not optimal yet. Graphicore is changing this 2️⃣ Honestly, just a cool technology 🦑  With its squid inspired suction cups, the team managed to build a robot that can be easily industrialised and produced, managing to lift 3 times the weight (Never done before!!!) of the graphite brick during tests. Check the website to see the video, pretty cool 3️⃣ Atomic team ⚡️  Definitely not your average nuclear engineers. These guys mix great technical knowledge with some pretty convincing charisma while pitching. They are out there talking to future customers and partners, with a clear idea of where the company is going. Early stage venture investing is very interesting and unique, it relies less on numbers and more on identification of right teams working in the right markets. We are looking for characteristics like perseverance, humility, hustle and hunger to win. We look for founders that can thrive in chaos of early stage startup and find the answers to what their customers really want.. or even who the real customers actually are !! Personally doing this for the last 6 months has been one of the most satisfying work that I have ever done. I can now read about all the random things in the world from technology to economy to politics without any guilt. I get to dive deeper into the most amazing ideas and companies. I can do true problem solving with some of the smartest people I have ever known. 💼 Venture Finance Update: 🇪🇺 European 🇪🇺 Startup Funding Trends in September 2024 As September progresses, European startups are continuing to secure significant funding, showing strength and growth in the ecosystem. Some of the key deals in the past 10 days include: Form3 raised $60 million in a Series C extension on September 10, 2024, led by British Patient Capital. The funding round brings Form3's Series C total to $220 million, supporting its expansion in payment infrastructure for major banks and fintech firms​. 💳 CardiaTec Biosciences secured $6.5 million in seed funding on September 10, 2024, led by Montage Ventures. The funding will help advance its computational platform, which focuses on decoding cardiovascular disease biology using multi-omics data. This enables the discovery of new drug targets and therapies for heart disease, the leading global cause of death​. ❤️ CorFlow Therapeutics raised $48.5 million in a Series B funding round on September 10, 2024. The funding, co-led by Broadview Ventures Inc Ventures and Panakes Partners, will support the development of CorFlow's CoFl system, a diagnostic and drug delivery platform for detecting microvascular obstruction (MVO) in heart attack patients.
