Italy is working towards significant clean energy targets to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. The country aims to achieve a 65% share of renewable energy in its electricity production by 2030. Aligned with national and European decarbonization plans, and to help boost the amount of carbon-free, renewable energy in Italy to 40% of total generation, Gruppo Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane (FS Italiane) is installing a network of solar farms across the country that will generate 2 gigawatts of renewable energy by 2028. Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI), a subsidiary of FS Italiane and responsible for Italy's railway infrastructure, will procure clean energy from this project to help power the national railway system. Once completed, this will be a significant step towards a cleaner energy mix for more sustainable travel and the region as a whole. Each site, in 26 different locations, not only needs solar panels but also structural supports, monitoring, and security setups, as well as roads and fencing. Italferr, a partner on the project, used Bentley software and other digital tools to help manage the sprawling, complex project. The team also created a digital twin for each project which helped stakeholders understand the project design and reduced the need for on-site travel. The solar farms will capture solar energy and convert it into electricity using photovoltaic panels connected to electrical substations. In the electrical substations, the energy is transformed to the appropriate voltage levels for transmission to overhead contact lines to power the trains. By using solar energy to generate clean electricity, the railway system can lessen Italy's dependence on imported fossil fuels, significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the railway sector, and contribute to the country's clean energy goals. The EU Solar Charter was signed in Brussels, at the Palais d’Egmont, and was signed by 23 Member States: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, and The Netherlands. In addition, ESIA’s steering committee comprised of EIT InnoEnergy, The European Solar Manufacturing Council (ESMC) and SolarPower Europe were present to sign the Charter.

🔦 Eurogas congratulates Eni and Snam S.p.A. on launching #RavennaCCSproject, Italy’s first carbon capture, transport, and storage (#CCS) project for reducing CO2 emissions in hard-to-abate sectors!   🔧 In the initial phase of this landmark project, launched earlier this month, #CO2 from Eni’s gas treatment plant in Ravenna is being captured, transported via converted pipelines, and stored deep underground. The project is already reducing CO2 emissions from the plant by over 90%—with peaks reaching 96%.   🏭 In the following phase, with industrial-scale development expected to be reached before 2030, this project has the potential to become Italy’s decarbonisation hub, offering CCS solutions to #hardtoabate sectors where it is one of the most promising decarbonisation technologies.   💡 CCS is recognised internationally as having a vital role to play in #emissionreductions. The filling of the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Storage and Gasification Station, developed by enaon EDA, the Hellenic Gas Distribution Company, a subsidiary of Enaon from the Italgas Group, was successfully completed at the Industrial Park of Kastoria. This project aims to bring natural gas to the areas of Kastoria and Argos Orestiko, which will be the first regions in Greece to be supplied with LNG. In Kastoria, the transport of LNG was carried out by DEPA Commercial using a specially designed LNG truck equipped with an insulated tank to keep the gas in liquid form. This refueling marks a milestone in DEPA's strategy to deliver natural gas across Greece, particularly to remote areas not connected to the national grid, supporting the country’s energy transition and climate goals.
