FAO formalized its membership as a founding member of the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty, a G20 initiative championed by Brazil to dramatically expedite efforts to achieve the eradication of poverty and hunger by 2030 as well as to reduce inequalities. In joining FAO said it “commits to collaborate with other Alliance members to develop innovative solutions and share good practices in learning and knowledge exchange and dissemination on voluntary and mutually agreed terms, data collection and analysis, including by leveraging existing local, national, and international knowledge networks, coalitions, communities and other fora related to aspects relevant to the fight against hunger and poverty.” The Global Alliance has garnered unanimous support at G20 members this year. It will be formally launched at the G20 Leaders Summit in mid-November. Numerous international financial institutions and UN agencies have or are expected to join along with governments, philanthropic foundations and knowledge institutions. https://lnkd.in/eQjGY_6u

Agrifood systems hold the solutions to #ClimateChange, biodiversity loss and land degradation. Discover how #ClimateAction through agrifood systems can help us build a resilient future with food security for all.👇 #COP29

At the UN Climate Change Conference #COP29 @FAO Director-General QU Dongyu stressed that the only way to reduce carbon emissions and restore nature on the path to limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius is to transform our agrifood systems. This transformation to more efficient, more inclusive, more resilient and more sustainable global agrifood systems is increasingly recognised as essential for achieving the Paris Agreement and the #SDGs. The shift “holds solutions for the climate crisis and the interlinked challenges of food, water, land and biodiversity,” said QU Dongyu. Farmers, herders, fisherfolk, and producers are on the frontlines of the climate crisis, and all too often, are among the 730 million people facing hunger today. FAO Director-General said that transforming agrifood systems requires more financing and investments that reach agricultural communities, leveraging private investments, and help in repurposing agricultural investments. Qu stressed that agrifood systems must be integrated into national plans and prioritised in multilateral environmental agreements. Every Nationally Determined Contribution should reflect the full potential of climate action from agrifood system transformation. Directing finance to agrifood systems and ensuring this finance effectively reaches agricultural communities is critical. Read more: https://lnkd.in/gMS5m6Pb

Nitrous oxide (N₂O) is rapidly accelerating #ClimateChange and damaging the ozone layer, jeopardizing the 1.5°C warming target and posing a serious threat to public health, according to a new report by FAO, UN Environment Programme, Climate & Clean Air Coalition and The International Nitrogen Management System (INMS) launched at #COP29. The report signals that emissions are rising faster than expected, and that immediate action is required to curb the environmental and health impacts of this super pollutant. Nitrous oxide is approximately 270 times more potent than carbon dioxide in terms of warming the planet, and currently responsible for approximately 10 percent of net global warming since the industrial revolution. Primarily emitted from agricultural practices such as the use of synthetic fertilizers and manure, N₂O is the third most significant greenhouse gas and the top ozone-depleting substance still being released into the atmosphere.
