Research & analysis of environmental policy in India’s transport sector
About us
The International Council on Clean Transportation is an independent nonprofit organization founded to provide first-rate, unbiased research and technical and scientific analysis to environmental regulators. Our mission is to improve the environmental performance and energy efficiency of road, marine, and air transportation sectors and fuels, in order to benefit public health and mitigate climate change. Air pollution, especially particulate matter, is a serious challenge in India, and transportation is a significant factor in the nation’s air-quality problems. Premature deaths from diseases directly related to air pollution in India total 1.1 million a year. The country’s vehicle fleet is expanding rapidly with sales reaching 21 million in 2016, and the number of vehicles on the road is expected to double to 200 million by 2030. In 2016, India adopted Euro 6/VI-equivalent standards to go into effect in 2020. The ICCT’s India staff works with policymakers to further mitigate vehicular air pollution. "We have established by now that vehicular #Pollution is one of the biggest contributing factors to Delhi’s pollution, and heavy vehicles like buses have the maximum share. Considering the increasing severity of the problem every year, the transport department needs to take stringent measures like completely stop the entry of buses with #emission levels below BS-6 into Delhi, and reprioritise deployment. Additionally, it should encourage #ZeroEmission #ElectricBuses through financial and non-financial means like access to inner city areas and priority parking at depots,”- Amit Bhatt was quoted in the latest story by Snehil Sinha in Hindustan Times about DTC's plans to segregate Delhi's ISBTs by bus origin to reduce pollution and congestion. 📣 ⚡️ India’s #ElectricVehicle (#EV) market showed momentum in the first half of 2024. EV sales increased 16% to approximately 58,000 vehicles, and 99% of these battery electric vehicles, demonstrating India’s commitment to fully electric mobility. While #EVs currently represent 2% of total vehicle sales, manufacturers are expanding their electric offerings: ◾ Tata Motors remains the largest EV producer, delivering 68% of India’s electric vehicles ◾ MG Motor AE now has EVs making up 33% of its vehicle sales ◾ New players are entering the market, increasing consumer choice This growth and commitment to battery electric vehicles positions India’s automotive sector for a cleaner future. ☀️ ️ #ElectricVehicles 🔗 https://lnkd.in/ekCDdgUZ

One of our reports authored by Aviral Yadav and Nikita Pavlenko found that electric heavy-duty vehicles (including #trucks) produced in India today offer the greatest reductions in #GHG emissions and their impact can be increased significantly by a faster phaseout of coal in India’s #ElectricityGrid. When they are powered with #Renewable electricity, the GHG emissions are up to 83% lower! Our latest video we highlight how the adoption of #ElectricTrucks in India and how these trucks can drive India toward a #Sustainable future. 🚛⚡♻️ Electric Trucks Take the Spotlight Under #PMeDRIVE Scheme! In a significant move towards #CleanTransport, the PM E-DRIVE scheme by Ministry Of Heavy Industries has expanded its scope to include #ElectricTrucks! For the first time, this vehicle segment is now eligible for incentives under the scheme, with ₹500 crore allocated over the next two years. According to ICCT’s research, such incentives are key to achieving Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) parity sooner, paving the way for the rapid adoption of electric trucks across India. 🔗 Watch our latest video as we talk about #ETrucks in India and their potential to reduce emissions https://lnkd.in/gEnbiPNR #ElectricTrucks #NetZero #GreenTransport #CleanEnergy #FutureOfTransport
