JF Gauthier's Startup Genome report evaluates five success factors in each ecosystem -- performance, funding, market reach, talent & experience, and knowledge. The report serves as a guide to navigate the characteristics and strategies that enable startups to scale globally. Bengaluru has secured the 21st spot, tied with Sydney, in the list of the top 40 global startup ecosystems, showed the Startup Genome's The Global Startup Ecosystem Report 2024. The city's ecosystem value has experienced a 22% increase, reaching $158 billion for the period from July to December of 2021 to 2023. In the previous year's edition of the report, Bengaluru had climbed two spots to rank 20th. In 2021, Bengaluru was ranked 20. The ecosystem value, as defined by Startup Genome, represents the economic impact, calculated based on the value of exits and startup valuations from the second half of 2021 to 2023. The ecosystem value growth (CAGR) is determined by comparing companies founded in the ecosystem during the second half of 2019–2021 to those founded in the second half of 2021 to 2023. Sandhya Thukaram's recent session on OKR at the #GWPRIndia quarterly meetup had some powerful takeaways. There is nothing "meek" about OKRs, Sandhya reinforced, sharing powerful examples of how she has applied this framework to achieve her personal goals. The GWPR India meetup was thoughtfully divided into two parts: livestreaming the initial learning segment, followed by in-city sharing and discussions. There was much excitement as we recognised faces across cities, resuming connections after years, in some cases decades. This time, our in-city sharing featured career lifelines of our founding members, Deepa Dey (Delhi), Deepshikha Dharmaraj (Mumbai) and myself (Bengaluru). I wish I could have been a fly on the wall to hear about their glorious journeys. I left the meeting having broken ice with talented women in our industry and reconnecting with peers. Commercialising of academic research is still in nascent stages in India -- less than 1% of the 40,000-odd educational institutes in the country invest in deep research. Milestone for ONDC and Namma Yatri ⤵️⤵️ ▶️The Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), an interoperability project backed by the government to break the stranglehold of duopolies Amazon and Walmart on e-commerce, has crossed 100 million transactions in under 18 months. ▶️Also, Google-backed Namma Yatri, a ride-hailing platform on the ONDC and considered a challenger to Ola and Uber, has topped a cumulative $100 million in driver earnings and 50 million trips since its inception. ▶️“ONDC has been established with a very ambitious mission of the democratisation of e-commerce. "One of the things that the NPCI insisted on with UPI right from the beginning was that it had to be free for consumers. This makes it nearly impossible for companies to create a business model built on top of India’s digital public infrastructure—reducing incentives for newer companies to jump in. So while we can all be amazed by hockey-stick growth of UPI’s adoption by consumers, it also reveals why there isn’t a similar growth on the other side, i.e., companies choosing to offer and innovate on UPI. Also, this system has resulted in a situation where even companies can neither relax nor celebrate their success. Can Phonepe and Google Pay truly feel a sense of achievement by watching their increased market share? In an effort to boost investment activity and further drive manufacturing growth across the Indian startup ecosystem, the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) will now likely sharpen its focus on easing early stage funding for startups and bringing down the compliance burden and overall logistics cost as part of its 100-day action plan.
