We scaled payment conversions by 3X for a Series A funded B2C fintech brand while also reducing the cost per conversion. I understand, and have also been the culprit of, the pressures of driving MAUs via push campaigns but at some point- we as marketers need to draw a line. Marketing 7.5L INR (9k USD) as something to "fulfill desires" especially to folks who might not understand the issues of being burdened by additional debt is unfair (I would like to use a different word here- but I won't). In case you think I am taking it too seriously, Debt via such instruments has picked up by 28% (2023 vs 2022) out of which 40% was driven by folks under 30. Household savings are at a 50-year low. Delinquency rates for credit cards rose by 2.9% in June 2023. Maybe instead of pushing them as "desires" we could talk about loans as the last option to help fulfill some urgent tasks/needs. Just some food for thought.

3 reasons why JioCinema is killing it in the #OTT space 🚀: 1. IPL 🏏 Applying the same "ScaleWithScale" philosophy, Jio won over hearts and massive amounts of installs by securing the streaming rights for one of the world's most watched events and offering it for FREE. . Can't even call this a gamble, it was a no-brainer move given Jio's muscle power and India's frenzied cricket fan base. Ok, they have downloads but the majority are free users, how is the company gonna generate their #RoI? That's where point 2 comes in... 2. Smoothest trial experience 💯 I wanted to watch #Avatar and found it being available on JioCinema and was wondering if I was gonna hit an annoying paywall that will definitely convince me to simply not watch it. Surprisingly, I simply tapped the title and started viewing... no frills. No ads, no login, no trial period message....Nothing. It almost felt like a hack or that Jio listed it for free (which was a little suspicious as Avatar is an expensive title to host) Right when I was thinking if Jio is ever gonna get my money, point 3 kicked in. 3. Investment cycle + Price After letting me watch 12 episodes for free they hit me with a paywall asking me to subscribe. The timing was perfect, just enough time and interest invested from the user(me) to want to finish the series. Makes me wonder if they have a specialized tool that analyses behavioral patterns across titles, geography, demography and dishes out personalized investment timelines for different users. It does sound like the perfect job for AI! So once the paywall hit, I felt the usual reaction of irritation and almost gave up watching until I saw the price point. The banner said ₹39. 40 bucks?! that's the cost of a sathukudi juice or 2 cigarettes. The psychological trick here was that they didn't give me option fatigue by offering a yearly package, a 3 month package, bundle package or anything else... just a simple 40 rupees option for a month (which makes sense in my head to watch an entire series considering the cost of a ticket to a movie is 300 bucks types). India's beautiful UPI integration sealed the deal as I ended up paying the amount in a matter of 7 seconds and poof, I was back to enjoying episode 13 of Avatar! (There was a sneaky move they pulled at the UPI page where they increased it to 69 from 39 that they showed me but I let that slide cos I was that deep in the user journey already. I handled total of 200 crore media spends on Meta ads in the last 8 years and here are my top learnings - 1. Campaign structure is super important. Create TOF, MOF, BOF campaign structure but don't keep copy, creatives all same in all 3 campaign funnels. This is where most people go wrong. I see 90% of acqusition and re-targeting campaign creatives and copy are same. Which means massive overlap. Go check your ad frequency today to get a reality check. 2. Add emojis to your headlines and primary text. Test it out. Improves the CTR. Adds some character and not make you sound like a robot. 3. Get an influencer and shoot a video that looks like a UGC video, it will convert better than your high budget videos. Infact, higher your product budget - higher your CAC. 4. Performance Marketing is 30% strategy and ad ops + 40% creatives and copywriting + 10% data analysis + 20% conversion rate optimization 5. Run correlation on multiple variables to find out what is the user's 'Aha moment' event that triggers a purchase behaviour. 6. Never look at overall preset data points that dashboard shows you, look at data points funnel by funnel - landing page to product page view, product page view to add to cart, add to cart to purchase etc. Every funnel against every channel will tell you a different story and will suggest you a true picture. 7. If you are making video ads, first 3 sec hooks are most important than the overall body script. Here is the mental model - Ask yourself - Did you spend atleast 70% of time in writting hook? After diving deep into their Meta ads strategy, we identified key areas to optimize. Here’s what worked: What Didn’t Work: 1. broad targeting: leading to poor ROAS 2. single creatives: assuming one size fits all 3. poor ad copy: focused on features, not emotions What We Changed: 1. segmentation and micro-targeting: Instead of a broad audience, we segmented customers based on behavior, interests, and demographics. Multiple audiences targeted different stages of the funnel—awareness, consideration, and conversion. Tip : A rookie mistake is using broad audiences too early. For scaling, always test smaller, more specific audiences to pinpoint who is converting best. 2. creative testing: We tested multiple creatives, including UGC (user-generated content), testimonial videos, and influencer shoutouts. The goal was to identify the best-performing format for each audience. Tip: Never assume one creative will fit all. Novices often fail to realize that ad fatigue sets in quickly. Refresh creatives every 7-10 days when scaling. 3. ad copy that resonates: We rewrote the ad copy to focus on customer pain points, desires, and benefits, not just product features. The new copy highlighted how the product fit into their lifestyle using emotional triggers like scarcity, urgency, and social proof. Tip: A rookie mistake is to sell only the product. Sell the solution, sell the feeling, and sell the transformation. 4. data-driven optimization: Every decision was based on data. We used advanced tracking to analyze which creatives, ad sets, and audiences were performing best. We adjusted daily budgets accordingly. Tip: Beginner media buyers often set budgets and forget about them. Monitor performance closely and adjust budgets. 5. upsell and cross-sell strategies: We implemented upsell and cross-sell strategies through ads, optimized landing pages, and email sequences, increasing average order value (AOV). Tip: Don’t just focus on getting more customers. Focus on increasing the AOV for every purchase. 6. retargeting with precision: We set up precise retargeting campaigns using dynamic ads. By segmenting website visitors, cart abandoners, and past buyers, we created personalized retargeting campaigns for each group. Tip: Novices often set one retargeting campaign for all users. Retarget based on intent—don’t treat all potential buyers the same. The Result: Within six weeks, we scaled the brand to INR 10 lacs/week consistently, achieving a strong ROAS of 4.5x.
