Why India’s food plate is divided? As the festival season kicks off across India, the calls to ban non-vegetarian food during celebrations grow louder in some states. Yet, behind these debates lies a deeper, often overlooked issue: India’s plate is divided — not just by what we eat, but by who gets to eat what. The data from the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5) reveals a story of nutritional inequality deeply entrenched in caste and gender dynamics. For millions of Indian women, protein rich food remains a distant dream. Among Scheduled Caste (SC) women, only 48.4 per cent report eating eggs, while a mere 37.4 per cent consume fish, and 37.7 per cent eat chicken or meat at least once a week. For Scheduled Tribe (ST) women, the situation is equally dire. Their consumption of protein is limited, with only 46.4 per cent reporting they eat eggs and 36 per cent having access to fish at least once a week. In the Other Backward Classes (OBC) women, just 32.4 per cent consuming fish and 33.7per cent eating chicken or meat. As debates about banning non-vegetarian food gain momentum during the festival season, these statistics reflect an uncomfortable reality. For many women, especially in marginalized caste groups, food choices are not shaped by religious preferences but by economic limitations and social exclusion. In contrast, men across these same caste groups have far greater access to protein-rich foods. Among SC men, 60.8 per cent report consuming eggs, compared to just 48.4 per cent of women. Their access to fish and meat is also much higher among men. In the “Other” category, women show slightly better access to food, with 45.7per cent consuming eggs and 47.7per cent eating a combination of fish and meat. However, even here, men dominate the dinner table. Among them, 58.6per cent consume eggs, 49.7per cent eat fish, and 59.4per cent enjoy chicken or meat at least once a week. The most glaring disparities emerge in the “Don’t Know” category, where 73.6 per cent of men report consuming eggs, compared to just 50.5per cent of women. The data tells a story that goes beyond what is served during festivals. It exposes the harsh realities of India’s gender and caste-based nutritional divide. Men, particularly from higher castes, enjoy significantly better access to protein-rich foods, while women, especially those from SC, ST, and OBC communities, are left with far less. revenue considerations have always been a factor, when the authorities deliberate on the subject. In July 1937, when CR, as the Premier of the erstwhile Madras Presidency, decided to impose prohibition in the then district of Salem initially, the loss of revenue was estimated at ₹11 lakh annually. Likewise, in October 1948, when his successor, Omandur P. Ramaswami Reddiar, covered the then Madras State completely under prohibition, the loss was put at ₹17.5 crore annually. While it is important to fix political accountability on the governance crisis in events like the #DelhiAirportRoofCollapse I find it shallow when journalists reduce it to slanging matches between superficial party spokespersons. Stupid #journalism is part of the problem. Media must dig deep for answers 1. What are the best practices in airport maintenance worldwide in safety audits? Where does DIAL stand? 2. What are GMR & AAI supposed to do? 3. What are the construction/ maintenance warranty periods? 4. Whodunnit? TV #journalism , apart from the #Godimedia problem of simply being lapdogs of the ruling party has been reduced to "Aap isko kaise dekhte hain" levels (Translation: I don't friggin know what to ask). Time to tell them: Get up, move your neurons!

As a health reporter, I get calls and story pitches from multiple PR's associated with hospitals and health start ups, however often the pitch is a generic statement which is a mere repetition of what the client has dictated without any thought into what the reporter would be interested in. I have to repeatedly educate the PR that they need to first go through the kind of stories the reporter reports and pitch their stories accordingly and not just repeat or mail what their client says. The primary job of a PR is to process the information that the client wants to get published in a way that the concerned reporter would also be interested in and most importantly stick to the deadline. #PressRelations #Media #journalism

Was talking to senior comms people and would like to add my two cents here too. PR kids are intelligent and eager, but often they lack proper training. Like in journalism, the bandwagon effect is at play here. Read two PR pitches and you can just replace the name of the client. Please find atatched and appended xxxx, a leading player in... ...coverage in your esteemed publication Exploring authored article... Exclusive article opportunity!... XXx has recorded a net profit of Rs xxxx crore and expanded acrosss xxx locations And so on. I mean, since this is a creative profession, cannot one be a bit more creative? These pitches may work, but even then. Can't the managers tell the PR kids to try and write mails and pitches and press releases which do not sound the same? Can't the mails to every journalist be tweaked a bit to suit his or her style of writing or area of interest? Can't for example, and I am taking this a bit too far, PR pitches have a sense of humour in them? A lot of PR folks I know, surprise me with their skills, but that cannot be said of everyone. The problem here I believe lies entirely with the fact that some agencies do not train their folks or worse, tell them to follow age old and outdated practices. The seniors, even the ones who would like to mentor and guide, often do not have the time to do so. The KRAs often deal with number of coverages and so on, but the finer aspects are neglected. Was having a chat on this with Nanda Padmanabhan SCMP® who is undoubtedly up among the best when it comes to the art of communications. In fact, I consider her as my mentor and the number of times she has helped me understand concepts (in banking) and pull off stories cannot be counted without a supercomputer. She has some serious views on the topics, which I agree to. PR kids, especially the one's starting off their careers need proper guidance. Otherwise, it is seniors like us who are failing them. Which is one reason why will soon share slots every weekend where I can interact with whoever wants to have a chat. And I hope to learn in the process. Plus, the energy of these GenZ folks in infectious. And the way they think is so cool. May just help me to deal with the midlife crisis :)
