Picture yourself needing a mosquito bat in a remote Airbnb late at night, or the convenience of having 10kg bags of rice delivered straight to your door without carrying the carts to parking lot neither carrying in lifts, not to mention daily grocery runs and last-minute orders of socks or underwear before heading to outstation. These are all my real experiences, showing how quick commerce is set to completely transform traditional e-commerce. The new era has already begun, and it's just a matter of time before everyone catches up.

👋 Goodbye Zomato! 📈 Blinkit’s Value Soars Higher Than Zomato's Food Delivery Business 📍 The Blinkit strategy of Zomato has been successful, so much so that the value of Blinkit is now higher than the core business of Zomato which is food delivery. 📍 A report by Goldman Sachs showed how fast Blinkit grew and as a result, the stock price of Zomato skyrocketed. 📍 The worth of Blinkit surged to $13 billion approximately which is a six times increase since March 2023. 📍 This was driven by its outstanding performance with 103% YoY growth in GOV during Q4 December 2023 alone among other things. 📍 Goldman Sachs expects EBITDA breakeven for Blinkit by the end of Q4 FY24 and projects that it will have a better EBITDA margin than any year from 2021 through 2030 over Zomatos food delivery business. 📍 Another notable thing about this analysis was Consumer Sentiment where it turned out that Blinkits had the highest favorability rating among consumers thereby solidifying their position as a strong performer within the market space. 📍 India's quick commerce industry is growing rapidly and could reach up to $150bn in the top 50 cities alone by 2023 addressable market size estimates suggest explosive demand for fast-moving consumer goods. 📍 Blinkit’s performance plus the increase in Zomato’s stock price indicates a bright future.

What made dating apps like Bumble match users based on their proximity and food delivery apps like Swiggy match delivery partners with the nearest point of interest efficiently? All the applications which rely on geo proximity leverage advanced geolocation technologies to enhance user experience and operational efficiency. One such method is geohashing, a geocoding method used to encode geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) [2D geometry] into a short string of digits and letters [1D geometry] delineating an area on a map, which is called a cell, with varying resolutions (sizes). The more characters in the string, the more precise the location (smaller cell). How It Works: Geohash follows the rule of Divide and Conquer. 1. Divide and Encode: Start by dividing the world into four cells, labeled 0, 1, 2, and 3. 2. Zoom In: Select one cell (e.g., cell 2), and divide it into four more cells (2-0, 2-1, 2-2, 2-3). 3. Add Digits: Repeat the process, adding a digit each time to zoom further into the map, providing more precise location details. Real-World Example: Consider San Francisco. After dividing it several levels deep, each cell represents a very small area, allowing precise location identification. For example, the code "9q8yu" represents a specific part of the city, and adding more characters will pinpoint the location even further. Applications: 1. Ride-Sharing: Apps like Uber and Lyft use geohashing to find nearby drivers. 2. Maps & Local Search: Google Maps and Yelp use it to find nearby points of interest, such as restaurants or hiking spots. 3. Social Networking: Chat with people near you within a specific cell and create chat apps. 4. Custom Interactive Apps: Use geohashing to develop real-time, interactive applications. Implementing Geohashing: 1. Obtain the user’s latitude and longitude. 2. Compute the geohash for the user’s location. 3. Determine the prefix length to find nearby points of interest. Longer prefixes mean more precise locations. Why Geohashing? 1. Speed: Geohashing enables rapid proximity calculations, ensuring real-time matching and quick responses. 2. Precision: Adjusting the geohash length allows control over search precision, balancing broad searches and pinpoint accuracy. 3. Scalability: Geohashing efficiently handles large datasets, crucial for apps with millions of users or delivery partners. 4. Reduce the number of computations: Converts 2D geometry to 1D geometry. Disadvantages to geohashing include: 1. Using a grid based geohashing algorithm does not meet high-precision requirements 2. Geohashing deviation changes as latitude increases because the Earth is an irregular ellipse. Popular alternatives for geohash: 1. Quadtree: Hierarchical spatial partitioning; efficient for storage and retrieval; used in GIS and computer graphics. 2. Is it Ethical? We avoid eating out at restaurants because it takes 50 minutes just for the one-way travel. Instead, we order from #Zomato and expect delivery within 40 minutes. I've noticed many Zomato drivers taking significant risks to navigate through traffic. They often cross roads over dividers, and in poorly lit areas, they risk being hit by oncoming vehicles. When there's demand, the market tries to meet it. So, not expecting fast delivery could be one way to reduce these risks. Isn’t similar to avoiding buying textiles from companies who use child labour? What are your thoughts?

Zepto took a piece of pie from Zomato & Swiggy! While working on this teardown, I realised how zepto cafe has managed to increase my average order value from zepto. Calling for a quick snack for random hunger pangs from a Swiggy or Zomato seems inconvenient now ⏳Long Wait (minimum 30 minutes) 🫰Expensive (minimum 250-300 for the order) Zepto solves this issue of a quick snack in 15 mins!! 🌯 🚀 From Problem to Solution: My Zepto Teardown Journey Last week, I started digging into Zepto as part of the exciting Teardown Challenge by Akhil Yash Tiwari in the Product Space cohort. 🛠 Problem Statement: 1️⃣ Boost the AOV to ₹600. 2️⃣ Enhance product discovery and engagement on the app to encourage more frequent and larger orders. 3️⃣ Improve purchase experience Over the past week, I did the following to tackle this: 📊 Analyzed Current Users: I focused on understanding how are people using zepto interns of order value, frequency and what problems they wanted addressed 📲 Leveraged Technology: My solution centered on implementing AI and IoT to manage storage conditions, and using data-driven insights for better personalization. Zepto already has a lot of offer, it must focus on leveraging the massive data that they have and make users feel like zepto truly understands them. 📚 What was my Learning? Swiggy's Public Offering will Test India's Appetite for $1B+ IPOs Swiggy, one of India’s most recognized names in food delivery and quick commerce, is about to make a major splash in the stock market. With its IPO set for Wednesday, the Bengaluru-based startup is not only raising over a billion dollars but is also offering the market a direct comparison to its long-time rival, Zomato—a stock analysts have long considered the “gold standard” for Indian tech listings. Why Swiggy’s IPO Matters Swiggy has already secured $1.4 billion from top investors like BlackRock, Norway’s sovereign wealth fund, and eight of the ten largest Indian mutual funds. Despite India's startup boom, many tech IPOs have underperformed. Take Paytm, for instance—three years post-IPO, its shares are still trading 47% below their debut price. Similarly, beauty e-commerce platform Nykaa and Star Health and Allied Insurance Co. Ltd are down over 50%. A Growing Appetite for Quick Commerce Swiggy’s instamart, its quick-commerce wing, is a game-changer for the startup. Alongside rivals like Zomato’s Blinkit, Zepto, and bigbasket.com, instamart is transforming consumer behavior in urban India by delivering groceries, beauty products, and more—sometimes within 10 minutes! Quick-commerce has surged in popularity, now accounting for 56% of online grocery orders—a figure traditional e-commerce giants like Amazon and Flipkart can only dream of. Morgan Stanley predicts that India’s quick-commerce sector could hit $42 billion by 2030, grabbing a hefty 18% of the total e-commerce market But here’s the twist: while instamart has grown to reach millions of users, it’s still running at a loss, whereas Blinkit, Zomato’s quick-commerce arm, has already hit EBITDA breakeven. Investors and analysts alike wonder if instamart can close this profitability gap—especially as it tries to push into smaller cities and towns. Swiggy vs. Zomato: Who’s Winning? Do we already have the next Zomato ? Zepto has increased their platform fee to Rs. 9.99 i.e ~Rs.10 (Bangalore) and this is the highest platform fee for any e/q-commerce company so far. AoV (Average order value) at Zepto is Rs. 350 for which Delivery is free whereas for order less than Rs. 199 there is a delivery charge of Rs. 27 (Bangalore). Considering a near hypothetical scenario where no. of orders above Rs. 199 is 50% and below Rs. 199 is 50% and total no. of orders is 100 per day. Zepto pay nearly Rs.50 per order to it's delivery guys who delivers close to 35 orders and works on all 7 days of the week. Mon-Fri, Sat and Sunday have three different earning rates and also based on the number of orders delivered on that particular day. 1. Scenario 1: For 50 orders above Rs. 199 : Zepto fixed income is Rs. 10 per order. i.e Rs. 500 per day. For 50 orders below Rs. 199 : Zepto fixed income is Rs. 10 + 27 (delivery cost) per order. i.e Rs. 1850 per day. Total Fixed Income : Rs. 2350 Variable Income - Zepto charges upto 35% commission from some D2C brands which are onboarded recently and on top of that there is an advertising cost. For some established brands, the commission is also lesser like 15-20% range Assuming Blended margin to be 25%, earning from commission on AoV of Rs. 350 is Rs. 87.5 per order. This equates to Rs. 8750 for the assumption of 100 orders. Total Zepto earning : Rs. (8750 + 2350) = Rs. 11100. Zepto's cost of Delivery : Rs. 50*100 = Rs. 5000 (higher side) Profit at Unit Level = Rs. (11100 - 5000) = Rs. 6100/100 i.e Rs. 61 per order. Additional Income : Partner Advertising Income, Listing Fee, Third Party Advertising like Credit Cards etc. Additional Cost : Dark Store Operation, Employee Salary, Server Cost and many things. If the volume doesn't show de-growth and they keep introducing private labels like "Relish Chicken" which has a higher margin. Zepto can be the next Zomato. Antithesis : There is a de-growth already in the D2C space. Due to funding crunch and path to profitability, offers are drying up leading to de-growth of the entire space. If this is actually happening and keeps on declining, Zepto has a problem in hand as these D2C brands are the major spender on Quick Commerce. Quick Commerce is not as bad as it was portrayed 3 years back. It grew on the back of these D2C brands and eventually accepted by Legacy and established brands as well. #entrepreneurship #technology

𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗨𝗣𝗜: 👨‍💻 𝗨𝘀𝗲𝗿: Initiates and receives payments through a UPI app (Gpay, PhonePe, etc.) 💰 𝗣𝗦𝗣: Connects UPI apps to NPCI and may offer additional services. 💼 𝗡𝗣𝗖𝗜: Operates the central switch, routing payments and managing communication. 🏦 𝗜𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗲𝗿 𝗕𝗮𝗻𝗸: Holds the user's funds and debits the account upon authorization. 🏦 𝗕𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗕𝗮𝗻𝗸: Credits the recipient's account upon receiving the payment.
