#BeamMeUp, Scotty - the iconic #StarTrek line may well symbolise #satcom's potential to connect India's under-served, remote, and data-dark terrains. On Friday, #TRAI open house turned into a virtual battleground where titans clashed - Jio, airtel verbally duelled with satellite biggies -- like #ElonMusk's #Starlink and Amazon (Amazon Project Kuiper is Amazon’s low Earth orbit satellite broadband network) -- who are eyeing India's lucrative satcom market. Under the watchful gaze of the regulator, the marathon discussions stretched for over six hours as terrestrial operators made spirited pitch for level-playing-field among the "competing" "substitutable services" and the leading satcom companies argued that justification for administrative assignment of radiowaves is "techno-economic". The open house discussion was punctuated with frequent interjections and counter-arguments, and, at times, emotional outbursts, as opposing camps made their submissions on issues such as pricing, period of assignment of satcom spectrum, frequency bands, roll out obligations, and other nuances. Broadcasting Policy Must Exclude OTT: Stakeholders Urge Trai The media and entertainment industry in India is closely monitoring the formulation of the National Broadcasting Policy (NBP). Recently, stakeholders, including the Indian Broadcasting and Digital Foundation (IBDF) and the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI), have raised concerns about the scope of Trai's recommendations. Background: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has been tasked with shaping the NBP, which will guide regulatory aspects and policy measures related to broadcasting, over-the-top (OTT) platforms, film, music, and online gaming. However, stakeholders are urging Trai to focus solely on broadcasting issues and exclude non-broadcasting areas. Why Exclude OTT? 1. Beyond Remit: Stakeholders argue that Trai has overstepped its jurisdiction by including topics like OTT, online gaming, film, and music. The MIB's reference letter primarily addressed broadcasting sector concerns. 2. Equal Opportunities: Trai's role should be to ensure equal opportunities for all players without discrimination. By narrowing the focus to broadcasting, the policy can address sector-specific challenges effectively. Timeline: Trai's consultation paper, titled "Inputs for the Formulation of National Broadcasting Policy-2024," sought feedback from stakeholders. Trai Chairman Anil Kumar Lahoti announced that NBP recommendations would be issued by the end of May. Key Issues in NBP (as per stakeholders): 1. Definition of Broadcasting in the OTT Age: Clarifying the boundaries between traditional broadcasting and OTT services. 2. Framework for Public Broadcasting: Establishing guidelines for public broadcasting. 3. Audience Measurement: Enhancing accuracy in measuring viewership. 4. Promotion of Local Content: Encouraging content creation within India. 5. Infrastructure Sharing: Addressing infrastructure challenges. While Trai's efforts are commendable, stakeholders emphasize that the NBP should stay true to its broadcasting focus. Hi friends, My story on how revenues from selling streaming rights will grow higher and fetch more revenues to producers than theatrical revenues in the next four years. Rajesh N Naidu Revenues from the sale of digital or streaming rights of films are likely to show higher growth and fetch more revenue to film producers than from theatres in the next four years, according to a recent Media Partners Asia report. Revenues from selling streaming rights of films are likely to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 8.2% to $1.1 billion (about Rs 9,130 crore) by 2028 from $0.8 billion (about Rs 6,640 crore) in 2024, the report estimated. In comparison, revenues from theatres are likely to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 4.6% to US$ 0.6 billion (Rs 4,980 crore) in 2028 from US$ 0.5 billion (Rs 4,150 crore) in 2024, it said. “Premium video on demand revenues, both advertising and subscription, are outpacing traditional box office growth,” said Mihir Shah, vice president, Media Partners Asia. “As the market expands, streaming majors will continue to invest heavily in local original content, particularly movies. In recent years, to deepen their market presence, established players have also focused on acquiring rights to successful regional movies, given the longer timelines involved in commissioning web series.” At present, there are 59 streaming platforms in India. Analysts say that increasing competition among streamers to grab more and more content in creating bigger and more easily accessible libraries for subscribers will drive investments in acquiring films. According to Media Partners Asia, in the next five years, India’s online video industry has a potential to attract investments close to $17 billion. Between 2018 and 2023, investments in local entertainment including scripted, unscripted and sports programming increased to $5.8 billion from $3.3 billion, said the report. Film trade analyst Komal Nahta said, “The growth in revenues from the sale of digital rights may be higher than the growth in revenues from theatrical in the coming years. This is a strong possibility. The habit or ritual of going to theatres every weekend is no longer the norm. A large section of the audience comes to theatres only when spectacular films like Kalki 2898 AD, Baahubali or RRR come to theatres.” It is estimated that there are more than 200 unreleased Hindi films that producers are finding it difficult to release in theatres. Here's a full fledged interactive on election results in India in the past two Lok Sabha elections (held in 2014 and 2019) along with up-to-date phases and turnout data for the ongoing elections in 2024. There are filters to choose to drill the data down further; State/UT dropdown to zoom into States for results data; an urban-cluster dropdown because urban constituencies are highly populous but geographically small and you can see all this in a map based view or a simple list. The interactive was done entirely using d3.js and some python programming, while the underlying data was taken from the Election Commission of India, Trivedi Centre for Political Learning's LokDhaba and the SHRUG database (that provided the building blocks for constructing urban/rural classifications for parliamentary constituencies). The fun part - I used the help of GPT-4's "Code Assistant" extensively to get the visualisations done. Gen-AI, again, has truly revolutionised coding and product development. The #telcos faced #challenges in #whitelisting short URLs and since there was no specific requirement pertaining to short or redirect URLs in the initial #Trai #directive, they believed they should be #blocked. But that would hugely inconvenience #consumers, so the telcos developed a solution clearly establishing the relationship between the principal entity (PE) like banks etc with the short URLs whitelisted by such entities.
