I understand, and have also been the culprit of, the pressures of driving MAUs via push campaigns but at some point- we as marketers need to draw a line. Marketing 7.5L INR (9k USD) as something to "fulfill desires" especially to folks who might not understand the issues of being burdened by additional debt is unfair (I would like to use a different word here- but I won't). In case you think I am taking it too seriously, Debt via such instruments has picked up by 28% (2023 vs 2022) out of which 40% was driven by folks under 30. Household savings are at a 50-year low. Delinquency rates for credit cards rose by 2.9% in June 2023. Maybe instead of pushing them as "desires" we could talk about loans as the last option to help fulfill some urgent tasks/needs. Just some food for thought.

Zomato recently announced their acquisition of Paytm's entertainment ticketing business. How does one make such strategic choices? ❓ The first question in strategy is "where do we play?". ❇ In this case Zomato is exploring the space of "going-out" business. ❓The next question in strategy is "why do you want to play here?" ❇ The first reason is they want to expand their share of consumer wallet spend unlocking new growth avenues. ❇ Given they want to expand their share of wallet, there are many places they could get their share of wallet from - health & wellness, fuel, services & utilities etc. ❓Which then brings us to the third question in strategy "What are Zomato's strengths and where is the adjacency most natural?" ❇ There are multiple dimensions on which we can evaluate Zomato's strength. 👉 Zomato's core audience profile, the power users and therefore where do they most likely spend money. 👉 Zomato's infrastructure which consists of delivery fleet, network of restaurants, network of dark stores. 👉 Zomato's brand which stands for customer centricity, great user experience etc So given these aspects certain businesses lines don't fit in naturally, say for e.g fuel, education etc. It narrows down to a smaller subset - shopping, travel, movies&events, health & wellness, medicines etc. Given these choices, Zomato could have considered say medicine delivery, which leverages its infrastructure, warehouses etc with a deeper integrated play. Instead I hypothesise Zomato's lens for picking new playgrounds is focussing on what their core TG aspires to spend on and placing a bet on the growing population size of such a TG which is also more premium. That narrows down the focus to categories like shopping, travel, movies etc. ❓Which brings us to the next question, "What is the sequence of prioritisation & how to win?" Here looking at some macro trends help. ❇ According to a razorpay report on how India spends its money in FY23-24, AirTravel saw a 2.4x spike whereas movie tickets saw a 2.7x spike. For the sake of simplicity let's assume a choice was to be made between AirTravel and Movie Tickets ❇ Dimensions of evaluation can be frequency of event, margin structures, complexity of supply, competitive landscape et all. ❇ Airtravel could be anywhere between once a quarter to once a year. Whereas movies could be anywhere between once a week to once a month. ❇ Airtravel has more competition from makemytrip, cleartrip, ease mytrip et all whilst in the movie ticketing space BookMyShow has a ~55% marketshare and PayTM insider has ~45% marketshare. Purely from a frequency stand point, movie & entertainment tickets make for a better bet. Now Zomato has the option to either build this by themselves or buy. 🚀🛑Zomato Bold Move: Acquiring Paytm's Ticketing Biz for ₹2,048 Crore to Dominate the Entertainment Sector. 🚀🛑🚀🛑 Zomato is set to make a strategic move by acquiring Paytm's entertainment and ticketing business for ₹2,048.4 crore (around $244 million). This acquisition aligns with Zomato's ambition to expand its footprint in the "going-out" sector. Facing its own set of challenges, Paytm has chosen to sharpen its focus on core financial services. The boards of both companies gave the green light for this cash transaction on August 21. Under this agreement, One 97 Communications will shift its movie ticketing operations to its subsidiary OTPL and its sports and events ticketing business to another subsidiary, WEPL, through a slump sale.Since 2017, Paytm has been a key competitor to BookMyShow. However, with this deal, Zomato will take over Paytm's market share by acquiring the 'TicketNew' platform, known for movie ticket sales, and the 'Insider' platform, which handles tickets for live events.Paytm had initially developed its movie ticketing segment in-house and later expanded by acquiring Insider and TicketNew for ₹2.68 billion between 2017 and 2018. Now, Zomato plans to acquire the entire stake in OTPL and WEPL through a share purchase agreement, making these companies wholly-owned subsidiaries of Zomato.Additionally, Zomato will inject funds into OTPL and WEPL via a preferential allotment, equivalent to the slump sale consideration, which will be utilized to settle the amount owed to One 97 Communications. I was unaware about Shopsy social commerce platform until this year when a reseller told me about it. Shopsy was launched by Flipkart in 2021. It quickly became a key player in targeting price sensitive shoppers, especially in Tier 2 and 3 cities. Why? It’s a zero-commission model, similar to Meesho. In 2022, it crossed 100 million users ahead of its target timeline. 40% of Flipkart’s new customers by 2024. Proved to be a master stroke by Flipkart back then. While, Meesho is growing even faster, with a 32% user base jump and a 54% revenue surge. As social commerce landscape is on rise, the focus of Shopsy remains on affordability and local sellers to catch up with the momentum of Meesho. I’ve my fair share of learnings of both platforms. In all decently big D2C e-commerce brands, mostly there are dedicated resources chasing conversion numbers on website, e-commerce, quick commerce and/or offline retail. While there is a growth head who is actually responsible to drive growth across all sales channels, the person handling D2C website is normally the one taking accountability of online advertising spends. However it’s the same person who suffers the maximum with every penny spent in digital. Fortunately or unfortunately, the spends done in digital advertising helps building brand salience across all channels and most of the conversion benefit driven by digital advertising is capitalised by market places and quick commerce followed by offline and D2C website. This happens because of the website simply becomes a place of discovery for any customer while he/she uses more delivery friendly sales channels (such as Amazon, blinkit etc) for final purchase. This website guy gets bigger sales target every year but every penny it spends in digital doesn’t ensure purchase on website because of no clear reason why a person would buy it from website and not from other convenient sales channels. I handled total of 200 crore media spends on Meta ads in the last 8 years and here are my top learnings - 1. Campaign structure is super important. Create TOF, MOF, BOF campaign structure but don't keep copy, creatives all same in all 3 campaign funnels. This is where most people go wrong. I see 90% of acqusition and re-targeting campaign creatives and copy are same. Which means massive overlap. Go check your ad frequency today to get a reality check. 2. Add emojis to your headlines and primary text. Test it out. Improves the CTR. Adds some character and not make you sound like a robot. 3. Get an influencer and shoot a video that looks like a UGC video, it will convert better than your high budget videos. Infact, higher your product budget - higher your CAC. 4. Performance Marketing is 30% strategy and ad ops + 40% creatives and copywriting + 10% data analysis + 20% conversion rate optimization 5. Run correlation on multiple variables to find out what is the user's 'Aha moment' event that triggers a purchase behaviour. 6. Never look at overall preset data points that dashboard shows you, look at data points funnel by funnel - landing page to product page view, product page view to add to cart, add to cart to purchase etc. Every funnel against every channel will tell you a different story and will suggest you a true picture. 7. If you are making video ads, first 3 sec hooks are most important than the overall body script. Here is the mental model - Ask yourself - Did you spend atleast 70% of time in writting hook?
