Exploring the Surge in Demand for Physical Cash in Digital India As we embrace the Digital India initiative, with its significant rise in UPI transactions and other digital payment methods, one would expect a corresponding decline in the need for physical cash. Yet, the reality presents a paradox. Despite the fanfare surrounding the launch of digital cash a few months ago, the demand for physical currency continues to soar. In just the last four months, the amount of physical cash in circulation has surged from ₹33.5 lakh crore to ₹35.3 lakh crore—an increase of ₹1.8 lakh crore (approximately 5%). In contrast, the uptake of digital cash has seen a rise from ₹109.1 crore to ₹263.2 crore—a notable growth, but minuscule in comparison. Interestingly, the demand for ₹200 denomination notes has spiked dramatically, marking the highest growth at 1.13 times, followed by ₹100, ₹50, and ₹500 notes in terms of value. However, the ₹10 denomination notes have seen a decrease in demand. Among coins, the ₹20 and ₹10 denominations are increasingly sought after. On the digital front, e₹500 and e₹2 denominations, along with e₹100, have experienced significant upticks, suggesting a nuanced shift in consumer preferences. Why, in an increasingly digital economy, does the need for physical cash persist at such high rates? 𝐓𝐄𝐂 - 𝐓𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫 under the aegis of India Department of Telecommunications ( DOT ) is organizing a Workshop on 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐓𝐫𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐂𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫 (𝐍𝐓𝐂) for #IoT/ #M2M #Device manufacturers, #Serviceproviders, #Platform providers and #Telecom service providers. The workshop is being organized to deliberate with concerned stakeholders on various aspects of development and implementation of NTC and is scheduled on 15th May 2024 at 10:30 AM at Sanchar complex, WMS compound, 5th Block Jayanagar, Bengaluru India has established a National Trust Center (NTC) which serves as a platform where certified IoT devices are registered, and where any discovered #vulnerabilities can be reported and addressed. 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐥 𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐭 (#NSCS) directed the telecom department to set up a facility for testing #IoTdevice and equipment and Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT) has been tasked to set up a state-owned centre to enable NTC. The initiative, being rolled out, has a nearly INR 70-crore outlay. The regulators also point out the fact that the certified devices may also become vulnerable after deployment due to new vulnerabilities being discovered. To address such issues, they propose a central mechanism like a National Trust Center(NTC), which will ensure the #registration of certified devices, enabling users and #networks to distinguish the good from the potentially rogue ones. The repository may also be used to record vulnerabilities discovered in the #certified devices to provide a mechanism of continuous improvement in the #safety and #security of the devices and the network. IoT Security Foundation Bangalore Chapter is actively endorsing this initiative and contributing its insights to ensure future-proofing aligned with emerging standards and regulations.
