NEW SILICON PARETO CURVE, EVP: I've debated this problem for a while, and many people have looked at replacing the infamous PPA Pareto curve. I have played with adding interconnects (including the pins) into the equation and 4-letter and 5-letter replacements. After playing with several alternatives, I think EVP is probably the most effortless future transition and more straightforward to pronounce than the alternatives. First-pass justifications: - ENERGY, E: because our community should care not only about Performance but the "cost" of Performance, i.e., energy-in and the heat-out. Power really does not show the cost. Yes, time is a function of Performance, but it is also a function of cost. I am concerned that the industry has lost its Moral Imperative on efficiency. Reduction of logic or geometry shrinkage are minor factors in the efficiency game and not very useful ones. - VOLUME, V: yes, we will be going to physical 3D silicon, no longer caring about 2D floorplans (very 70s). We will choose computational cubes over pancakes. We will care more about making 3D circuits cool enough to drive future computational cubes that avoid thermal nuclear meltdowns. - PERFORMANCE, P: does not change. Performance is the metric for a satisfied consumer. Again, linked to Energy, but how much is too much? How close can we push modern computing world towards the Margolus-Levitin limit with the available Energy without destroying the worlds resources in the process. #vairecomputing #PPA #EVP #Physics #nearzeroenergycomputing #future #semiconductor

very good intro to CAN bus, and handwritten at that when I worked for Silicon Labs we had several hand written technical documents, those were the best; not because they were handwritten but because there is something about writing in hand: focus is different, there is more freedom than typing and mind engages in content rather than format (and format is much more fluid)

#India #Smartphone Shipments Fall 2% YoY in April-June Quarter, Record Highest Ever Q2 Value 💡 India’s smartphone shipments fell 2% YoY in Q2 2024 (April-June), according to Counterpoint’s Monthly India Smartphone Tracker. The decline was influenced by a #heatwave, a #seasonal slump, and slower demand from Q1 2024. In response, OEMs hosted sales events in Q2 to clear #inventory, leading to a reduced sell-in and a period of degrowth. Commenting on the market’s volume dynamics, Senior Research Analyst Shilpi Jain said, “Heatwave conditions in various regions led to lower footfalls in offline channels and delayed smartphone purchases as consumers prioritized appliances like air conditioners and refrigerators. This reduced demand caused an inventory build-up. However, summer sales at online channels, good harvest and aggressive promotions towards the end of the quarter provided relief to OEMs, helping close the quarter on a better note than at the beginning. During the quarter, Xiaomi Technology reclaimed the top spot with a 23% YoY growth in its shipments, driven by a streamlined and focused portfolio that spans from the entry-level to affordable premium segments. To further solidify its position, the company employed a strategy to push flagship handsets, improve marketing and expand distribution channels.” Thanks again to Counterpoint Research for the full article with more background and insights via the link below 💡🙏👇 https://lnkd.in/eht2RDeR #semiconductorindustry #semiconductors #semiconductor #technology #tech #consumermelectronics #geopolitics #mobile #phones #chips #ic

#Samsung Starts Mass Production of 9th Generation V-NAND: 1Tb 3D TLC NAND 💡 Samsung Electronics has started mass production of its 9th generation of V-NAND #memory. The first dies based on their latest #NAND #tech come in a 1 Tb capacity using a triple-level cell (TLC) architecture, with #data transfer rates as high as 3.2 GT/s. The new 3D TLC NAND memory will initially be used to build high-capacity and high-performance #SSDs, which will help to solidify Samsung's position in the storage market. Diving right in, Samsung is conspicuously avoiding to list the number of layers in their latest generation NAND, which is the principle driving factor in increasing capacity generation-on-generation. The company's current 8th gen V-NAND is 236 layers – similar to its major competitors – and word on the street is that 9th gen V-NAND ups that to 290 layers, though this remains to be confirmed. #AI and high performance computing demands have revolutionized the silicon, leading to a race to create the most massive and fastest designs achievable. At Baya Systems, we are witnessing the emergence of multi PB/s bi-section bandwidth within package, surpassing wire bandwidth growth physics. Outdated legacy communication solutions result in excessive power and area (x++% power, area for x% perf gain). This is unsustainable and calls for a transformation in on- and inter-chiplet communication and optimization strategies. In the race of high performance computing and AI silicon development, prioritizing #chiplet and on-chip communication for multi PB/s bandwidth is not only critical to win but just to stay in the game.
