I come from a Layoff Batch 😞 (Tier-3 College) I didn’t receive a PPO from Amazon. I had to work a 10 AM to 7 PM shift 😬 (not counting the commute time) But despite that I never gave up. “My worst technical interview experience” . While trying to switch, I interviewed at Coinbase for the role of SDE 2. Now, let me clarify, the issue wasn’t with Coinbase—it was my incorrect expectations and irrelevant preparation. I assumed it would be a standard DSA round, but it was a Q coding round. I didn’t clarify with the recruiter and wasted time optimizing a straightforward problem. Today I gave an Online Assessment of Intuit for the role of Software Engineer I. This was an internal opening and I got a referral luckily. I was able to successfully solve 3/5 questions in 1.5 hours, and maybe I would have solved 1 more question if got only a few minutes more. But the reason why I am posting this today because I got disheartened after knowing that Solutions were being sold during the time of the Assessment on various social media platforms like telegram. Yesterday my friend who also got a referral told me that someone approached him on telegram asking him whether he needed help in the OA, obviously asking him money for helping. I am a 2024 pass-out from a Tier-3 and I have been continuously practicing Leetcode, GFG, Codeforces since almost 3 years. I may not be an expert in Coding but it hurts more when people cheat on Online Assessments and the deserving people won't even get a chance for an interview of dream companies. By saying this I am not saying that I am deserving but there must be some deserving people out there whose chance to get an interview was snatched from him/her by a cheater. The problems faced by students of Tier-3 colleges are: - we don't get referrals - if somehow got a referral, our resume don't get shortlisted because of our college tier. - after all this hurdles there are cheaters all around who cheat in Online Assessments. Finishing my thoughts I would just say I am not going to give up and I will still practice everyday in a hope that I would crack a dream company someday. I wanted to share some unpopular opinions about layoffs and restructuring in organisations, especially in software. After Intuit announced their round of layoffs, there has been some confusion, freshers are panic again, and I've heard these opinions from some of the best developers and leaders in the software domain which might help you too. I wish to share them so you can also have this perspective in mind. 1. Cracking interviews is different from sustaining in an organization: Freshers, especially, are more focused on cracking interviews than on sustaining their positions. When a friend shared this with me, I felt this is something many don't realize about the software industry. Often, what you are asked in an interview is different from the actual work you will be doing. Embracing a love for technology and working towards the organization's goals is more important than just cracking interviews. 2. Your pay package comes with expectations: Many of us look at the cool packages and perks companies offer and assume that life inside is a fantasy. We often forget to highlight the hard work and responsibility required. If your package is high and you are not meeting expectations, it's likely that you will be out sooner or later. So, if an organization offers you a high package, it's time to celebrate but also to look at the responsibilities and challenges you should be tackling. 3. A right leader must know where to invest: Yes, people are important, but if one department is doing well in business and another is not or is on the verge of failing, it is crucial for a leader to make tough decisions to keep the organization running smoothly. Considering these facts would be a great addition to your software career. Yes, I do agree that what Intuit did in panic is not praiseworthy. Better communication, informing employees about their performance, and giving them a chance to improve would have been a better way to handle the situation. Again i haven't been in the leadership team shoes to comment on this. Just letting you all know my thoughts on how to take this up positively and learn from this. My L4 SWE Google interview experience 1️⃣ The Referral I had sought a referral from a friend at Google to apply for L4 roles. 2️⃣ Recruiter Reachout The recruiter reached out after 2-3 weeks. I asked for 5 weeks to prepare. As I had cleared their interview in 2022 for L3, my phone screen round was skipped and I was directly moved to the onsite rounds. 3️⃣ 3 Coding Rounds and 1 Googlyness Round All interviews were precisely 45-minute rounds. 🎢 The onsite interviews: 1️⃣ Round 1 The interviewer asked a tree-based problem with 3 follow-ups. All solutions had to be coded with no bugs. Concepts involved were trees, bfs, dfs and merge sort. 2️⃣ Round 2 2 Coding questions were asked. The first question was based on DSU and the second on bfs/dfs. This was the best interview among all the rounds. 3️⃣ Round 3 2 Coding questions were asked. Concepts involved were binary search, bfs/dfs and priority queues. The interviewer was very particular about the code quality. 4️⃣ Googlyness Round The interviewer was candid but asked a lot of challenging questions about my work experiences. I tried to align my answers with Google's values as much as possible. 🎯 Result: I was informed that the interview feedback was positive but team matching took several months. I talked to around 6 teams before matching to one of them. I received the offer after a round of negotiations within 2 weeks. Overall, Google's interview problems were original and challenging, but not extremely difficult. If you have a good grasp of the basics and code regularly, you should be able to clear the loop. However, as my 2nd interview pointed out, nothing is off limits. You are expected to know all basic data structures and algorithms really well. 📚 Few tips for successful interviews with Google: - Make sure you clarify the constraints of the problem clearly before you start solving. L4 interview questions tend to be open-ended. - Try to arrive at the most optimal solution quickly. Don't beat around the bush. - Discuss your approach clearly with the interviewer. - Prepare well for behavioral interviews. It is fine to pause and think your answer through in behavioral interviews. Shaw), recently posted something about WLB, I commnted something on his post but he has blocked me or deleted his post but I'm unable to view his post/profile now. Pratik Dey, you tagged me in a comment in that thread, unfortunately he has blocked me after that, so, I'm unable to help him but hope someone helps him to get well soon, he needs support, mental and career wise. Meanwhile, I'm using my LinkedIn account since last 6-8 years+ now and I expected something like this, hence took a screenshot in advance 🙂 We as Techies do what non-techies can't do, that's why we get paid more, even a toilet cleaner does hardwork but he/she does not get paid well, my purpose is not to insult them, but to tell, we get paid for doing mental work, typing code is just small part, but real processing happens inside our brains - these lines are because he told we can ignore WLB bcoz it's just typing work, something like that, in his deleted post. I'll give few examples of WLB 👇 1. When you log out, you don't look at your laptop until you want, in case of urgency, whoever is working at that time in different country or timezone etc., they need to call or reach out seperately, in case of production issue as such, ONLY, not always, logged out means logged out, ping me next day. 2. When you take planned leaves, does not matter why you take it, whether for rest or for having fun while watching movie or working on personal project, does not matter, it's planned paid leave, your wish, it's paid and planned in advance. 3. You have hobby outside job, family and friends, being_human. 4. You support your teammates and they do the same when needed, it's about teamwork, not a freelancer stuff, that's why we have sprint planing and all such stuff so that things happen in proper process. These days, I put most of my salary in FD or investments etc. but real fun is when I can go for movies, my code runs in production being used by customers, I can book flight tickets for parents without thinking about price, I play TT with friends in office during break time - I think I'm a human and yes ..... I am and that's the real meaning of WLB for me, whether I have 1 YOE or 20 YOE, WLB can be maintained with hardwork, let's be clear about it.... #WLB_Real_Meaning #Connections

Between JioCinema, Amazon Prime, Disney+ Hotstar and Netflix, I think Netflix has the best UI/UX. Whenever I want to watch something, I first go to Netflix over other platforms, for the same reason. The recommendations feel better. It's easy to find recent movies and series and overall the screen feels cleaner, minimal and without many distractions and clutter. Prime video feels like some fish market (for the lack of a better word to describe all the clumsyness 🥲) with everything noisy and scattered. It's hard to navigate. Hotstar doesn't have much going on the content front. My only use case for Jio Cinema for now is IPL and even that UX has too much clutter on the screen. Between many consumer products, I notice UX being the driving factor over features. Similarly, I prefer Groww over Zerodha as my primary investments account because I find their UI/UX better. For any B2C product, never ignore the UI/UX aspect. It can be the most sophisticated usecase and the best in performance but without a nice UX, people will prefer a competitor. Most applications do not provide client side feature toggles to disable UI/UX that we don't want as they want to show as much options as possible but that exact behaviour actually reduces the loyalty and long term customer value, especially within the top spenders of the country. CAT exam has seen 30% more registrations this year, 3.3 Lakh applicants for CAT in 2023, whereas in 2022 it was just 2.55 Lakh. The tech fresher job market has been hard hit by recession and the number of job cuts , there are multiple scenarios : - Wipro and Infosys - No Campus Hiring this year. Large chunk of students who earlier got placed in service based companies and were satisfied are still in the job market. - Reduced PPOs and Hiring numbers by Big Tech : This has been the trend this year and the hiring numbers are significantly lesser. - Startups are getting cheap talent and no funding season : This also has worsen the situation. Last week, a position opened up for SDE-1. Here are some common mistakes which people did in their resume: - no surname - email or phone not present, in some cases, both were not present (imagine how can I refer you)? - name, email, phone not copyable from resume (literally the buggest bummer after I commit someone to refer) - seniors or undergrads applying for position open exclusively for 2024 graduates, this is not going to work, we are wasting yours, mine and recruiter's time - not sending resume and job link in one message (this is highly unprofessional, you cannot expect the referrer to do the weight lifting for you and find the relevant job link) Just to give you an idea of how smart people are while asking for referrals: People have gone to this extent where they have aced all above points but also sent me a note in third person stating why they are a good fit for Uber. The level of preparation for referral is next level. Please act on all these points and then ask for referrals. Also, there were couple of folks who asked for referrals but I could not refer them because the position got closed earlier than expected. PS: I am sure the referrer is dying to refer a good candidate for two good reasons: 1. to work with smart people 2. for referral bonus This is just a feedback, take it with positivity.

How to Increase Salary from 25LPA to 2.5CR . . . This is the exact question I got in my recent 1:1. Guess what my answer was? My first reaction was, "Bhai? Are you joking or serious?" He said he was very serious and wanted to increase his salary to 10X. I didn't know what to say. I asked about his experience, and he replied with 5 years. Then, I asked by what year he wanted to reach that level, and he said in his next switch in 5-6 months. Now, I didn't know what to say. I asked if he was planning to work outside of India. He replied no, he wanted to work in India and with companies that can provide WFH. Now I have told him about my years of experience at Atlassian and my current role and asked him to guess my years of experience. He said may be around 3-4 CR. At this moment, I didn't even know what follow-up question to ask or how to proceed with the conversation. First, I was blank. Then, I raised my voice and said, "Are you joking?" and he explained one thing that opened my eyes. He said no, I have seen many people posting about Atlassian giving 86 LPA for freshers and also many YouTubers claiming that increasing your salary to 10X and getting crores in 5 years of experience is possible. I checked your profile and you're in one of the top high-paying companies. So, I connected with you to help in reaching that salary. Now I completely realize how social media and the hype on salaries are misleading people with fake expectations, and people believe this is true even for those who have been in the industry for so long. He is not the first person to reach out. I have received many pings about salary from freshers, and surprisingly, now I am also receiving them from experienced folks. People who are reading this post, please don't blindly trust influencers or YouTubers when it comes to salary hype. People should understand the reality and check from various trusted sources to double confirm. And no, a DSA course will not take you to land crores of packages and stop believing every influencer. Also, don't forget to appreciate what you have achieved. If a person is earning 12LPA in India, he/she is in the top 0.5%. One can always aim for more, but during this process, don't forget your journey and your achievements. Zomato Zomato India Deepinder Goyal Zomato has delivered orders to my address multiple times in the past, but recently, they failed to deliver my order and then canceled it. I had placed the order at night when I was hungry, and this is not the first time such an issue has occurred.
