Caritas India has launched Global Programme’s balanced diet campaign in schools to tackle some of Odisha’s highest malnourishment rates among young children. Among the tribal-dominated districts, 39.8 per cent of children under five years are suffering from malnutrition in Rayagada. The percentage increase has also been seen in severely wasted cases among children under the age of five. It's heartening to witness a growing number of nonprofits exploring the Social Stock Exchange (SSE) as a transformative means of raising capital. In a space where securing funding is a constant challenge for many NGOs, this move marks a significant step towards sustainability and impact. The potential of SSEs to revolutionise fundraising for NGOs cannot be overstated. By providing access to a broader investor base, SSEs offer a promising alternative to the traditional avenues of fundraising. Indeed, SSEs serve as a catalyst for change by diversifying funding sources, thereby reducing the reliance on unpredictable contributions. This financial stability enables NGOs to focus more on their core missions and less on financial uncertainties. Moreover, with access to capital markets facilitated by SSEs, NGOs can expand their operations and extend their reach to more beneficiaries. This scalability enhances their ability to create lasting social change on a larger scale. Yet, despite the immense potential SSEs hold, many NGOs remain hesitant to explore this avenue. Whether due to apprehensions about the unknown or a lack of understanding about SSE operations, overcoming these barriers is crucial to unlocking the full potential of this innovative funding mechanism. The recent elections in *Gujarat's tribal belt* have once again brought attention to the enduring difficulties faced by marginalized tribal communities nationwide. Despite their significance, these areas continue to lack essential development, with issues like water scarcity, unemployment, and inadequate infrastructure persisting. With *over 120 million* people living in tribal areas, the demand for a decent standard of living remains unmet, even after decades of independence. Even in developed states like Gujarat, tribal populations struggle with longstanding, unresolved problems. Speaking at a NewsX show Sandeep Chachra, Executive Director, ActionAid Association warned that it is easy for us in the middle classes to fix blame of pollution on farmers and workers. He goes on to underline the need to look at the complex range of issues involved. Studies show that pollution in Delhi is caused by many factors and vehicular traffic is a major issue causing 35% of the suspended particulate matter (SPM), parali or crop residue burning makes up 6-8% across the year, and in the winter months rises to some 25%. Having evidenced-based action means we need to act on all fronts to stop air pollution in our cities in North India.

Women are the bedrock of socio-economic life of the tribal communities in Jharkhand. They are the primary caretakers of their families, deeply involved in agriculture, forest management, and the preservation of cultural heritage. Their role is integral, yet their contributions are often underappreciated and their rights are severely limited. Despite being the backbone of tribal society, these women face systemic challenges rooted in traditional laws and customs. The Chotanagpur Tenancy (CNT) Act, for instance, was established to safeguard tribal land from external exploitation. However, it also inadvertently perpetuates gender inequality by excluding women from inheriting paternal property. This exclusion denies them access to one of the most critical assets—land, which is essential for economic security and empowerment in rural Jharkhand. This legal barrier has far-reaching consequences. Without property rights, tribal women are left with little control over land and resources, which in turn limits their influence in both household and community decision-making processes. Their economic dependence is heightened, making them more vulnerable to poverty, domestic violence, and social marginalization. This not only stifles their potential for economic growth but also perpetuates a cycle of poverty within their communities. Despite these challenges, tribal women continue to demonstrate remarkable resilience. They sustain their families, contribute significantly to the local economy, and are the custodians of their rich cultural heritage. Their role in maintaining the delicate balance between nature and livelihood is indispensable. Understanding these dynamics is crucial for anyone interested in the socio-economic development of tribal areas. Addressing the inequities faced by tribal women requires a multi-faceted approach, including legal reforms, community education, and economic empowerment initiatives. By advocating for the revision of inheritance laws and promoting gender equality, we can help ensure that these women receive the rights and recognition they deserve. Empowering tribal women is not only a matter of justice but also a key to sustainable development in Jharkhand. The ST and SC Development Department Government of Odisha under commission-cum-secretary roopa sahoo has been proactively taking measures to preserve and protect #SacredGroves of tribal communities in Odisha. Sacred groves are an age-old tradition where a fragment of forest or water body is dedicated to local #deities and nobody is allowed to cut plants or kill animals. Sacred groves are found across India. In Odisha, where 22.85 percent of the population belongs to indigenous communities, these groves play an even more vital role in uniting them, shaping their day-to-day life, and defining #tribalculture, #tradition, and #belief systems. In last one year, around 11000 sacred groves have been revamped through Special Development Councils (SDCs) across the state. Here's an article about the #SacredGroves published in the 30 Stades. Comprehensive Sexual Health Curriculum in India cannot be overstated. Presenting some facts check from the data available from government bodies : ⭕ According to the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5) 2019-21, 7.9% of women aged 15-19 were already mothers or pregnant at the time of the survey. ⭕While awareness has increased, misconceptions and lack of knowledge about HIV/AIDS remain prevalent. The same survey indicated that only 41% of young women and 50% of young men had comprehensive knowledge about HIV/AIDS. ⭕Menstrual health is still a taboo subject in many parts of India. A study by WaterAid and UNICEF found that 71% of girls in India have no knowledge of menstruation before their first period. ⭕India has high rates of sexual violence, with the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) reporting over 32,000 cases of rape in 2020 and these cases are increasing rapidly in the country. Sexual health education in India has been inconsistent and often met with resistance due to cultural, religious, and societal norms. Implementing a comprehensive sexual health curriculum is essential to address the myriad challenges related to sexual health and rights, especially in a diverse and populous country like India. #community #updates #importance #communicate

The story of a village in West Bengal, looks like any other village in India, depicting a poor, hand-to-mouth situation, and a growing feeling of hopelessness in the community. A community with small land holdings, some linked with SHGs, some not, has been growing only one cash crop, because of lack of arable water during summer. Located in North Sundarban, this village has enough salty backwater, but the rain-filled arable water ponds, do not sustain long. Men are engaged in farming, and women are engaged in cattle and poultry rearing, backyard vegetable gardens, and other activities. 475 households in 5 Paras, with a population of 2850,now face a fast growing problem of labour Migration, in the race to earn more money, to cover inflation and failing crops, due to climate change. AHEAD Initiatives and their Partner CSO have done commendable work to promote backyard vegetable gardening, organic farming, seed conservation, reviving astonishing local varieties of rice, and forming open learning centres, but were struggling to create sustainable livelihoods. A 3-day GLIDE Workshop organised for the village, from 18-20 October, helped the 30 Participants, design 11 Group Livelihoods for themselves, and take back detailed Business Plans for the same. A visit to the participants of the GLIDE workshop (conducted in September), came in as a pleasant surprise, with 6 Group livelihoods started, and one already sailing on cloud nine, with an unexpected profit from the Dussehra Mela. We will share a detailed picture of all the Group livelihoods emerging from the series of 9 workshops (for AHEAD Initiatives), after December 2024.
