🐝 Project Shakti: Empowering Rural Women Through Beekeeping Since 2005, Project Shakti has been a beacon of hope for Scheduled Caste women in the Udham Nagar District of Uttarakhand. This initiative aims to break the chains of gender and caste prejudice, empowering women through the timeless art of beekeeping. A Path to Empowerment For these women, beekeeping is more than just a livelihood—it's a gateway to status, self-confidence, and economic independence. Through Schumacher Society's guidance, they've learned the intricate techniques of honey making, transforming their lives in profound ways. From Doubt to Determination Many of these women had never ventured beyond the confines of family and household duties. But with beekeeping, they've discovered newfound purpose and possibility. As they tend to their hives, they nurture not just bees, but their own dreams of a better future. Strength in Unity Project Shakti doesn't just provide skills—it fosters community and collaboration. By forming self-help groups (SHGs), women are empowered to support each other and collectively grow their beekeeping endeavors. Together, they've proven that solidarity is the key to success. From Local Success to National Recognition The impact of Project Shakti extends far beyond its 12 target villages. The success of these women beekeepers has caught the attention of the Government of India's Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC). In a remarkable turn of events, a member of an SHG has now become a trainer, sharing her expertise with KVIC members. Today, on the International Day of Rural Women, we at SAK Foundation celebrate the strength, resilience, and contributions of women in rural communities. Acknowledging the essential role they play in agriculture, household management, and community development, yet failing to receive the due credit. The significant barriers faced by them to access quality education, healthcare, and economic opportunities is today's reality that needs a collective attention. Adivasi Single Women’s Snehmilan (Get-together) “Shakti, Centre for Human Rights and Peoples’ Empowerment,” operating across 10 talukas in the districts of Surat, Tapi, and Navsari, actively works towards the dignity and development of indigenous communities. In the year 2021, a dialogue was initiated with Single Women, addressing issues related to domestic violence, exploitation, and human rights. Following this dialogue, in 2022, several interventions were initiated with the Single Women. A baseline survey conducted in 245 villages of eight blocks of the three districts in South Gujarat identified 15,000 Single Women, which includes widows, separated, and divorced women, and unmarried women aged 40 and above. A more in-depth needs assessment was undertaken to know and address social, economic, educational, and health needs of the Single Women. Many Single Women were found without homes, property rights, and basic amenities such as water, sanitation, and electricity. A large number of Single Women lacked entitlement documents like Aadhaar cards, voter IDs, ration cards, and health cards. Some widows lacked proof of their husbands' deaths, and many were not availing the widow and old age pensions. Due to financial constraints, their children faced challenges in education, and they continue their struggles. For a healthy society, vulnerable Single Women must be helped to live a life of dignity. Towards this aim, the organization is making several interventions to provide a platform and support to the Single Women. The Single Women’s Snehmilan (gathering) is organized on March 11, 2024, at Shakti, Songadh. It is expected that around 5000 Single Women from 10 talukas will participate in the event. It is an event to provide them a platform to express their solidarity and demand their rights. The event is organized with the help of people's contributions and support. In 2022, our efforts to grasp the comprehensive needs of women led us to engage with Mahilla Mandals and Anganwadi centers. Anganwadi Centers, deeply embedded within communities, are pivotal hubs fostering trust among women and girls, especially among the most marginalized. The centers provide crucial services such as supplementary nutrition and support for lactating and pregnant mothers. Regular engagement fosters solidarity networks among women. Employing a participatory approach, we delved into their daily lives, integrating fresh insights to inform decisions. This method laid the groundwork for generating well-informed policy recommendations and facilitating project implementation.

Happy International Women’s Day! Globally over one billion persons with disabilities are disproportionately at risk from the negative effects of the climate crisis. Yet there is a notable absence of climate policy, programming, and research at the intersection of disability and climate change. Advancing climate justice urgently requires accelerated disability-inclusive rights-based climate research and action. In continuation of its research Shanta Memorial Rehabilitation Center initiated a project on the ground in Kendrapada (Odisha) called Adaptation, Research Alliance on drawing up an adaptation inventory for disabled women displaced from Satabhaya (in Odisha, India). The ARA project makes an attempt to find out what we’re the experiences of disabled women and girls. How did they adapt to the new location? Women from Kendrapada participated in the Roundtable Discussion on January 9th, 2024 “Climate Change: Developing an Adaptation Inventory for Persons with Disabilities “ (Specifically Gendered). By honing their stitching skills, these women are not only acquiring a valuable trade but also gaining the confidence to navigate the competitive job market. The project's focus on holistic development ensures that these women are not just skilled technicians but also well-rounded individuals with the necessary life skills and awareness to thrive in a dynamic environment. Project Kaushalyam also fosters a supportive community where women can learn from each other, share experiences, and build a network of support. Predominantly done by women, tea plucking is a physically demanding task. Many tea fields in Sri Lanka lacked proper toilet facilities, forcing women to either relieve themselves in the fields or wait until they returned home. Sometimes, they go home by noon or miss work, especially during menstruation, which leads to lost wages and more financial issues. Kannikadevi, the Vice President of her estate Community Development Forums (CDFs) and a tea plucker with 18 years of experience, shares, “If a woman goes home to use the toilet, she hardly comes back to work even [though] she knows that she loses half a day’s pay.  This is because of the tiresome back-and-forth walk and the non-availability of a latrine and water in the working area. After the construction of these field toilets, we feel that we are being treated with the respect and dignity that we had been aspiring for.” Women represented in leadership positions in the CDF rose to 58%, from the typical 9-10% in CBOs, and enabled them to take on leadership eagerly. Thereby, she advocated for the construction of toilets, a feat made possible by including women in decision-making roles within the community. More importantly, they also show their communities that women are competent and influential leaders when given a platform to drive change. Since the establishment of CDFs, 462 issues have been raised, with 81% resolved amicably between 2018-2023.
