They enable: 1. 🔄 Dynamic provisioning of Persistent Volumes (PVs) 2. 🚀 Automatic creation of PVs when needed 3. 🎛️ Different storage options for various use cases Sample YAML for Storage Class: apiVersion: storage.k8s.io/v1 kind: StorageClass metadata: name: standard provisioner: kubernetes.io/aws-ebs parameters: type: gp2 Explanation of the YAML: - 📜 apiVersion and kind: Specify this is a StorageClass resource - 🏷️ metadata.name: Name of the StorageClass ("standard") - 🔧 provisioner: Defines who will provision the storage (AWS EBS in this case) - ⚙️ parameters: Specific options for the provisioner (gp2 type for AWS EBS) 🔍 What does "provisioner" mean? The provisioner is like a storage manager for Kubernetes. Following flags can be used with terraform apply command -auto-approve: Skips interactive approval of the plan before applying. This option is ignored when you pass a previously-saved plan file because Terraform considers you passing the plan file as the approval and so will never prompt in that case. -compact-warnings: This shows any warning messages in a compact form which includes only the summary messages unless the warnings are accompanied by at least one error and thus the warning text might be useful context for the errors. -input=false: Disables all of Terraform’s interactive prompts. Note that this also prevents Terraform from prompting for interactive approval of a plan, so Terraform will conservatively assume that you do not wish to apply the plan, causing the operation to fail. If you wish to run Terraform in a non-interactive context, see Running Terraform in Automation for some different approaches. -lock=false: Disables Terraform’s default behavior of attempting to take a read/write lock on the state for the duration of the operation. -lock-timeout=DURATION: Unless locking is disabled with -lock=false, instructs Terraform to retry acquiring a lock for a period of time before returning an error. A duration syntax is a number followed by a time unit letter, such as “3s” for three seconds. -no-color: Disables terminal formatting sequences in the output. Use this if you are running Terraform in a context where its output will be rendered by a system that cannot interpret terminal formatting. -parallelism=n: Limit the number of concurrent operations as Terraform walks the graph. Defaults to 10. For configurations using the local backend only, terraform apply also accepts the legacy options -state, -state-out, and -backup.

The coming weeks are are going to learn Terraform in 7.0 as it is one of the most common provisioning IAC in companies like Walmart Amazon Flipkart Atlassian etc. Terraform is a tool for building, changing, and versioning infrastructure safely and efficiently. Terraform can manage existing and popular service providers as well as custom in-house solutions. The key features of Terraform are: Infrastructure as Code: Infrastructure is described using a high-level configuration syntax. This allows a blueprint of your datacenter to be versioned and treated as you would any other code. Additionally, infrastructure can be shared and re-used. Execution Plans: Terraform has a "planning" step where it generates an execution plan. The execution plan shows what Terraform will do when you call apply. This lets you avoid any surprises when Terraform manipulates infrastructure. Resource Graph: Terraform builds a graph of all your resources, and parallelizes the creation and modification of any non-dependent resources. Because of this, Terraform builds infrastructure as efficiently as possible, and operators get insight into dependencies in their infrastructure. Change Automation: Complex changesets can be applied to your infrastructure with minimal human interaction. Successfully Configured Jenkins Master-Slave Architecture I recently completed a project where I set up a Jenkins Master-Slave Architecture on AWS EC2 instances, enabling distributed build execution and high availability for CI/CD pipelines. Here’s an overview of the steps involved: Master Node Setup: I launched a Jenkins master server on AWS EC2, installed Java 17 and Jenkins, and created automated build jobs. Slave Node Configuration: I set up a slave node on a separate EC2 instance, connected it to the master server, and configured job-specific labels for task distribution. Backup and Restore: I implemented a backup and restore strategy by archiving Jenkins data and storing it in AWS S3. The setup was restored on a new EC2 instance after simulating a failure. Key Challenge - Bringing an Offline Slave Node Online: When the slave node went offline during the restoration process, I used the following approach to bring it back online: Downloaded the agent.jar file using curl from the Jenkins master instance. Ran the Java command to connect the slave node back to the master server securely and resume job execution. This project significantly enhanced my skills in Jenkins configuration, cloud infrastructure, and DevOps automation. This experience strengthened my expertise in: ✅ Jenkins Master-Slave architecture ✅ AWS S3 for backup and recovery ✅ Distributed build execution and troubleshooting ✅ DevOps best practices Excited to apply these skills to new challenges and continue growing in the DevOps space! Here are some key takeaways: 🔹 Billing Accounts: Billing Accounts are essential for creating resources in a project and managing payments. You can associate multiple projects with a single billing account. Large organizations can create billing accounts for each department, while startups may only need one. Two types: Self-Serve (credit card/bank) and Invoiced (for enterprises). 🔹 Managing Billing: Set up budgets and alerts to avoid overspending. Configure alerts for 50%, 90%, and 100% thresholds. Export billing data to BigQuery or Cloud Storage for analysis and retention. 🔹 IAM Best Practices: Least Privilege: Always assign the minimum necessary permissions. Avoid basic roles; use predefined roles for better control. Regularly review Cloud Audit Logs and archive them in Cloud Storage for long-term retention. Utilize Service Accounts with minimal privileges, and assign separate service accounts for different purposes. 🔹 Identity Management: Federate Cloud Identity or Google Workspace with your enterprise IdP (e.g., Active Directory). Enable Single Sign-On (SSO) and leverage tools like Google Cloud Directory Sync (GCDS) for centralized management. The journey toward recertification is both challenging and rewarding.
