As we shift away from fossil fuels to safeguard our environment, it's crucial to also support the communities that depend on these sectors by facilitating transitions to new sources of livelihood. Under the auspices of UNDP, Arya.ag is at the forefront of a Just Transition initiative in Jharkhand’s coal-mining districts. Our pilot project aims to boost the capabilities of farmer-producer organizations and women collectives, focusing on the post-harvest processing, value addition, and marketing of millets—a key staple in the region. This initiative not only sets up millet processing facilities but also invests in human resource development and empowers rural women by equipping them with the necessary skills to run micro-enterprises. Given that over 70% of Jharkhand's population relies on agriculture and forestry, enhancing the millet value chain is a strategic approach to foster sustainable livelihoods, address climate impacts, and improve food and nutritional security in the region. Something to be disappointed on 2024 Environmental Performance Index (EPI), where India stands out of 180 countries - 1. 3rd largest emitter of GHG 2. 177th position on air quality and projected emissions due to heavy reliance on coal 3. 178th position on biodiversity due to restricted access to information database 4. On a brighter note, 133rd position on climate change due to significant investments in renewable energy and its ambitious goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070. 🌍 Hyderabad (17/10/2024) - Join Us for a Workshop on Compliance mechanism under the Indian Carbon Market! 🌍 For Industries and Accredited Carbon Verification Agencies. India is making strides towards global climate goals with its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC). To support these efforts, the government has introduced the Indian Carbon Market (ICM) framework, aimed at decarbonizing the economy through carbon credit trading. The Carbon Credit Trading Scheme, formalized in 2023, sets specific GHG Emission Intensity (GEI) targets for registered entities, allowing those who exceed these targets to earn Carbon Credit Certificates. To help stakeholders navigate the compliance mechanism, the Bureau of Energy Efficiency is organizing a series of capacity-building workshops across India. With an estimated investment of a whopping 55 billion USD, India's sanitation program, the Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) is one of the largest ever public-funded programs world wide. After a huge achievement in providing basic facilities like toilets, the mission is now addressing second generation sanitation issues like liquid waste management and solid waste management. For India to achieve Viksit Bharat (a developed country) status, it's imperative that the gains on the ground are sustained and all the 6.50 lakh villages are made Open Defecation Free (ODF+) Model Village. Innovation can play a pivotal role in this regard. A close look suggests that, launched almost at the same time, while Start Up India has witnessed the registration of 1,23,890 technologies, SBM's technology platform, ejalshakti has revealed the approval of just 47 sanitation technologies over the past nine years. The role of innovation and technology can't be further ignored in making India a strong nation in the future. The wins in the field of sanitation thus far need to be fully capitalised. By offering valuable insights and frameworks, the report aims to transform how philanthropy is practiced among the top 1%. Key insights from the report reveal a notable shift in philanthropic practices, moving from traditional charity to strategic giving, with many philanthropists now adopting a systems-change approach. An impressive 90% of UHNIs are keen to deepen their advocacy and support to ensure a lasting impact, demonstrating a strong commitment to strategic philanthropy. Good to see red flag raised by Moody’s Report on Water Crisis of India and its impact on Indian economy Will be good if industry and business sees the water crisis as a long term challenge, needing larger public spending for rural and urban water conservation initiatives, and more decentralised urban water supply and waste water re use. Not as an opportunity for itself to sell appliances as solutions. The urban water crisis is a crisis of equity and access to water - for the large number of unplanned and so called illegal and unauthorised peri urban settlements of all cities. The recent CSE report on Delhi sheds light both on the magnitude of the water crisis as well as reimagined ways to address it.

Writing to share a Q&A with #EconomicTimes about climate change, India, and Environmental Defense Fund's priorities in India. In summary, India can and should forge a uniquely Indian pathway to shared, sustainable prosperity. One that is different from how most rich nations have become prosperous - which is the high-emissions led growth model. We believe that India is uniquely positioned, and this pathway is wise for the country and good for the planet. Towards, this, there are 4 areas that we are prioritising because of their strategic relevance to India, and because we have distinctive capabilities: ❇ Given that half of India's population is dependent on the rural economy, adopting a farmer-first approach to climate smart agriculture, livestock and fisheries. Sustainable livelihoods come from the triple win of increased incomes, secured yields and reduced environmental impact. ❇ To address some of the gaps in financing, accountability and incentives, carbon pricing instruments like carbon markets have an important role. A well-designed and well-functioning compliance carbon market for India, and high-quality, high-equity, high-transparency voluntary carbon credits can bridge some of these gaps. ❇ Indian business stand to realise significant shareholder value creation opportunity through responsible business - for which they need to drive authentic, ambitious and concerted action. ❇ The climate tech ecosystem in India needs to be catalysed so that India has both the solutions to industrialise without carbonising, and to ensure strategic security for the economy. These combined with accelerated renewables adoption, circularity, forest cover, biodiversity and water management will be essential for India to be realise the audacious ambition of becoming the first major economy to industrialise without carbonising.
