Myth 2: My college will help me get selected in GSoC ? ➡ Unfortunately, no. Your college's reputation or support doesn't directly influence your selection. It's your individual effort that counts. Myth 3: I don't have enough knowledge to apply for GSoC ? ➡ The truth is, you’ll never feel like you know enough. Learning is an ongoing process, and even experienced developers continue to learn. If you can read and understand the project code, you're already on the right path. Myth 4: I need to understand the entire codebase to contribute ? ➡ It's unrealistic to understand the entire codebase immediately. Focus on specific modules, contribute to them, and gradually expand your understanding. FAQs 1. Does the organization want me to work with them? ➡ Absolutely! Organizations apply to be part of GSoC to get enthusiastic contributors. They are keen on mentoring and collaborating with student developers. 2. Will I be able to complete the task assigned to me during GSoC? ➡ Believe in yourself. There are mentors available to guide you, so don’t hesitate to seek help when needed. 3. I have exams in the summer; how can I contribute? ➡ Manage your time effectively, like many others do. Prioritize and balance your commitments. 4. Any suggestions on what to do before the organization lists come out? ➡ Research and shortlist 2-3 organizations from previous years. Start exploring their projects and interacting with their community. This head start can be beneficial. 5. How should I interact with mentors/organizations? Begin by building the project and reporting bugs. Seek mentor reviews and guidance when needed. Engage constructively and show your enthusiasm. 6. How should I approach reading a large codebase? Break it down into modules. Recently I have gone through Hyperparamter tuning ability on GCP. I have explored two flavours of HPT namely Vertex HPT and Ray HPT. Though both are quite usefull , I have noticed some difference between them. Vertex HPT is managed HPT services from google cloud. It is quite powerfull to run 100s of concurrent threads. It is easy to use and integrates seamlessly with other GCP services. On the downside, its support for search space algorithm are limited. Ray HPT is built on top of Ray Framework. It is quite flexible and provides more control to implementor. On bright side, it supports wide range of search algorithms. Also, it is not limited to google cloud but can be implemneted on kubernetes clusters also. so, when to use what, Go for RAY HPT when you need more control(if not on cloud, comfortable in setting and managing your own cluster) while Vertex HPT will be saviour if you want quick and easy solution(minimum infra management).   #MachineLearning #GCP #VertexAi #DataScience #Data #HPT #rayhpt #ray

Leetcode problem of the day : Count Number of Teams The problem that we are tackling for today is that counting the number of valid teams that can be formed from a sequence of ratings. A team is considered valid if it consists of three soldiers with their ratings in either strictly increasing or strictly decreasing order Approach used: 1. Initialization: - Create two arrays, L and R, to count the elements on the left and right sides of the current element. - Initialize a counter cnt to keep track of the number of valid teams. 2. Iteration: - For each element, count the number of elements smaller and larger on the left and right sides. - Use these counts to calculate the number of valid teams. 3. Counting: - For each element i, count the elements on the left (L) and right (R). - Calculate the number of valid teams by combining the counts from L and R. My first rejection - Google 💔 A lot happened in past two months , people often see the good side on LinkedIn but you never know what is someone going through in real life... I was fortunate enough to get an opportunity to interview for SWE Intern 2025 role at Google ... I was able to solve all problems in both technical rounds but ya some unfortunate events happened and some things didn't went well as I wanted... I was totally prepared. Gave mock interviews, left no topic untouched but yep life has its own plans .. I don't want to demotivate anyone reading this post... Google interviews are not hard .If you've been practicing DSA for so long there is high chance you'll be able to solve the problems during the interview... I'll share my learnings and detailed interview experience in coming posts .. I don't have any regrets as such coz I gave my best and I believe something good is bound to happen in future for sure... A lot of folks ask me how to start CP/DSA, and the most common questions are: -> Which are the best resources? -> Java or C++? (This one is really popular!) -> Which coding platform is better, Codeforces or Leetcode? -> Which Bhaiya/Didi course should I buy? -> How can I avoid struggling while solving problems? While these may seem like genuine beginner doubts, can you see what's common among all these questions? The person asking is trying to avoid the struggle—whether it's about not being able to solve a question, choosing the wrong platform, or selecting the "right" language to start with. We expect ourselves to not struggle when starting something new, hoping for the journey to be smooth, easy, and fast. We often think we can save time by planning the entire roadmap, but that’s not how things work. It’s like walking with a lantern—only after taking the first few steps will the next steps become visible. I’m not demeaning the idea of taking help or guidance. In my personal experience over the last six years, working as SDE in a startup, at an established company, and a sillicon valley giant, and then running my startup, I found that engineers who are extremely good at writing optimized code and solving DSA problems are better at implementing the real stuff too and are overall better SW Engineers. This is compared to those who are just good at specific stacks like React / MERN or Django, or those who use jargon and draw diagrams in system design interviews. There is a reason why big tech companies in Silicon Valley still ask about DSA even for senior positions.

So last year, in August, Zomato, for the first time, began charging a platform fee of Rs. 2 per order. Then, just in the new year, they again raised their charge to Rs. 4 per order in key markets around to make more profit out of that. Then, in April, it increased the fee by 25% to Rs.5 per order. Last month, the fee went up again to Rs. per order. So, Zomato has raised its platform fee three times this year, going from Rs. 2 per order to Rs. 6. Even with these changes, the number of Zomato's monthly customers has stayed about the same. For example, the average number of monthly customers was 17.5 million in Q1 FY24, 18.4 million in Q2, 18.8 million in Q3, 19 million in Q4, and 20.3 million in Q1 FY25. In the 2023–24 financial year, the platform fee was one of the top three things that helped increase Zomato's revenue. The other two were money made from operations and customer delivery charges. Day 2 of 21 days GeeksforGeeks and Deutsche Bank POTD Challenge. Here is the solution for finding the minimum cost of connecting ropes using a priority queue (min-heap). The idea is to always connect the two smallest ropes first, minimizing the total cost. It was fun optimizing the process by leveraging heaps to maintain efficiency at each step. Leetcode Problem Of The Day : Count Number of Teams Approach: 1. Initialization: Start by checking if the length of the rating array is less than 3. If so, return 0 because a team requires at least three members. 2. Iterate through each soldier's rating: For each soldier, count how many soldiers to their left have a higher or lower rating. Similarly, count how many soldiers to their right have a higher or lower rating. 3. Count valid teams: For each soldier, calculate the number of valid increasing and decreasing teams they can form by using the counts from the previous step. Add these counts to the final answer. As a software engineer, your career aim should not just be limited to working at MAANG companies. That’s a huge mistake to attach your worth to the company you work at. There are a ton of other companies out there with: - a great pay scale - a great work culture - a great work-life balance - a great career growth curve When I switched jobs 3 years ago after exiting from my startup. I was looking for a place where I could have: - flexible work hours - good impact on my work - ample growth & exploration opportunities And I’ve found all of those in my role at Microsoft. If you dream of working at a MAANG company, it should be about more than just status. Make a list of what you want from your workplace and what will help you grow. If that aligns with MAANG, go ahead. If not, keep looking. Let’s normalize and admit that Big Tech is more than MAANG. These are all solid companies, but they are part of the ocean of companies out there.

Few people join as a SDE-1 and within a span of ~7 years, they promote to a very senior level(L6 equivalent to Staff Role) in a company whereas same achievement is hard to realize when you're switching companies. So, what makes these employees so special? A few points: - They joined these companies as SDE-1 - Implemented projects end to end - very pro-active in all things: reviews/discussions/coding. - highly biased for taking actions (critical skillset for growth) - were lucky enough to some extent in getting good projects - were hard working enough to find optimizations & propose as new projects in the product - filled with lots of motivation & drive: showing true ownership at the deepest level one could possibly imagine Staying in a company helps you build context over the years, which the lateral hires within few months might or might not be able to grasp. This post is just a reminder: Switching would probably make money but staying in a company with a little bit of luck can do wonders(both money & role). PS: I did 2 switches in my career and I can relate with this post.
