Remember that iconic line from 3 Idiots? Turns out, it applies to the world of corporate sales too! Here’s how I see the sales funnel and the role of sales agents through the lens of this brilliant Bollywood masterpiece: 1️⃣ The Funnel is Like Rancho’s Approach to Life: 🧬 Yaar, Rancho believed in focusing on the process rather than obsessing over results. In sales, the funnel is our process. From prospecting to closing, each stage demands focus, creativity, and patience. When we genuinely nurture leads, solve customer pain points, and add value, the results (revenue) naturally follow. 2️⃣ Sales Agents = The Trio of Rancho, Raju, and Farhan:🙈 🙉 🙊 Rancho (The Visionary): Thinks outside the box, understands the client deeply, and offers tailored solutions. Raju: The cautious one, balancing risk and reward. This is the agent who meticulously analyzes the pipeline, follows up with discipline, and ensures no lead slips through the cracks. ( Maa ki Saadi, Kammo ki shaadi and Job 🙄 ) Farhan: The storyteller who follows his passion. In sales, storytelling is king. The best agents bring products to life, connecting with clients on an emotional level while keeping the pitch authentic. (Abbu Nahi maanenge 🫣 Story) A great sales team combines the strengths of all three. 3️⃣ Obstacles Are Like Virus: 👨‍🦳 Every sales funnel has its challenges: unresponsive leads, budget constraints, or unexpected competition. These obstacles can feel like Virus, the rigid principal. But just like Rancho’s persistence, innovation, and optimism ultimately win the day, so can our creative strategies and resilience in overcoming sales hurdles. I would like you to watch the video before you read my post. People who do not understand Hindi should read the subtitles on the video. Let me now explain why this bothers me. The young lad in the video criticises OOH advertising, labelling it data-deficient and expensive. He challenged the status quo in what seemed like a smart move, claiming that ₹3,000 could fetch a reach of 110,000–120,000 (insinuating that it is a smarter choice than opting for OOH since it delivers data). However, that’s where the data story ended. He swiftly transitioned from quantitative to speculative claims, citing anecdotal evidence—𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐚 𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐬, 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬, 𝐨𝐫 𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐞𝐬. Ironically, the results he put up showed he had targeted everyone—M&F aged 18-65. Essentially, he did what OOH also does, and by that measure, OOH would have reached 10X as many. Claiming that OOH is a waste of money because it lacks 'visible data' reflects a shallow understanding of advertising and marketing that's undermining the industry. 𝐒𝐮𝐜𝐡 𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰𝐩𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐭 𝐢𝐬𝐧'𝐭 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞; 𝐢𝐭'𝐬 𝐝𝐞𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐲'𝐬 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐭𝐡 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧. The real issue isn’t whether OOH generates data—it’s about understanding how to measure its effectiveness and recognizing what OOH is intended to achieve.𝐋𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐨𝐟 𝐢𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐞, 𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐚 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝𝐧’𝐭 𝐛𝐞 𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐧 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐚 𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐨𝐟 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭. 𝐌𝐞𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐞𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬. 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞. If you want to compare the effectiveness of Meta and Google ads, compare them with those of Programmatic, not OOH. They are two different poles. I urge young marketers to delve deeper, read up, and understand the distinctions between advertising, marketing, and media. The perspectives we adopt shape the strategies we champion and, consequently, influence the entire industry.
