Recently, the Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) highlighted significant ad regulation violations in their annual report. Over 100 violations in the cosmetics industry alone point to a crucial issue: balancing creative marketing with ethical responsibility. Key Takeaways for the Cosmetics Industry: 1) Transparency is Key: Ensure all product claims are backed by solid evidence. Misleading claims not only destroy consumer trust but also attract regulatory action. 2) Adhere to Guidelines: Familiarize yourself with ASCI’s guidelines and stay updated on any changes. Mumbai-based beauty ecommerce marketplace Purplle’s revenue inched closer towards the INR 700 Cr mark in the financial year ended March 31, 2024 👇 The Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA)-backed unicorn reported an operating revenue of INR 679.6 Cr in the financial year 2023-24 (FY24), an increase of 43% from INR 475 Cr in the previous fiscal year. The ecommerce marketplace primarily earns revenue through listing of products on its website. It earned INR 392.9 Cr through this in FY24, an increase of 72% from INR 227.9 Cr in the previous year. Creating copies doesn’t make an impactful brand. A report by Crisil and the Authentication Solution Providers Association (ASPA) disclosed that 25-30% of products in India are counterfeit. This makes me question- Is the D2C market surviving on cut copy-paste? New and smaller brands copy products, formulations, and even packaging designs of established brands. Recently, we have experienced the same. FIXDERMA INDIA PVT LTD is present globally and in some countries, companies are making dupes of our products. If you see the pictures below, a random brand has copied our products like Nigrifix and Fixderma Shadow Sunscreen Range well, I’m not surprised to see duplicate brand packaging. Mass-produced fake goods lack quality control, hurting brand reputation and consumer confidence. The worst part is, that while counterfeit luxury items damage brand image, fake medicine or cosmetics pose health risks. Brands are actively combating this issue. Copying other brands' products, names, taglines etc. might seem tempting for a quick win, but it's unethical and unsustainable. → First, it violates intellectual property rights. Brands invest heavily in developing unique products, designs, technologies and marketing strategies. Copying these is essentially a theft of their hard work and innovation. It can also land you in legal trouble. → Second, it erodes brand authenticity and customer trust. Consumers can sense when a brand lacks originality and is simply imitating others. An inauthentic brand fails to forge a genuine emotional connection with its audience. Loyal customers are the bedrock of a sustainable business. → Third, it stifles creativity and growth. Copying means relying on others' ideas instead of tapping into your own well of ingenuity. It's a shortcut that sacrifices the hard work of carving your unique brand voice and identity. Without that differentiator, your brand will struggle to stand out. Instead, take inspiration from diverse sources beyond your immediate competition. Adapt successful principles to your brand's distinct values and customer needs. In my recent interview with The Enterprise World, I had the opportunity to share my perspectives on the booming skincare D2C market and the strategies that have propelled FIXDERMA INDIA PVT LTD to success. One of the key points of discussion was the growing consumer demands in the D2C market. As I explained, standing out in this saturated market is getting incredibly challenging without product differentiation. That is why we leverage our in-house manufacturing to ensure stringent quality control. With shoppers prioritizing clinically proven efficacy, we put science at the forefront. Currently, a lot of skincare or D2C brands in general are leveraging the perks of paid advertising. We do that too since it makes reaching out to a wider audience comparatively easier. However, costly social media advertising makes gaining traction difficult for new entrants. Hence, I won’t recommend any brand to solely rely on paid ads to bring customers. At FixDerma, we focus more on building strong customer relationships through user-generated content campaigns, innovative digital experiences, etc. Ultimately, I believe excellence in three areas is crucial: cost reduction, nurturing customer connections, and delivering unique value. The war of brands is fought in the consumer’s mind Last night, when I was at the Reliance Smart Superstore in Urbana, Gurgaon, these words reverberated in my head when I came across this category header. After I had done the mandatory stock check of our products, I ventured to find out what was new in the market and strolled my way to the Noodles section. While I am not a big consumer of instant noodles, they are one of my favourites because of the sheer number of innovations happening in the space—be it ingredients, flavours, or packaging. Noodles have been hot for some time now. Category headers are merchandise on the shop floor to attract consumers with creative imagery. Generally, they don’t call out a brand but the entire section as such. While this category header definitely did that, it also subtly nudged the consumer towards buying the brand that would’ve collaborated with the retailer in putting this up. This piece of trade marketing for me was one of the more clever pieces I have seen in recent times. Harnessing creativity while working within constraints is the true hallmark of genius execution.
