The Harsh Reality of BGMI Esports in India The Indian BGMI esports scene is facing a crisis. Despite its growing popularity, the industry is plagued by several issues that threaten the livelihoods of professional players and teams. *Less than 10 Active Organizations* Currently, there are fewer than 10 active organizations in India that support BGMI esports. This scarcity of organizations leads to: - Limited opportunities for players to join professional teams - Insufficient resources for teams to compete at the highest level - Increased competition for a limited number of spots *Scams and Unpaid Tournament Prizes* The BGMI esports scene is riddled with scams and unpaid tournament prizes. This includes: - Organizations failing to pay players their dues - Tournament organizers withholding prize money - Fake tournaments scamming players out of their registration fees *Krafton's Restrictions on Paid Scrims* Krafton's restrictions on paid scrims have further exacerbated the situation. This has: - Reduced the number of scrims available for teams to practice - Decreased the revenue streams for teams and players - Forced teams to rely on limited resources for practice *Limited Financial Rewards* Even the largest BGMI events offer limited financial rewards. For example: - The #1 team earns merely ₹75 lakh - This amount is distributed among players, coaches, and organizations, leaving each member with only ₹5-6 lakh - The remaining teams receive significantly less or nothing at all *Ignoring Player Welfare* While hyping BGMI is understandable, ignoring the welfare of players is unacceptable. The current state of BGMI esports is: - Exhausting for players, with limited financial rewards - Demotivating for teams, with scarce resources - Unattractive for new talent, with limited opportunities *A Call to Action* It's essential for stakeholders, including Krafton, organizations, and tournament organizers, to address these issues and prioritize player welfare. Coming from the roots for JHARKHAND, i always wonder why cant we make my city the hub of gaming industry of India? DAY 2 #IGDC2024 The state government of TELANGANA, KERALA, TAMIL NADU and the central govt (additional secretary of the MIB) were present at the DAY 2 of the event. I was mind blown on the work and support by these govt shows in developing and attracting talents for the gaming industry. The people from the govt were present to understand how this gaming industry functions and administrated. Points Discussed: Importance of focused curriculum for game developers and core placement offers. Highlights on the Nationals AVGC-XR policy by the Professor of IIT MADRAS. The Government Degree College for Women in Begumpet, Hyderabad offers a B.Sc. in Gaming program. This creates pathway for women to be a part of this industry. Real introspection about the weakness and shortcomings of the Indian gaming industry was my favorite part of the day. "CHALTA HAI" mindset of the industry, missing hardcore work ethics, CEO fuckups, a need for growth mindset where beautifully discussed by the panel. Since 2019, the Indian esports scene has grown at an incredible pace, with numerous organizations entering the industry to capitalize on its potential. Over time, however, we’ve seen only a handful of these organizations achieve significant success. Now, a trend of consolidation is emerging, where the bigger players are acquiring smaller ones. This brings me to an intriguing thought: by 2030, what if we end up with just 1-2 dominant esports organizations in India? Would this consolidation benefit the industry by creating stability, better resources, and larger opportunities for players and fans? While consolidation might streamline the ecosystem and attract more investments, the lack of competition could lead to monopolistic practices, making it harder for new players to break into the scene.
