It is amazing when you start to think of the number of successful companies that have scaled on the combinatorial power of these stacks - Flipkart to Zomato to Zerodha 📌 Most exciting new DPI - UEI. Think of UEI as the internet of energy. A protocol layer of bits built on atoms of the energy grid. While atoms of energy flow through cables, the bits of transfer, recon and payment continue to be archaic. As energy generation gets more de-centralised (Solar Panels for example), the ledger of energy cannot be a 2-way line anymore. Not to forget the haggling with kabbadiwala for newspapers. This behaviour may have been prompted by constraints but is now the right behaviour ▶ The climate lens cannot be without capitalism - We need to balance all the three 3Ps - People, Profit and Planet. I personally like this so much more than ESG! ESG has become too generic and there is too much focus on G ▶ India cannot decarbonize. We can have a lower carbon footprint growth. Our founders may also be better off trying to solve this problem than a de-carbonisation problem ⏫ Exponential Thinking ▶ The Domino Effect - Mini to Mega - How can you topple a 10 meter tall domino with a 5 Cm starting domino? All you need are 13 dominos which are 1.5x taller than the previous one! Power of compounding - 1.5^13 = ~200x. (10 M is 33 ft!) a. Don’t stop the compounding b. Focus on the alignment that will ensure the kinetic energy is not dissipated c. A 100x outcome is possible with exponential thinking - Not N^2 but 2^N d. Our 'prepared mind' on India bank SaaS, i.e. companies selling SaaS to banks, NBFCs, Insurers, and AMCs. We definitely came out more positive post our work than going in. We’ve historically carried a level of scepticism in the ability of such companies to reach the coveted $100M ARR mark in the venture timeframe i.e. 10 years, primarily on account of the limited universe of large banks or NBFCs in India to sell to, which is unlike US or China. However, in light of some companies in this category (Perfios, M2P, Lentra) reaching meaningful scale, especially post COVID, we decided to refresh our view on the sector. So, here goes our key learnings on key challenges and key attractions. Top challenges include: - Banks’ existing software stack is very sticky and hard to displace - Universe of bank logos to sell to is limited, concentration risk an inevitability - No concept of MVP, need a near-final product at get-go - Long sales and implementation cycles - Need a very specific founder archetype to sell to a bank - High need for customisation and custom-integrations - Multiple products (and PMFs) needed to reach $100M ARR Top attractions include: - Existing stack is old and carries poor NPS - Expanding tech spend in banks, increasing SaaS mix  - High ACVs possible on the back of usage-based billing - High NRR with relative ease of cross-selling new products and to new buyers within bank - Network effects allowing first mover to get to dominant market share - Banks’ openness for multi-stacking can serve as a wedge to land the bank - Ability to command a price premium and high GMs (80%+) More detailed version: https://lnkd.in/gZi4--m5. Much ado about FDI flows redux? In 2015, the Financial Times ran a story of India overtaking China’s FDI flows, and it was exemplified to affirm the success of the "Make in India" theme. Ironically, from such exuberance to the recent exasperation over contracting FDIs, the sentiment has shifted diametrically. Central bank digital currencies (CBDC) come with significant benefits like reduced settlement risks and increased financial inclusion. However, Reserve Bank of India (RBI) deputy governor Michael Debabrata Patra warns that CBDCs could potentially become "safe havens" during crises. This could lead to higher risks for bank deposits, especially uninsured ones, making them more susceptible to withdrawals and even potential bank runs. NAV lending is coming back. Interesting to see Goldman Sachs taking bigger bets on the economy. 💰 Lending against assets (equity, real estate, etc) went out of style for a lot of banks after the pandemic, but the profitability of the segment seems to have enticed a few back into the arena. This type of lending is suggested to make up 1/3 of GS’ FICC lending revenues today, and a lot of the growth as well.

From its roots under a banyan tree to becoming Asia's pioneer stock exchange, Yesterday, we honored the remarkable journey of the Bombay Stock Exchange on its foundation day. Backstory: In the early 19th century, Bombay transformed into a bustling capitalist hub, attracting global traders with its strategic harbor and evolving infrastructure. Amid this economic surge, the Indian stock market took shape, with tradable securities and promise-to-pay notes. Cotton played a pivotal role in Bombay’s rise. By the 1840s, Colaba became the center of this thriving trade, and six Indian brokers laid the groundwork for an organized stock market. One key figure was Seth Premchand Roychand, who began trading cotton under a banyan tree at Elphinstone Circle in 1849. This banyan tree, symbolizing wisdom and unity, became a meeting place for traders. In 1875, twenty-two brokers, including Premchand, formed the Native Share and Stockbrokers Association, evolving into the BSE, Asia's first stock exchange. By 1899, the association moved to Dalal Street, thanks to financial support from Sir Dinshaw Maneckji Petit. The Swadeshi movement and the Tata Iron & Steel Co. IPO in 1907 marked significant milestones, propelling the BSE from its humble beginnings to the iconic PJ Tower. India and China differences run deep, two Asian countries that constitute 40% of the world’s population. They have tried to manage their differences, have cooperated on global issues, and have built a robust economic relationship, but they remain rivals, and in 2020 their troops were involved in a fracas in the Himalayan borderlands. Why are the two stubbornly at odds? Historically, the two countries had respect for one another. Buddhism, which originated from India, was revered by the Chinese. India held Imperial China in high regard. The ongoing territory disputes are over tracts of land in Ladakh/Aksai Chin and in Arunachal Pradesh in India’s northwest and northeast. Also at issue is Tibet. From India’s perspective, a more autonomous Tibet could limit the Chinese troop presence along the border. China sees Tibet as vital for border security with India. Since 1949, both have never been on the same side in international politics. During the Cold War, India aligned with the Soviet Union, whereas China aligned with the Soviet Union and the US. Both were also never aligned with each other against the other two powers. After the Cold War, their alignments drifted to the point where India has much more cooperation with the US and China is closer to post-Soviet Russia. This pattern of partnerships has meant that Delhi and Beijing have no history of strategic collaboration to balance against their negative perceptions of each other and their conflicts in the perimeters. Overall, China's development is years ahead of India. Consequence is that from a position of strength, China does not see why it should offer India any concessions. Realising that it is behind China, India is unwilling to make concessions that could be seen as surrendering. As a result, the two rarely agree on anything. However, India-China ties may see thaw four years after border skirmish froze relations. Ahead of the BRICS summit this month, both reached a significant agreement on de-escalating border tensions. Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar said the deal would allow border patrols to be conducted the way they used to be in 2020, ostensibly before the Galwan Valley clash. Significantly, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping held their first formal bilateral dialogue in five years on the sidelines of Kazan, Russia. Xi acknowledged the responsibilities of both nations to boost the strength and unity of developing countries. China is reigning in "wolf warriors diplomacy" that alienated her from her neighbours and the west, whereas India needs to import from China intermediate products and grant friendlier visa approval to Chinese technical personnel, to help India build manufacturing capacity. The Indian Ocean is the next battleground for primacy and prosperity.
