Suman Gopalan, ex- CHRO of Freshworks, shares a personal take on why the percentage of women's participation in the workforce is very less in India. In 2022: 👩‍💼 Women made up 35% of the startup workforce 👩‍💻 ..but only 19% work in the corporate sector Startups in India could create 2 million new jobs for women by 2030. But it's not about women entering the workforce, it's about keeping them there. According to the Women in India’s Startup Ecosystem Report (WISER), startups are leading the change. 1. More women are in managerial roles in startups than in larger corporates (32% vs 21%) 2. Startups have more women CXOs (18%) than corporates (5%) Women-led startups are game-changers, with 2.5x more women in senior roles than startups with male founders. This shows the impact of representation at the top. There are major challenges like: 10 years into careers, 8/10 men reach director-level or higher positions and only 5/10 women achieve the same. The startup ecosystem has the potential to increase women's participation in the workforce drastically. But it requires bias to action. It is proven time & again that India based GCC’s should be led by a highly experienced India based executive who understands the sensitivities of the locale and the teams . Salesforce India in 2020 is said to have around 2,200 employees. They have been around for years but for some reason or the other , the operations were not taking off! The stark reality of the challenges of remotely managing / micromanaging India GCC came to the fore!! May be the realisation as regards the need of a seasoned India based leader dawned on the board ! True to their size & global CRM leadership, they bring on board Arundhati Bhattacharya (former SBI chairperson) and magic starts to happen ! The number steadily grew to around 9,000 in 2023 and now at 11,000 (still counting…). Other than the employee count , Salesforce India is buzzing with activity & succesful outcomes across their centres ( pan India).
