I see posts from freelance writers complaining about agencies asking for free test articles all the time. I truly feel for them as there are a lot of shady people in all industries nowadays, but as I also deal with freelance writers virtually every single day, I also have something to say on the matter. We have worked with hundreds of freelance writers over the last few years and as we always strive to offer the highest quality content to our clients, we have to ensure they can meet our high standards before we start working with them. The process continues as our Content Editors meticulously fact-check and proofread every piece of content before it is sent to our clients, but let’s focus on the onboarding process here. We ask all writers who apply to send us samples of their iGaming work and their rates, but we also require 1-2 test articles before we make a final decision. We have no way of knowing whether the samples they initially sent were actually written by them and not someone else or an AI tool, so we have to see how they perform in an actual test. This way we can check the quality of content, the flow, how well they incorporated client guidelines, their responsiveness, and most importantly, how they respond to feedback. If they check all of the above, but start getting defensive when constructive criticism goes their way, we don’t want to work with them. We always make it perfectly clear that this is a paid test and ensure the articles never take more than 1 business day to produce. I understand the writers need to make an effort, spend their time and it is not fair they are not compensated for it. What is more, we pay them even if we cannot use the test article, i.e. it does not meet our standards. Just as clients shouldn’t pay for under-par content, I don’t think we should pay for content that is clearly way below the required quality, but we still pay them as I’d rather lose some money (cost of doing business) than listen to the backlash of disgruntled writers who think everybody is out to get them. I realise that with so many layoffs nowadays, there are thousands of writers looking for work and there are some people and companies looking to take advantage of them. That is why it would be smart to ask around about the company advertising the job/gig you are interested in, and LinkedIn is a pretty good platform to perform a background check and ask any writers who used to work with them for their experiences. But, this doesn’t mean that all agencies are bad and that you should reject any test articles/tasks right off the bat. How else do you think they can be sure you are as good as you claim to be? If I had hired every writer who claimed they were an amazing writer, our agency would have gone bust a long time ago.

Not every piece of content will perform “well.” I say "well" because content performance is defined differently by different people: 1. A lot of reactions 2. A lot of comments 3. A lot of impressions 4. A lot of conversions If you define 'well' by any of these, then you must know that content has its highs and lows. Some days it’s great, and other days it slows. Unpopular opinion - Passion won’t get you very far in content writing. A mistake most content writers make is believing that passion is good enough to make them successful. And they dish the buzzword in all their applications. I've been in the content game for seven years now and I can say without a doubt that passion isn't what you need to join the top dogs bandwagon. Don’t get me wrong, it definitely has its place—it’s like that initial rocket boost when you’re just getting started. But that will be the first or second year. That's the point when you're facing lots of rejections, editors are killing you with "harsh" feedbacks, but because you're passionate about writing, you don't throw in the towel. But it get's to a point where you need more than passion to survive. Why? - Every other writer is passionate (some even more than you) - The competition is stiff - Clients demands are increasing That's the point you need to go from a passionate writer to a growth-driven content writer. Read the next paragraph twice or thrice if you have to. Clients wants results, and being passionate about words doesn't give results. Having intellectual knowledge is the key. In short, go beyond words and have the mindset of an entrepreneur. Start asking yourself questions like: - How do I drive revenue for clients? - How do successful content teams work? - What's the impact of each piece I create for clients? - How do I differentiate myself from the crowd? Answering these questions should push you into a season of learning so you can become a better partner for clients. "This #editor must think they're hot s###!" I know you've had this thought many, many times. How dare they correct your #writing? Who made them kings and queens of #content? What a nerve to make such suggestions. And what's with the crude language such as "change to", "add link", "correct typo"? And the red lines everywhere? Pffff! I know what you're thinking. You don't deliver content that has typos - but sometimes, you do. And I spot them miles away, unless they're mine! 😂 Please trust me when I say this: if someone is editing your work, they're out there to help you. Sure, they're helping themselves and their business first. But they are polishing up that content in a way that resonates with a bigger picture you, the #writer, sometimes don't realize. It's never personal. Well, it's RARELY personal. More often than not, the editor doesn't know the writer and may not even interact directly with them. What they have before them is a document that must attend to the company expectations. This week I'm editing someone's work. They know their stuff well, and I value that immensely, but the delivery is slightly off. There are occasions where there is no connection across some concepts, and some technical aspects can be improved. I believe in that person. I want him to succeed. I want US to succeed. The writer may hate me in the end. They're likely to come and visit my LinkedIn profile and think: "Pfff. Who made you king of content? How dare you? Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries!" But I promise: I want him to succeed. His success is our success. So dear writers out there, this one's for you: I know it's not easy to take that feedback. At 9 pm last night, a client emailed me with a simple request: she wanted my help polishing up a personal LI post so that she could publish it this morning. I cracked open my laptop, and within 15 minutes, I sent her a publish-ready LI post that left her very happy. Here's the thing - my clients are CEOs who work evenings and weekends. I choose to work with driven and successful leaders, so I, too, work a non-traditional schedule. If I can accommodate client requests, I make a point of doing so, all the more for significant issues. It is generous and practical—it alleviates client stress and prevents me from kicking a can down the road. In turn, they pay me extraordinarily well, refer me to executives in their circle, and happily commit to retainer agreements. Keeping odd hours comes with the territory if you want to earn excellent pay and work with top leaders. 4,00,000 per month SALARY Expectations for the role of Content Writer!! 😱 That's what I received in response to the answer to the screening questions of our Content Writer Job Post. Now, I don't want to argue if the Content Writer role can give this much money or not. Or if a Content Writer in Jaipur would be paid this much or not? Who knows if a company is actually offering that? BUT, We mentioned our Salary range in the Job Description which is way too low than what was expected. We make our Job Descriptions detailed enough to eliminate the overqualified & underqualified people along with other filters so that we have to look and reject fewer people. Yet, so many unfit people apply for the same. I get it, you have to apply to hundreds of jobs. You don't really read job description as it might be a waste of time if you don't get selected for it. So you apply even if you are not fit to increase your chances. And I do not criticize anyone doing that. But, this is the sole reason that I put very odd screening question (marked in red) In the high HOPE, that it would get their attention. But NO, nothing can get our attention at all!! I even had applicants who came for an interview. They didn't read the job description even then. I asked them to read in front of me. All their facial glow was gone because they found that they didn't have the niche-relevant experience. Applying for jobs blindly doesn't increase your chances of getting a job, what it sure does is increase your dissatisfaction and frustration because of not getting a job after applying at so many places. Don't you think? With that being said, we are hiring for a Content Writer role and I have given all the possible details in the Job Description. If you are looking for a job in the Content Writing field, find the JD in the link in the comments. Only apply if you feel fit after reading JD. Tag someone who you think could be a fit and would take time to read the job description.
