The transaction-based video-on-demand (TVOD) model is gaining traction in India, projected to grow significantly from Rs 500 crore in 2023 to Rs 2000 crore by 2028. TVOD allows users to pay per-view, offering flexibility and control over content consumption without committing to subscriptions, appealing especially to urban audiences with disposable incomes and a preference for premium content. This shift was accelerated during the pandemic, as direct-to-digital releases became popular. TVOD's appeal lies in its immediacy, catering to viewers who want to watch content as soon as it's available, bridging the gap between theatrical releases and SVOD availability. It also thrives on offering exclusive and high-quality content, which traditional television may not provide. The model is supported by widespread smartphone usage, improved internet connectivity, and seamless payment options like UPI, enhancing accessibility across India. Despite initial perceptions of being for affluent consumers, TVOD is expanding beyond tier-I cities, attracting interest in tier-II cities as well. Its coexistence with subscription-based (SVOD) and advertising-based (AVOD) models suggests a diversified future for OTT platforms in India, where content remains central amidst evolving consumer preferences and economic realities post-pandemic.
