The Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) has announced an ambitious plan to operationalise a ₹1,000-crore venture capital fund by the first quarter of the financial year 2026. 【India Stack 🇮🇳: How Digital Public Infrastructure is Empowering Startups and Enhancing Technological and Financial Inclusion】 India’s Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI), popularly known as #IndiaStack, is creating immense value for the startup ecosystem while also addressing India's most pressing challenge #Unemployment. #Aadhaar In 2009, only 17% of Indians had bank accounts, primarily due to costly KYC verifications requiring physical documents. Aadhaar, launched by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), provided a 12-digit unique number, serving as proof of identity and address. With 97% of Indians now covered by Aadhaar, it facilitates online KYC processes (e-KYC), DigiLocker, and other APIs, reducing entry barriers. By making it easier for individuals to open bank accounts and access financial services, Aadhaar is driving financial inclusion and creating new job opportunities in the financial sector. #UPI Launched by the National Payments Corporation Of India (NPCI) in 2016, UPI offers real-time, instant payments through QR codes and unique UPI identities, reducing the risks associated with credit cards. It has grown rapidly, processing transactions worth $240 billion in June 2024. By lowering the costs and barriers associated with financial transactions, UPI is not only enhancing consumer convenience but also creating numerous jobs in the digital payments and associated sectors. #DigiLocker #AccountAggregator: DigiLocker, part of the Data Empowerment and Protection Architecture (DEPA), provides a digital document wallet, enabling users to access and share authorized digital documents. With 303 million users and 6.75 billion issued documents, DigiLocker simplifies document verification processes for startups. This innovation significantly reduces administrative burdens, freeing up resources for job creation and enabling businesses to scale faster. Account Aggregators (AAs) act as consent managers, facilitating secure and transparent data flow between Financial Information Users (FIUs) and Providers (FIPs). By linking financial accounts, AAs streamline credit applications and reduce fraud. Startups like Snapmint benefit from AAs, lowering loan processing costs and fraud rates. This efficiency allows financial institutions to expand their operations and workforce, thereby creating more employment opportunities. #ONDC The Open Network For Digital Commerce (ONDC) is the latest layer, transcending the three traditional layers. Launched in 2021, ONDC democratizes e-commerce, enabling small businesses to sell online without needing extensive logistical and technological capabilities. ONDC’s unbundling of the digital commerce ecosystem fosters competition and innovation, providing consumers with more choices and lower prices. What happens when a Founder leaves after raising funds or for some reason can't continue? What Happens to Investor Money in that case? This is a genuine concern, and the answer lies in a term you might find in your term sheet - Reverse Vesting. Reverse vesting happens when founders already own their shares from day one but agree that the company can buy back these shares at a nominal price if they leave early. Typically this reverse vesting is of four-year period with a One-year Cliff. So if any founder leaves before one year(cliff), he has to sell all his shares to the company at nominal prices. This is generally a good practice to prevent startups from failing because of cofounder issues or early founder exits. Share your thoughts, and ask doubts about anything related to startups

Better late than never when it comes to posting. Recently participated in an engaging panel on Risk, Return and Impact: The Tripod of Impact Investing at Impact Investors Council (IIC)’s flagship event #Prabhav2024. Was a good opportunity to articulate a few points as an impact investor for close to 20 years: ✅As investors, we need to evolve our thinking of the end customer segment. They have evolved from what we used to call bottom of the pyramid to be Entrepreneurial Households – aspirational, resilient and with multiple sources of income, which create a massive trillion dollar transactional volume on just core solutions and services. ✅The search for aligned capital remains a key challenge - despite clear evidence that there are real, risk-adjusted returns to be made. The impact investing sector needs to value its own work, and reflect that work in valuations - which in turn will convince other pools of capital that returns can be made. ✅Building companies for this customer segment requires a unique DNA and approach - where technology, data, and branding are approached differently. We need to set up transformational platforms to build blue chip companies that serve this segment effectively.
