Director, IBM Research India | CTO IBM India and South Asia

Proud moment for me and all of us in IBM Research India to see the tireless efforts, keen intellect and enduring passion of our dear colleague L Venkata Subramaniam recognized in this Mint article. Tremendous respect for Ajai Chowdhry Abhay Karandikar and Rajamani Vijayraghavan and the leadership they are exercising for the quantum ambitions of our country, and indeed for many more unnamed musketeers (many of whom are introduced very caringly in Venkat's book Quantum Nation: India's Leap into the Future). Secretary, Department of Science & Technology. On Lien from Professor, Department of EE, IIT Bombay. Former Director, IIT Kanpur.

A significant day in National Quantum Mission (NQM) and National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber Physical Systems (NM-ICPS)!! As part of the 100 days program of Hon'ble PM Shri Narendra Modi ji's new Government, the India DST celebrated a milestone moment with the announcement of two landmark steps of the flagship Missions NQM & NM-ICPS today. Hon'ble Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh joined us online with his congratulatory message and address. One of the announcements is the establishment of four state-of-the-art Thematic Hubs (T-Hubs) and several technical groups in premier institutions and research labs of the country for spearheading quantum technology advancements, particularly in the key verticals Quantum Computing, Quantum Communication, Quantum Sensing & Metrology, and Quantum Materials & Devices. The four T-Hubs are being established in Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore; Indian Institute of Technology, Madras along with Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT) New Delhi ; Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay and Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi for the verticals respectively and comprises of 14 Technical Groups. Selected through a highly competitive process they will specialize in key quantum verticals, ensuring a comprehensive and robust development in the four verticals. The network of T-Hubs and technical groups have been announced under the National Quantum Mission #NQM approved by the Union Cabinet, led by the Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji, to position India as a global leader in quantum technologies, and revolutionize sectors such as communication, healthcare, finance, space, & energy. Another major initiative BharatGen, a Multimodal Large Language Model Initiative was also launched to create generative AI solutions for Indian languages. This initiative under the Technology Innovation Hubs set up by National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems (NM-ICPS), launched by the PM in 2018, will focus on India-centric AI, aligned with #AatmanirbharBharat. The initiative which can further leverage India's AI mission can make AI accessible to all citizens. Prof. A.K. Sood, Principal Scientific Adviser to GoI; Dr. Neeraj Mittal, Secretary, Department of Telecommunications ( DOT ), Government of India; Dr. Samir V Kamat, Secretary, DDR&D and Chairman, DRDO India; Dr. Ajai Chowdhry, Chairman, MGB, #NQM; Dr. Kris Gopalakrishnan (online), Chairman, MGB, #NMICPS; Dr. Ekta Kapoor, Head, FFT Division, DST; Dr. J B V Reddy, Mission Director, NQM and other dignitaries attended the event. Venkat's "Quantum Nation" brilliantly explores the immense potential and challenges of quantum technology, emphasizing the pivotal role of India's National Quantum Mission in establishing global leadership. By reflecting on India's 60-year journey in classical computing, the book distills valuable lessons for the quantum era, while candidly addressing the hurdles and mixed outcomes in the Indian hardware and semiconductor industries. It offers a comprehensive view of the quantum computing stack, quantum hardware, and the game-changing applications across various sectors. Venkat also delves into India's emerging quantum startup ecosystem, shedding light on the struggles faced by founders and the crucial need to transform skills into economic growth. Through successful examples of ecosystem-building, "Quantum Nation" envisions a future where India stands at the forefront of quantum innovation, driving significant national development. This book is a must read for anyone interested in quantum computing and India's journey in this transformative field. L Venkata Subramaniam #QuantumComputing #India #QuantumNation

This is some great news coming from Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) and Prof Rajamani Vijayaraghavan's lab. Waiting with eager anticipation. Flashback to 64 years ago, we came to know from the book Quantum Nation that TIFR had built India's first Classical Computer the TIFRAC (Tata Institute of Fundamental Research Automatic Calculator) in 1960. TIFRAC included 2,700 vacuum tubes, 1,700 germanium diodes and 12,500 resistors. It had 2,048 40-bit words of ferrite core memory. Again 64 years later TIFR has taken the lead. Eagerly looking forward to knowing what the TIFR Quantum Computer will be called? Any suggestions on the names? https://lnkd.in/gkmrdHth
