Reimagining Development and Welfare through Local Ideas, Strategies, and Management practices

About us

Localism, as a theory of change, posits that the expertise does not only reside in the think tanks but also among those who have local knowledge, those with a feel for how things work in a specific place and an awareness of who gets stuff done. Here, success is measured not just by how big you can scale, but by how deeply you can connect. Localism stands for the idea that there is no one set of solutions to diverse problems. Instead, it operates through a dynamic process with tight feedback loops that allow building your own solution to your problem that fits your local context. It believes that people are happiest when their lives are enmeshed in caring face-to-face relationships, building their communities together. While engaging with Development and Public Policy problems, we rely on various heuristics such as; PDIA (Problem Driven Iterative Adaptation) approach, DDD method (Doing Development Differently) and the tools of Nudging.

A very thought-provoking article by Arun Maira, an economist and former member of the planning commission of India. The challenge for governance in the 21st century lies in a misalignment of the institutions of Bazaar (market), Sarkar (government) and Samaj (society). Societal, environmental and economic problems have become complex because they must be solved simultaneously. To solve these complex problems, the government needs policymakers and implementers who are not intimidated by complexities, but who understand and embrace it, and produce multidisciplinary solutions. #governance #publicpolicy #goverment #society #culture #market

"This task demands new approaches to what responsibility means in research. To create futures in which people can thrive, responsible research must go beyond compliance to formal rules of ethics and integrity. It must ask much bigger questions about the place of research within local communities and much larger geopolitical environments. And it must reconsider how we partner well with the governments, industries and the communities with which we are embedded. This takes us right back to the question of why we do research. Is it to publish more papers, or find a drug that makes a lot of money? Or are we here to make the world a better place?" https://lnkd.in/dJDPSxXu #research #practices #indigenousknowledge #decolonization #extractiveresearch

  • Localism supported the 'Aapki Yojana, Aapki Sarkar- Aapke Dwar' initiative in nine panchayats of Daru Block as an authorized VLE. A total of 254 members submitted applications for different services from 9 Panchayats. Out of these applications, 110 were approved from field location and submitted for next steps. Ms. Nancy Sahaay, the Honourable DC of Hazaribagh, visited one of our intervention locations, Digawar Panchayat, and appreciated the efforts of VLEs. • The triumph of Localism's initiative is deeply rooted in the strong partnerships we’ve forged at the Panchayat, block, and district levels. By nurturing these critical connections within the system, we've been able to catalyze meaningful change on a broader scale. The Localism team is profoundly grateful for the steadfast support and recognition from the communities, their leaders at the village and Panchayat levels, and the dedicated officials across the Panchayat, block, and district levels. I recently had the privilege of spending three days engaging with first-year BTech students at IIT Gandhinagar during their foundation program. Our discussions centered on Artificial Intelligence, culture, and digital humanities. To break the ice, I used a reference from Game of Thrones—the myth of Valyrian steel—which seemed to have resonated with the students instantly and set the tone for a lively and insightful exchange. I was thoroughly impressed by their curiosity and eagerness to explore the intersections of technology and culture. Following this enriching experience, I had the opportunity to interact with young thinkers from Gujarat at a forum organized by the Gujarat Young Thinker's Forum at Auro University. While my topic was about India's economic practices in pre-colonial India, the enthusiastic response by students extended the discussions to sacred /ritual economy. These interactions were not just professionally fulfilling but also personally enriching. Engaging with such bright and inquisitive minds allowed me to learn as much from them as I hope they did from me.

To cultivate an education that truly inspires us to become better individuals, we must reintegrate the human element lost in the depths of hyper-intellectualism. It is only by descending from the lofty perches of our ivory towers that we can genuinely grasp the issues we seek to resolve.
