MIT's Carbon Capture Technology Overview Carbon capture technology is crucial for mitigating climate change by reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Recent advancements by MIT scientists have led to a more efficient and cost-effective method of capturing CO2 from both the air and oceans. Key Concepts 1. Carbon Capture from Air Traditional carbon capture methods have been expensive and energy-intensive. MIT's new approach utilizes an electrochemical cell to capture CO2 directly from the air, making the process more efficient and cost-effective. 2. Mechanism of the New Technology The device consists of two electrodes with a liquid electrolyte. The electrodes are coated with a special polymer that selectively binds to CO2 molecules. When exposed to air, CO2 molecules are attracted to the electrodes and bind to the polymer layer, allowing for a reversible process where CO2 can be released when needed. 3. Carbon Capture from Oceans The oceans absorb 30-40% of atmospheric CO2, making them a significant carbon sink. Current methods for desalinizing seawater involve complex processes that are costly. MIT's new method simplifies this by using a membrane-less electrochemical cell. 4. Process Steps 💅 Acidification: Seawater is initially acidified to convert bicarbonates into CO2. 💅Collection: The CO2 is collected as a gas when pressure is applied. 💅Neutralization: The water is then treated to reclaim protons and neutralize acidity before being returned to the ocean. 5. Waste Disposal 💅Captured CO2 can be chemically transformed into useful substances like ethanol or buried in deep geological formations. 💅Some CO2 may be used as feedstock in chemical manufacturing, though it’s impractical to utilize all captured CO2. 6. Potential Applications This technology could be applied in various sectors, including: 💅Power plants 💅Industrial processes 💅Transportation It could also help improve air quality in urban areas by capturing CO2 emissions 7. Environmental Benefits 🏐Reducing atmospheric CO2 levels can help mitigate ocean acidification, which is harmful to marine life. 🏐The technology has the potential to protect marine ecosystems by lowering CO2 concentrations in the ocean. After a quick 5-minute training session, users can control the prosthetic arm with their thoughts, just like a natural limb. The arm has full human motion and even provides haptic feedback for grip strength. For a person with disability, learning to control a part of my body that they don't have is surreal and empowering.
