In this episode on Liberalism in India, Gurcharan Das talks about Liberalism and Hinduism. Mr Gurcharan Das describes the unique features of Hinduism as a polytheistic practice and the effect this has had on the liberal values practiced by Indians. He also narrates the importance of these liberal values and how they became distant with the advent of atheism and modernism in India. In the video, Mr Das brings out the view taken on religion by Mahatma Gandhi and aligns it with the principles of Dharmashastra. He comments on the universal applicability of liberal values, something that is also enshrined in the Indian constitution. This, he believes, makes it important for political leadership to “sell the constitution to Indians”. Something yet to be fulfilled in India today. Political Economy of Development offers a structured learning path to help you see beyond the surface and identify the root problems of issues like corruption, unemployment, and minimum support prices.
