The Israeli high-tech sector is strong and will emerge even stronger after the crisis. Institutional investors in Israel must, however, invest more to help the industry. Over the past decade, the high-tech market has proven to be highly profitable, evidenced by numerous mergers and acquisitions. High-tech must be a significant component of investment portfolios. Our role is to revitalize the market. Without the support of institutional investors, it will be challenging to attract foreign investors. Yesterday, I was privileged to speak on the Alternative Investments panel moderated by Roee Bergman from Calcalist כלכליסט at the Future Investments 2024 conference by Calcalist and Migdal Group. Today, I came across a concerning trend that made me reflect on the state of our tech ecosystem. Despite the hype and excitement surrounding Israeli startups in recent years, the number of new technological entrepreneurship ventures has been on a steady decline. This downward trajectory persisted even during the explosive growth of 2020 and 2021. It's disheartening to witness the decrease in new early-stage tech companies sprouting into our ecosystem. The challenges we face seem to go beyond temporary economic crises or societal issues. The root causes may lie in how our government and investor communities are approaching sector strategies and regulations. As a part of the Israeli startup nation, it's crucial for us to address these underlying issues to ensure the continued growth and success of our tech industry. Keeping this trend going is not an option for our ecosystem, and it is maybe one of the most important challenges we need to think about in the near future. Great accomplishment to our cyber ecosystem, Eleven Israeli startups are featured in the Rising in Cyber list, which highlights the most promising cyber companies in the U.S. https://risingincyber.com/ The project was organized by the global venture capital fund Notable Capital, in cooperation with the NewYork Stock Exchange, Fenwick, and HSBC Innovation Banking. The list includes: Gomboc.ai , Oligo Security , and Wing Security among the 10 early-stage companies; Astrix Security, Descope , and Grip Security at the mid-stage; and Cyera , Drata , Island , Orca Security , and Wiz at the growth stage. The Rising in Cyber survey of more than 100 security leaders revealed three innovation drivers needed by security teams to adapt to a growing footprint of technologies, the rise of AI, and the evolving sophistication of cyber criminals. These themes provide a glimpse into the future buying patterns of CISOs. 1. Identity and Access Management The rise of non-human actors and identity-centric, malware-free attacks, which accounted for 75% of incidents in 2023, highlights the urgent need for robust identity and access management (IAM) solutions. Startups are stepping up with next-generation Identity Governance and Administration (IGA), new authentication platforms, and privileged access management tools. 2. Cloud Security With the transition to multi-cloud architectures, traditional security tools remain inadequate for cloud environments. Innovations in cloud detection and response, data security, automation, risk management, and AI threat detection are becoming essential. 3. Application and Code Security The widespread use of open-source code introduces new vulnerabilities, while AI supercharges product security teams. Startups enabling collaboration between developers and security teams are leading the way, with AI improving code remediation and testing.

Over the past decade, I have reviewed over 1,000 cv's in search for the best team members to join our team. I see a lot of people in Israel in need of jobs these days so sharing some tips from my experience as a manager and Organizational Psychologist that I hope can be helpful. If you have any questions or additional insights, please feel free to comment below or pm me. I divided the job-seeking journey into 4 stages: 1. Self-reflection 2. CV building 3. Networking 4. “Dating” your future boss In this post I will cover some pointers for the first 3 stages. Next post will cover pointers for the last stage. *Self-reflection* 1. Self-reflection and understanding what you are good at and what you are passionate about. 2. Who are you - Need to be able to answer this in 2-3 lines at the top of the CV. Are you a manager and looking to be in a leadership role or more of a hands-on executive? Is your focus marketing/sales/coding/project management? Pro tip: Ask your friends to be honest with you and share the value they see you bring. It will crystalize your own view as well. *CV and LinkedIn profile* 1. CV building - how does your future boss know you are great at what you do? What success and impact did you have that you can articulate with numbers? 2. The design is great. But the most important is the content. Make sure clear description in the header what you do and keep it short, with bullet points and a 1-pager. Make sure no mistakes. If there is even 1 typo, it is a no-go. 3. Passion talks. Years ago I hired a young man with very little experience because he came with great passion and told me how he taught himself code at age 11. See how you can find that story that highlights your greatness. *Networking* 1. Networking and asking friends for an intro or to put in a good word. Identify 10 people you will have coffee with to brainstorm your career. Some will give you great advice. Others will give you a good lead. 2. Don't only think about networking with those who can give you the job today but rather with those who know people that can help you. 3. The best way to build trust is to show your work in action. I once hired someone because he reached out and explained to me in a loom video why one of my client websites stinked and how that can be fixed. He didn't tell me what he does but showed me. What tips have you found as a manager that you would give future employees?

From our perspective at Joule Ventures, it is never a bad time to be investing in #Israel, so long as one remains highly disciplined from a valuation, sector, and stage standpoint. Is the Israeli business community truly ready for high-achieving Haredi professionals to take leadership roles in the tech ecosystem? We are, as Safra-Tech’s mission is to integrate Haredi professionals into the tech ecosystem, with a focus on #entrepreneurship and #startups We're not merely asking how we can slot Haredi workers into low-level roles… we're asking a far more ambitious question: How can we make Haredi society a key stakeholder in the tech ecosystem? It’s not about individual Haredi employees entering the tech world… it’s about a shift in Israeli society’s perspective, becoming key influencers and decision-makers, and having the ability to progress, to secure better jobs, and to make a real impact This is a wake-up call, not just for Haredi society, but also for the wider Israeli business community. As an example, the current #VC scene (which drives tech) in Israel is centralized, steeped in a Tel Aviv culture that brings with it its own mindset and politics To effect real change, we need to alter the landscape itself Aside from giving it lip service, does Israeli society truly want integration? Is the business sector ready for Haredi professionals to become C-level executives, managers, and policy influencers? If the answer is no, then we need to ask ourselves why… Why are we content with Haredi employees occupying low-level roles, but not decision-making positions? To catalyze progress, we need outside investors who understand the need for change, who are willing to provide the financial backing necessary to make this vision a reality. This cannot be left to the same players who have dominated the scene so far. Cyabra-SPAC Merger: A Game-Changer in Digital Security Cyabra, a startup from Tel Aviv, is merging with a Special Purpose Acquisition Company (SPAC) and listing on NASDAQ. This merger values Cyabra at $70 million. Founded in 2018, Cyabra has garnered support from notable investors such as Peter Thiel’s Founders Fund and OurCrowd, which facilitated a $5.6 million fundraising round. The startup is recognized for its expertise in identifying and mitigating the spread of misinformation by fake social media accounts, a critical function during election periods. Over the past year, Cyabra has collaborated with 19 governments to protect their electoral processes. In addition to assisting governments, Cyabra serves major corporations, including Warner Media. Warner Media utilized Cyabra's technology to identify fake profiles discussing "Wonder Woman 1984," thereby safeguarding its brand. Elon Musk also employed Cyabra's technology to evaluate bot activity before acquiring Twitter. Central to Cyabra's success are its advanced algorithms and data analytics, developed by experts from Israeli special operations. CEO Dan Brahmy emphasizes that their technology is vital in detecting misinformation attacks, enabling their clients to counteract them effectively. Furthermore, former CIA Director Mike Pompeo recently joined Cyabra's board, endorsing the startup’s mission to combat disinformation. He regards Cyabra as a "crucial partner" in protecting democracy and national security. While I'm glad to see the The Wall Street Journal publish this, is it really new news? Israeli entrepreneurs have been leading the cybersecurity market for years. 8200 is a big reason for that, but it is also the broader ecosystem that has been built up around it. Experienced entrepreneurs, VCs that understand the market (like Merlin Ventures!) and buyers that have come to expect world-class capabilities from Israeli startups. It's a big part of why we built the Israeli Startup Advisory Network (ISAN) with our partner Josh Cohen - to help further foster connectivity between US security executives and the innovation coming from the Israeli startup community. Israel has delivered so many amazing companies already, and yet we continue to see new innovations coming out every day. The cyber expertise from 8200 is only the beginning. IVC Data and Insights is proud to be the primary data provider for the Israel Innovation Authority Annual Report 2024 and the Tel Aviv Tech Ecosystem Report 2023 by the Tel Aviv Yafo Municipality. In both reports, the IVC's data supports a comprehensive analysis of the Israeli tech ecosystem. According to Tel Aviv Tech Ecosystem Report 2023, Tel Aviv is home to nearly 3000 tech companies and the first worldwide for startup conversion. A big thank you to Kerry Leigh Miller and IDA Ventures for inviting me to participate in a panel discussion on Israeli tech during SF TECH WEEK by a16z We discussed the venture landscape in Israel, and covered a lot, so I wanted to share some key takeaways… One of the main topics we discussed was the unique attributes of Israeli founders. Their resilience, coupled with world-class technical expertise and a commercially-minded approach, makes investing in Israeli #entrepreneurs compelling for many #investors We also discussed the importance of team-building during the startup journey. Israeli founders, with their often strong and charismatic personalities and deep understanding of their markets, excel at this. They can translate complex technical innovations into practical, market-ready solutions Our conversation also highlighted the impact of Israeli universities on tech, as a recent study showed that Tel Aviv University ranks second on the universities’ unicorn founder list… so lots of incredible potential from this region During times of conflict, the resilience of Israeli entrepreneurs has become even more pronounced, but we also have to acknowledge the country’s current challenges Overall, the panel was a reminder of the strength and potential of the Israeli startup scene, so I'm excited to see what the future holds, even during this challenging time for the country Thank you to my fellow panelists and participants, and all those who attended… looking forward to participating in future panels on the topic of Israeli tech!
